Number of Welsh-speakers lowest in eight years on 23:16 - Feb 9 by lifelong | Large swathes of, for example, London contain areas where very little English is spoken, Road signs are multi lingual with notices in hospitals,Police Stations, Post Offices etc written in up to half a dozen languages. Over a million people there don’t speak English, I suspect it is a similar situation in areas of Manchester,Birmingham, Leicester and Bradford. Just because 600,000 people speak Welsh in Wales, a language that has been spoken here for many centuries, there is outcry on here. So it costs a few quid to promote the language, it’s worth every penny. |
Well said. The BBC has done a job on the Brit Nats. They just cant see the value in helping their own ancient language have a future after it was nearly beaten to death just a few generations ago. We want good jobs and a healthy welsh language. Its welsh as well as English, not instesd. Many countries thrive with 2 languages. Its not unusual at all. Now ….. what about that Farage bloke wanting to make the NHS insuranced based instead of free…? | ![](/images/avatars/9736.gif) |

Number of Welsh-speakers lowest in eight years on 15:59 - Feb 9 by SullutaCreturned | Does it assume that? What if the 80% think like me, that those who want to use Welsh or learn Welsh are free to do so but that more of the money spent on Welsh promotion could be better used elsewhere? As any teacher can tell you, be it anywhere in the Uk, schools need more money and so does pretty much every public service with some on the verge of collapse and facing big cuts. I will always argue that preserving life and the quality of life is more important than a language. If something isn't strong enough to survive on its own merits then let it die out naturally. Welsh won't die though, it has its strongholds. |
I don’t see it as any different to supporting other parts of Welsh culture - arts, music, environment etc. The NHS example is always an emotive one as nothing is as important as health. If we based taxes on that it’s all we’d have. | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

Never mention of illegal wars, covid corruption, or Brexit costs. All enourmous costs. Its almost like the real agenda is being anti the welsh language. |

The NHS is not free you pay NI, VAT and income tax to fund it. It is funded from General taxation as well as corporation tax Unfortunately the NHS is very inefficient in the way it is run wasting billions a year with no accountability to anyone as the NHS thinks it will be funded from a bottomless pit of money. GPs currently charge for 72,000,000 patients on their books despite the UK population being 67,000,000 yet none one seems to interested in these 5 million patients that don't exist. | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) |

See, you're at it again. There isn't an outcry about people speaking Welsh. The outcry is about where the Senedd spend their money when we have public services failing badly and peole are dying because the NHS is under such pressure, You were all for the 20mph zones because it "saves lives" even though the Senedd used twice as much money as needed to be. Yet when we talk about other areas where money could be spent more wisely, you disagree. Besides, why the whataboutery? Whatabout England, I thought you were happy that we "do things differently in Wales" but not when it comes to wasting money apparently. Question, how much does Westminster spend "promoting" non English languages across the country? Those multi lingual signs etc, are they in areas where the majority of people do not speak English as a first language? | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) | Login to get fewer ads

No, you are at it again, blaming the money spent on the Welsh language as being one of the causes of the upheaval in the NHS. The Welsh government spends half of it’s total budget on health and social services which amounts to £12 billion pounds, it spends £23 million pounds on the Welsh language which is a small fraction of the total budget. Yes, I was and still am in favour of the 20mph limit, you weren’t stating that a lot of people were going to be inconvenienced just for the sake of saving a few lives. You look on the money spent on the Welsh language as being a waste of money, I don’t. | ![](/images/avatars/9937.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

The NHS was set up to provide medical care to all at the point of need, irrespective of their ability to pay. You can stick your taxation, NI and VAT where the sun dont shine. Its free when you need it and thats exactly what Farage wants to take away. | ![](/images/avatars/9736.gif) |

And again a failure to comprehend because that is not what I said. Step away from what happened to Wales 600 years ago, step away from when the language was nearly beaten to death, step into the modern world. In a modern world people and their qualiuty of life should come first. All you have is name callling and whataboutery. I'm critical of the Senedd because they waste too much money when we clearly are not going to get a massive increase in funding and the Senedd always claims we are underfunded. Seeing as we are so underfunded, shouldn't the Senedd be very much more careful where they spend OUR money? It's not a single subject argument, it's not Welsh v anything. It's a bout a wasting of tens of millions when we don't have tens of millions to waste. Some of you line up to defend the Senedd and throw in the "what about Westminster" line all the time. How about holding our own government to account? How about prioritising the living? AS the OP pointed out, despite the money spent on Welsh the number of speakers is still falling. Then there was the money wasted by not planning the 20mph and implementing it properly. We have the hundreds of millions wasted on Cardiff airport. We have the Welsh momey thrown at private businesses that turn out to be little more than rip offs. Then of course we have the 50% increase in the number of Welsh politicians that will also cost tens of millions. And the OP is not fake news, therefore.....can you comprehend yet? | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

The Senedd waste is about 1% of Westminsters waste. Brexit alone has cost the UK £140bn so far, according to new analysis, and could see the nation £311bn worse off by the middle of the next decade So why aren’t you calling out the London rule waste..? Instead you go after relatively tiny sums you believe are wasted in Wales. If we did not know better it might look like you have an anti-Senedd agenda to start with ….and you enjoy finding populist topics that support that agenda. The gammons enjoy your posts for sure. Lets see you get after Westminster and you might regain some credibility. Otherwise you are fake news. | ![](/images/avatars/9736.gif) |
