The Swansea Independent BREXIT is done thread 15:41 - Dec 24 with 28338 views | KeithHaynes | Mr Johnson thanks people on all sides for "finding the philosophers stone" to get a deal. He adds: "This deal above all means certainty, for the aviation industry, the hauliers... the police, the border forces, and all those that keep us safe. "It means certainty for our scientists who will be able to work together on great collective projects. "But above all it means certainty for business."

Leave with a deal wasnât mentioned, neither was leave without a deal. I donât even recall people talking about leaving without a deal, the David Davisâs of the world were all talking about deals. If a deal wasnât important, or necessary and WTO so great then why has so much effort been expended on getting one? Why didnât Boris just pull up the drawbridge, reclaim 100% our fishing rights and tell the EU to do one? I suspect the answer is that trading on WTO terms would adversely impact on large sectors of our economy and affect our prosperity. Anyway, we are out and need to look toward and make the most of our future.

We always needed the threat of no deal, itâs the only thing that would bring the EU to the negotiating table. When the remainers held the power in parliament along with a biased and corrupt speaker no deal was effectively off the table. They would have just extended the deadline indefinitely.

People expected no deal, it's what they voted for and it should have been what they got, the electorate have been betrayed.

Yes indeed, they had no thought whatsoever of a deal when they voted.

Drivel. No deal wasnât even on most peopleâs radar, everything was geared up around how easy a deal would be. As someone who voted leave, I do not feel that leaving with a deal had betrayed my vote. Iâd feel betrayed if weâd left without one. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Well it was completed fairly quickly. They only started negotiating in February and itâs been delayed several times because of covid. Weâve been told by remainers from the start that deals like this take years but theyâve got it done in ten months. Itâs amazing what can be achieved when you are actually pressured by a deadline instead of kicking the can down the road.

Itâs amazing what can be achieved when over 80% of the UK economy isnât included but left as âwill deal with laterâ. Plus the vast majority of what is included is exactly the same as was in the Political Declaration that was negotiated by May. The difference is that NI has been effectively made part of the Republic of Ireland. It is what it is. Itâs far better to have a trade agreement in place, albeit one for goods only, (which by definition favours the EU given they export goods to us in return for us exporting services to them, which are not included) than attempt to negotiate one after the fact. No deal is a myth, unless anyone thought that we wouldnât agree a trade deal with our biggest trading partners - everyone saw what that would look like for a few days last week, hence the pressure on the U.K. negotiation team to just agree what was wanted by the EU on fisheries and the level playing field provisions. Itâs completely pointless anyone still arguing over it. We just have to see what will play out, and hope that the drag on UK business of an enormous amount of additional red tape will be more than made up for by an ability to strike country specific deals elsewhere (which we donât have at this point - the deals in place are roll over deals from the EU). Everyone, whatever they voted, needs to hope that it all settles down. People wanting failure to say âI told you soâ need to remember that a vibrant UK economy is needed by everyone. One thingâs for sure. The Covid situation has made brexit far less important than it would have been without it. The shock to the system will make all else pale in to relative insignificance and new alliances and industries will emerge as they always do in such a situation. We have to hope the U.K. is able to capitalise.

I know loads of leavers and they wanted out, they did not want foreigners coming here, they did not want anything to do with the Germans, French, Latins, East Europeans etc, simple as that, they don't listen to politicians they just wanted out and now they have been betrayed as they would see it they are not out but half in and half out. The great British public hey. [Post edited 29 Dec 2020 17:28]

a lot of people voted to leave not because they hate europeans etc , but didn't want to be ruled by them ,that's a subtle difference .

That is why Wales voted to leave the EU. They prefer to be part of the democratic UK rather than the undemocratic EU. The people of Wales have spoken.
