Club announcement pending 20:58 - Jul 20 with 40431 views | KeithHaynes | Sorry we can’t bring any more than this at the moment, but it’s only fair we place on record we are told the club are about to make an announcement. It would be wrong to speculate any further at this time.

Club announcement pending on 13:27 - Jul 21 by Whiterockin | Try keeping an open mind. From coopers side he has delivered a play off place and a play off final. From the owners point of view we are in the same league as when he arrived. Its all about opinions. |
so then there could be a compromise? Cooper could argue he was a player short of that promotion last season...he spoke often of "a recognised striker", which I interpret as "goal scorer"....he was given two Ameriacan loanees both recovering form long term injury with little game time...Morris did show promise before his injury the rest we know The issue now though is why is this still rumbling on with 17 days to go before the first game of the season?

Club announcement pending on 13:37 - Jul 21 by Dr_Parnassus | We didn’t sack Sousa, Sousa was poached. I don’t believe we would have sacked him either unless results significantly downturned, which appeared likely given the way the players disliked him. We progressed in terms of a single league position (8th to 7th) and a single point (68 to 69), but in reality that was hardly significant progression. Coopers first season we went from 10th to 6th (65 points to 70), his second we went from 6th to 4th (70 points to 80). Thats real tangible progression. We made it clear that we were not going to sell Gylfi unless we got £50m. It’s not disingenuous in the slightest to believe we didn’t want to sell and would have if he didn’t refuse to go on tour and force the move. I fully believe we would have stood firm, which is why it took to the end of the window to sort it, I don’t think we had any desire to sell for the amount we did. Cooper is a professional, I’m sure he wouldn’t down tools. But he may threaten it in order to work a deal for him that is in keeping with what he deserves, this is what happens in football. Would Gylfi have continued to refuse to play? Probably not. But the fact he threatened it made his position within the side rather untenable. Is this what had happened with Cooper? Who knows. But what’s clearly illogical is to suggest the club want to part ways with him due to league performance, which has clearly been outstripping expectation every year. |
I don’t think many, accepting the odd one or two delusional and entitled posters, think finishing 4th and losing the playoff final is a failure of a season. That’s to his credit. Playing style and the trajectory we seemed to be heading in for a decent chunk of the end of last season are valid concerns. He’d have to change his playing style completely without Ayew. We won’t be able to rely on bring ultra defensive and nicking a goal with a bit of individual flair this season. Is Cooper up to that? None of us know. I don’t think he’d make the playoffs this season, I doubt his replacement will either. If he does go, we can speculate as to why, but the fact will be we will have paid him to leave the football club. Re. The Gylfi point - yes, for £35m. Do you think we’d have let him go for £5m or on a free just because he was kicking off?
Club announcement pending on 13:57 - Jul 21 with 1826 views | Dr_Parnassus | Steve Cooper is stepping down from his position as Swansea City head coach little more than two weeks before the start of the new Championship season. It is understood that an official announcement will be made within the next 24 hours, confirming that Cooper and Swansea have agreed to part company by mutual consent. The 41-year-old is now expected to take a break from management. Although Cooper led Swansea to the Championship play-offs in each of his two seasons in charge, the relationship between the Welshman and key figures at the club has been strained for some time, and there was also a clear sense that he would welcome a fresh challenge. Cooper was shortlisted for the vacancies at Crystal Palace and Fulham this summer, yet nothing materialised and in many ways that left both parties in a difficult position, especially as the former England Under-17 coach had entered the final year of his contract. Why is Cooper leaving? His time at Swansea had run its course. Cooper clearly felt that he had taken the club as far as he could – this promises to be a challenging season with the parachute payments coming to an end and the prospect of more key players departing – and there was also some tension behind the scenes. As for Swansea, they risked going through the motions for a season if Cooper stayed on. Is this a surprise? Not to Swansea supporters. There was a feeling after the play-off final defeat against Brentford in May that Cooper was delivering a farewell message as he reflected on the previous two years in charge. On top of that, Cooper has been strongly linked with other jobs and it was obvious that he saw his future elsewhere. Who might the club turn to next? This decision hasn’t come out of the blue for those working inside the club and that means Swansea have had the chance to sound out replacements; an appointment is expected swiftly. Swansea will target a coach who is keen to work with young players and play an attractive brand of football. It is understood that they already have a name in mind.

Regarding Gylfi: Of course not, but if he was only worth £4.5m maximum to the club then absolutely. As for paying Cooper to leave, that’s what you have to do when a position becomes untenable and someone has expressed their desire to leave. The reports breaking in the last few minutes suggest Swansea faced coasting with an apathetic manager at the helm. He wanted out, clearly. There was tension behind the scenes (that was clear in January). Being paid 3k a week for a top Championship manager, you can’t blame him. The equation is now who can we get in willing to accept that money that can deliver what he has been able to? ............ “Why is Cooper leaving? His time at Swansea had run its course. Club announcement pending on 10:40 - Jul 21 by Prettyvisitor | Exactly this, you have to question the intentions of Winter wanting rid of a manager who's so successful on a decreasing budget, literally makes no sense. I don't even think it's purely financial, i think Winter probably wanted rid of him from the get go. Cooper publicly challenging him on the selling of Peterson behind his back was an early indication of how things were going to go. Just feel he probably wants to install his own yes man, someone who'll stay quiet and not question any outgoings or lack of a budget. |
We finished fourth - no prizes for that. We should have finished in the top two - he’s accountable for missing out on the autos. I’d agree with you if, like last year we snuck into the playoffs on the last day and failed. A play off final is only a success if you win it.

So you reckon we’d let say Jamal Lowe or Connor Roberts or whoever is worth £4.5m now break their contract and just leave if they were apathetic? The post you have just shared strongly implies that there was no change in relationship after the Palace and Fulham interviews, that they had been at loggerheads for quite some time. That what a lot of us were assuming about him wanting out and the club wanting him out all summer was actually correct. It looked that way when he was speaking to other clubs and we weren’t commenting. It also makes it incredibly unlikely that we asked Palace for a prohibitively high compensation figure.

There is no way we should have finished in the top 2. Could we have finished in the top 2? Maybe, incredibly unlikely though. “Should” we have? No way. As for no prizes for 4th, there most certainly is. The league system prize money is handed out in position order. There is also television rights and other financial awards for finishing 3rd-6th.

What divine right did we have to finish in the top two? Did we have a much better quality of squad than either Norwich or Watford both of whom had spent the previous season in the PL and pretty much had the same core of players?

No, they don’t have a ceiling of value attached to them. They have limitless financial potential really. Cooper has a £3.5m and a £4.5m clause in his contract with less than 12 months remaining on his contract. If the option is him going through the motions at the expense of the club then absolutely it makes sense to come to some mutual agreement. Same with anyone who contractually has a small value ceiling in their contract. Celina for example, didn’t he have a clause from memory? If he was disruptive and not wanting to play, then he absolutely may be shipped off to whoever would take him, even if it meant us paying part of his salary. That’s not to say we wouldn’t prefer a fully committed Celina to stay. The reports coming out suggest it was the club that tried to initiate contract talks after the play off final, which were fruitless. Something has clearly changed since then and not a ball has been kicked, so to suggest it’s performance related or that the club wanted him out “all summer” is not correct. This seems like a falling out and Cooper making it clear he wants out. This seems like a culmination of things coming to a head recently with the Palace talks. Don’t see how anyone can read that any differently. You don’t try to initiate contract talks with a manager you want to leave. [Post edited 21 Jul 2021 14:25]

We have been spoilt recently and it can be difficult to regulate your own expectations. I try to be as balanced as I can on here and there’s no doubt that 4th and the play off final is a very good season. People can make points about the way Cooper sets his teams out or the results we were getting towards the end of the season and I won’t argue with them. If we do go up again, I’ve no idea what the criteria for those who think 4th in the Championship is failure would be.

We had it in our hands and we threw it away. We were in the top two for a fir portion of the season and then promptly lost four games on the trot - two draws (one recovering to draw at home against the bottom side) and only one twice in that 8 game spell. That’s down to the manager, nobody else. It beats me how come you happy clappers are so happy to applaud failure - that is ultimately what it was.

Doc The Cooperouts will see this as vindication...like you I see no logic in the club wanting to lose an "asset" such as Cooper...as you say low cost with a high return..and good contacts regarding loan players. This talk of style would have little substance with the owners....also re performance lets compare us to Brentford in 2018/2019 they finished 11th one place below us Frank took over in October that year, the following season he took them to the playoff final and they lost a year later again he took them to a final and they won getting promoted so it took Thomas the Tank 3 seasons to get promotion .....nowhere near in his first but playoffs 2 and 3rd...Coops meanwhile got us to the play offs in his first season and then a final in the 2nd...so performance wise he is actually ahead of Frank ! As you say its all about a falling out..and remuneration issues...maybe Winter and the Yanks blame him for us not winning the final or getting automatic promotion I guess we will never know but this does show the ineptitude of our CEO

Every player has a value. They may fluctuate unlike buy out clauses, but they still have values. From what I’m reading, you reckon we would have let Gylfi walk if he was worth £4.5m to the club but was disruptive, but the same wouldn’t apply to current players (doesn’t have to be the two examples, just any worth around that amount)? I’m only going on the article you posted on this thread, but if it was a farewell message after the Brentford game (and it did look like one). Then he has been wanting/expecting to leave since then at the latest. By your own logic (which I agree with) if he’s wanted out since then and the club don’t want an apathetic manager, then it’s fair to assume they have wanted him out since the moment they realised he had his heart set on going.

Well this was 3 months ago, Cooper reportedly demanding a bumper new deal:- https://www.teamtalk.com/news/exclusive-swansea-boss-steve-cooper-wants-bumper-n Then Wales Online reporting the club “tried” to initiate contract talks with him over a new deal after the play off final. Then the Palace stuff. As you say, the story paints itself. To suggest the club went from trying to get him to sort a new contract at the end of the season to wanting him out for performance related reasons before a ball is kicked at the start of the next, despite equalling our points record in the division in the season just gone - just doesn’t stack up. I think this has been brewing from Cooper for quite some time. From the frustrations in January where he wasn’t given what he needed on the pitch, he made that clear. It appears from his point of view it’s been a complete breakdown of relations since then. Nobody can convince me of the logic that the club wanted him out. I think it’s more a case of accepting bridges were burned and a working relationship no longer possible. With less than 12 months left on the contract I support why waste time. I just hope they were well clear of Coopers intentions to quit long ago and have someone lined up, otherwise this could be a disaster.

No player has a fixed value until someone wants to pay it. Their value is related to performance and there is no ceiling to that. Bales went from £10m to £90m in a few seasons. Players don’t tend to have mutual terminations, it’s more the managerial route to things. Players get left out of the side and made to rot in the reserves or forced out on loan (both of which is essentially paying them not to play). Which yes, if Gylfi, Roberts, Lowe (or anyone) refused to play and made it clear they don’t want to be a part of the club, I fully believe that fate would befell them. You conflated him wanting to leave with the club wanting him to leave. He may well have wanted out all summer, but the bone of contention was the notion that the club wanted him out. Which was and still is bizarre. The reports clearly suggest the club tried to enter into negotiations regarding a new contract, you don’t do that if you want the manager to leave. If there was an eventual resignation that he must go for the good of the club (as it appears has just happened) then that is nothing to do with performance and everything to do with the prospect of being forced to go through the motions with a manager not wanting to be there. Which again is what is reported. Why he doesn’t want to be here is the next question. Logic again would say his ambitions are not met by the clubs, he did not get what he wanted in January and also financial as reported he wanted a bumper new deal (as he most probably deserved).
