Luke makes his feelings known and ‘needs must’ is the free agent answer

Swansea City head coach, Luke Williams, has given his opinion of what he believes may lay ahead for his Swansea side. His players are ready to take on Norwich City this afternoon at the Swansea.Com (3pm) There is still no little anger over the way the Swans are playing their football currently, but Luke has another explanation.

Talking yesterday afternoon, and a good few hours after we reported that Liam Cullen was receiving some pretty urgent treatment on his ankle, Williams took on a more thoughtful journey when talking about new players. At last he concedes this season is going to be a learning exercise for Swansea City, and IF the new players brought in can gel together, we will have a good season.

That has alarmed a lot of Swans fans, however this is what Luke has said. “Are there going to be some ups and downs this season? I am pretty sure there is. I don’t think at the moment we are in a place where we have got an obvious group to challenge at the very peak of the Championship. I think that would be a silly thing for me to say. But have we got a group that I think can have a really good season ? Yes.

“I think in the short amount of time we have been playing this season, we have shown we can be excellent and we have shown we can probably be overwhelmed at times. I don’t think there’s been a game where we have been poor from start to finish, where you come away and there are no positives”

Seems Luke is either playing down things or that old saying he is ‘managing the fans expectations’

We’ve had a few chats on the Indy forum about free agents already this summer, and there are a plethora of players available. It’s no good guessing who the Swans are interested in, despite that being confirmed there are players they are considering approaching. But no approaches have been made as yet. That much we do know. Williams has stated. "We have spoken about a couple of players that have come up and at the moment we're not one hundred per cent sure if that's the right player for us and whatever," he added. "It's good to know that player's available potentially, but we didn't act on it. We have to get the right player, and not be too panicked into getting the wrong player in. With that said, I think when needs must, you probably throw more caution to the wind, potentially trying to bring a player in on a short-term contract”

The Swans did go down that route with Yannick Bolasie last season who was so helpful with this website when he signed for the Swans. So, it’s not unknown territory. And Luke has hinted that a short term contract could suit. Moving on Luke is open about the conditions ahead. "There are players that will become available in that way and potentially available because we think they're the perfect fit and potentially available because we feel like we're in a place where we need to take a risk on a player”

A number of Swans targets this season are now at other Championship clubs, last nights game between Hull City and Sheffield United threw up Alfie Gilchrist. Chelsea preferred him to go to the Blades, and today Swans fans may see Kaide Gordon. The Swans put a whole load of effort into this young man, he chose Norwich City, however it seems he was another one who listened too much to the clubs kit man.

The first bit of news we have isn’t good for Josh Ginnelly. Last night after Williams opened up on the player we were told that it may not be this year that he returns, more like early 2025. Fingers crossed for Josh.

Later we will have all the latest injury news and teams for this game.
