C4 Tory Leadership debate on 13:30 - Jun 17 by bluey_the_blue | True, but the real underlying issue is he still believes he can get May's deal through parliament. His tactic is an ineffectual threat. Given it's been voted down how many times now, he's literally on another planet. Anyone lookimg to get a deal shouldn't look at what Parliament has voted down but what Parliament has shown agreement for and right now it's only the Brady amendment that matches that criteria. |
The Brady amendment, isn't that the one that says the solution to the Irish border issue is unspecified "alternative arrangements" How will that negotiation go? UK, "Monsieur Barnier, we would like to replace the backstop with alternative arrangements" M Barnier, "what alternative arrangements do you have in mind?" UK, " We don't know" It's up there with Dave's unloseable keys pitch to Dragons den on the royle family. That is genuinely the intellectual level the debate is taking place on.

EU are reportedly already looking at potential technological solutions. Like it or not, that's the ONLY "solution" Parliament have backed. You could equally pitch Parliament to EU as follows... UK "Ok, we don't want May's deal so let's get it sorted" M Barnier "Ok what do you want?" UK "Dunno, but we'll remain in perpetual limbo"

They have been since all this started mun. There’s a reason we still have the backstop. And I’m sure I don’t need to point out the pointlessness of the only thing parliament voted for being the only thing it can’t have on account of it not existing.

We have the backstop as it's the simplest thing EU wanted. If mankind gave up on innovation because something hasn't been implemented already, the whole world would look like Swansea...

We have the backstop because it’s currently the only solution. Don’t you think that both the EU and the UK would have eagerly grasped an alternative and put all this nonsense to bed if there was an alternative solution?

The backstop is the simplest solution from EU's perspective. That's the sole reason it's there unless you wish to attribute malice to EU.

Yet over six months ago, political declaration had both sides looking into technology to replace backdrop. Time, effort, money. That's why EU want the absolute simplest solution.

Yes, the political declaration pledges to look at future alternatives. The UK decided it had to leave the EU now. Hence the backstop as the only current and viable arrangement. You want to leave the EU now, backstop it is. Simple fact.

The backstop isn’t a solution. It’s what is kept in place until a solution is found as the alternative is a breach of our previously agreed international treaties. I realise these things don’t matter anymore.

The UK wants to leave, There is currently no technology that allows the UK to leave, including leaving SM and CU without breaking GFA. Uk is confident such technology will exist soon. Therefore logical solution is,that UK leaves now , but maintains regulatory alignment until these , soon to be in place, solutions are available. What possible name could we call this solution.? Brexiteers - “we have to control our borders” Also Brexiteers - “how dare the EU want to control their borders” Brexiteers - “we can give £350m a week to our NHS’ Also Brexiteers - ‘the NHS is sh*t and it’ll be a lot better if we let the Americans have access to it’. Brexiteers - ‘we will be able to negotiate far better trade deals if we’re on our own’ Also Brexiteers ‘our negotiators are utter sh*t and that’s why we have such a bad deal from the EU’ Brexiteers - ‘the only thing that matters is the sovereignty of our parliament’ Also Brexiteers - ‘parliament should be suspended to allow a f*ckwit dictator to force through a no deal brexit against their will’. Brexiteers - ‘we’ll have the best deal ever because German car manufacturers are desperate for our business’ Also Brexiteers - ‘we always said we wanted to leave without a deal’. Just don’t call them stupid.

A Tory solution to a Tory created problem not going through because it keeps being voted down by right wing Tories and their swivel eyed loony mates from Ulster. Yeah, Bluey will accept all that.
