Why is our fishing industry so tiny? What has hindered our maritime island nation in expanding in that area in the last forty odd years or so?

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

There is hardly any fish in the sea

Exclusion zones won't change that much

We get most of our fish from Iceland and norway UK trawlers sold their licences to the spanish, they sell their fish abroad because they pay more, they don't give a fvck about us

Our fishing fleet was much larger 30 plus years ago but there's a lot more to it's decline than simply blaming the EU.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

MSC labelled fish is everything to British fishermen. Without this logo they don't attract a market from abroad (apparently).
With this accreditation , which basically states everything is environmentally sound and sustainable there are strict rules, quotas , regulations to follow.

Sort of agree as I can remember a BBC Wales report years ago relating how skippers from Haverfordwest were selling their licenses to Spanish factory ships to catch and land fish in our waters. Rick Stein buying Cornish crab in China...yes China ,cheaper than I need the UK!

However, the EU appear desperate to maintain access to our waters, I'm assuming to prevent a major loss of employment to the EU fleet, notably the Spanish and French.

British companies sold their quotas. Spanish firms own 88 per cent of Welsh fishing rights and most of the quota from the Bristol Channel to the Scottish border.

Dutch and Icelandic firms control most of our East Coast fishing. It went like the rest of British utilities , sold to foreign companies and govts for a fast buck

Post Brexit, will the UK firms still be able to sell their quotas to EU fleets, or will they have to get back to sea?

You mean the Iceland whose vessels were involved in 35 ramming incidents whilst they protected their fishing grounds against the British in the 70s and who now stil enjoy large catches of cod?

Or the British who gave away our fishing grounds and whose fishing fleet was largely laid up and scrapped for recycling whilst EU trawlers pillaged the grounds to near extinction?

Great to see the International Monetary Fund now predict UK growth post BREXIT will outstrip the rest of the EU including Germany now they know we are leaving, along with Bovill reporting incoming financial groups will greatly out number exiting groups.

Strange how the usual remoaner suspects have suddenly shut up and chosen to ignore this data from the experts.

So it was all project fear all along.

The UK economy will outpace the struggling eurozone in the first two years after Brexit, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted for the first time.

Britain also outpaced the monetary union in 2019, giving it three straight years of faster growth, according to the IMF's latest forecasts.

The fund slashed growth across the eurozone, warning that a weaker German recovery and a slowdown in Spain will weigh on the region’s economy this year.

It also cut global economic forecasts again for 2020, but pointed to tentative signs that a worldwide slowdown is coming to an end.

City AM

By October last year 1,441 EU-based firms had applied to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for temporary permissions to operate in the UK after Brexit, according to figures obtained via a Freedom of Information request from regulatory consultancy Bovill.

Over 1,000 of these firms do not currently have an office in the UK, suggesting they intend to establish their first office after the UK’s departure from the EU on 31 January.

“These figures clearly show that many firms see the UK as Europe’s premier financial services hub,” said Michael Johnson, a consultant at Bovill.
