At least it’s better than teachers beating pupils in order to stop them speaking Welsh eh?

Number of Welsh-speakers lowest in eight years on 09:33 - Jan 24 by Whiterockin | The Welsh public are forgoing basic services to heavily subsidise the Welsh language. If the number of speakers is dropping as so many are not interested, should the budget be reduced to balance this. |
No the Welsh Language is a massive part of our Welsh heritage, I wish I could speak it.

Number of Welsh-speakers lowest in eight years on 14:34 - Jan 24 by Kilkennyjack | Not really, the uk govt spends more on the English National Opera than is spent on the welsh language. Its a false choice to suggest its the NHS vs the welsh language. Stop having illegal wars and invest in both. Align with EU and invest in both. Bin the Royals and invest in both. See politics is about choices. |
This is about where Wales spends its money and you are dead right, politics is about choices. The Senedd chooses to spend money on the language when the NHS is struggling. Then Drakeford doubles down and says we have too many hospitals. Yes it's about chpoices but why does the Senedd keep making such bad choices and why do you defend the choices that see so many people in Wales suffering?

Learn it then. Nobody is stopping you. If you care about it that much then take lessons. There are many things that are a massive part of Welsh history and culture that we don't see anymore, Druids, hanging our enemies skulls around our doorframes and human sacifice but we don't want those back, right? Cultures evolve and change. Meanwhile people are suffering and dying because we don't provide adequate healthcare. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yes 14 years of Tory rule has collapsed our NHS. Hopefully Labour will make it work again. The Tories want it to fail so they privatise it.

Sadly my few remaining grey cells are not able to understand S4C and their programmes and news items , to my shame I know . Even my siblings would be hard pressed to speak Welsh as a language now .

There has been no Tory rule in Wales who run our NHS it was/is Labour which lags behind the Tory English NHS. Nothing to do with the decreasing Welsh language anyway.
Number of Welsh-speakers lowest in eight years on 08:47 - Jan 25 with 643 views | AnotherJohn | I can understand the wish to maintain the use of the Welsh language for those who wish to speak it. My concern is that the legal requirement for certain organisations to comply with the Welsh Language Standards causes major inconvenience and costs, so that things have gone too far. To take one example in an organisation known to me, all emails sent to more than one person (except where the language of all is known not to be Welsh) should be bilingual in Welsh and English. All official emails come around with the Welsh version first, and I often wonder how much time the English-speaking majority spend in scrolling down before they can understand what the message is about, Should an English language monoglot employee wish to send an email to multiple colleagues, for instance to notify others of a forthcoming event, they must send the message to the translation unit, which requires several days notice. More generally all service users have a right to conduct their dealings with the organisation in Welsh. As most employees do not speak Welsh this again means that they must be assisted by a specialist unit when this need arises. If over a short period a larger number of service users insisted that all communication did take place in Welsh then the organisation would have nowhere near the capacity to deliver that. You might very well say that the answer at that stage would be to employ more Welsh speakers to cope with the demand, but as the organisation contains employees with various types of specialist expertise, I cannot see that this would be possible., [Post edited 25 Jan 9:54]

That's the part I really don't understand , the clowns in cardiff aren't trying to supress the language , there are more Welsh medium schools available than say 40 years ago , there are plenty of classes available and yet its atm in decline .I'm not against it far from it but why don't people like many things these days take responsibility for their actions or in this case inaction , its doesn't cost a fortune to learn and if the will is there people will . BTW not a dig at anyone on here ,just a general statement.

The Welsh language and it's integration in business should be a benifit in Wales, not a hindrance as it currently is. This is yet another reason for the resentment by non Welsh speakers particularly in business owners and management. This is a major hindrance when trying to get companies to relocate to Wales, the Senedd don't make it easy.

What an absolutely load of crap. Has somebody from North Wales pissed on your chips sometime? I have had good friends in North Wales for the past 40 years, they moved there from Leicester, it is a large family and the father had a business there for many years until his passing a few years ago. The family love it there and simply wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

One of the annoying things is that official communications have to be bilingual, twice as much paper, extra postage and whatever other extra costs there are. If people wish to communicate purely in Welsh then why should they get the English version too, it works both ways, it's a waste whichever version you are so why can't they just give people the choice, give them an option to have letters in Welsh OR English. It's simply another occassion of a policy being put in with too little thought and planning and to hell with the extra expenses because we aren't paying, the public are. And oooh, lets still keep spouting on about being short of money too, lets employ another 36 MS's too and the extra costs they bring so we have more voices to moan about Westminster.

To be fair S there’s never been more opportunity to learn Welsh as there is now. The fact you haven’t taken those opportunities shows that you are not serious about it and you are representative of many people in Wales.

Well the latest suggestion from Labour, here in Wales is to decrease the amount of hospitals. I don’t think that policy will improve the NHS but you may see it differently😒

No need, to google or to thank you. Do any of your official letters come digitally? Council tax bills, hospital appointments etc, they come by post, they have to legally speaking because email isn't yet considered secure enough. Maybe one day they will be safe enough but not yet. No need to thank me for correcting your obvious mistake. PS, are you fluent in Welsh yet?
