Genuine questions which I feel deserve a thread of their own

What made you vote leave or remain?
Based on the facts now, would you change your decision?

I voted remain as I wasn't convinced by either sides argument so I stuck with the status quo.

I'd stick to my decision, simply because there is no tangible evidence that leaving sorts us out in the short to medium term.

Question for the brexiters (I doubt I will get a coherent answer)

Give us all just 1 EU law that has had a negative or detrimental effect on your life in the last 30 years?

The problem is nobody seems to have any idea how much of our law comes from Europe. Some claim it’s as high as 85%, others 12%.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I may be imagining things but I'm pretty sure we had the option of limiting migration from those countries but tony biliards take up the option.

Correct. Many states applied a lengthy transition period, the UK chose not to. I can also imagine that not enough attention was subsequently paid to enforcing employment legislation. Legislation which is deemed by Brexiteers as unnecessary red tape imposed by Brussels.

And there it actually is.

At last a post with honesty. Good for you Alfie. Seriously.

Brexit is desired because it’s getting one over on liberals!

Full stop. It’s the only reason many wanted it. And they don’t care about the awful ramifications because deep down they believe that it’s only the liberals that will suffer.

The greatest con trick of all time. Making people believe that somehow the muticulturalism, globalisation, gender issues, same sex equality, climate change concerns that they are so terrified of, is somehow the fault of the EU and will all just go away with Brexit.

It’s laughable. It really is.

Another day, another brand new theory which you have totally convinced yourself with.

A lot of it is legislative framework around regulations. Examples would be control of zoonoses- the requirements for each country is around an EU directive but are applied nationally. A lot is done by amendment to existing legislation rather than and EU law per se. This is the case for animal experimentation in the U.K. which is governed by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. This is applied via a code of practice and annexes enforced by the HOme Office Inspectorate, but was changed in around 2008 to fit in with EU-wide practices and regulations relating to welfare. The act is still the same, but the annexes were changed. So we are still governed by U.K. law, but it’s application was modified by the EU.

Thats about the only sensible argument I have seen on a detrimental effect of the EU. A lot of regulations based on the environment and safety are just being used by lazy/
Skinflint employers who don't Want to enforce-easier to blame EU. Or the rich who don’t want tougher controls on tax evasion/avoidance

I think it’s a desire to return to the golden days of empire.

They were great you know. No NHS, limited access to a range food, doff your cap to the landed gentry, no riff raff at the theatre and restaurants. TB, infant mortality, constant threat of war. no welfare state. Homosexuality illegal

All great though as there will be no foreigners taking our back breaking, crappy jobs in the chicken slaughterhouse, cleaning hospitals, picking fruit.

Late reading the thread but I'll add my views

I voted remain.

Reasons I've had my working life but as I think it will take at least 10 years for things to settle down after we leave I wasn't going to vote that on my 2 working sons.

I still believe that we will have a hard slog for 10 years and then maybe get back to where we were pre the vote.

Governed by the EU or UK doesn't make that much difference to me. Yes we can change our Government from right to left etc but it's the global market and big business where the power is.

It’s not a brand new theory. It was obvious from the minute the vote happened.

And it’s also what Alfie said in the post I was responding to.

But if you don’t think the term ‘remoaner’ is largely synonymous with terms such as ‘libtard’ or ‘lefty’ or similar when used by many Brexiteers, you are not paying attention. Which to be fair, would not be a surprise.

Agreed. Or certainly a return to the days of us fighting the Germans and / or the Soviets.

Yet again today there’s been a reference to the ‘Berlin Blockade’. By the idiotic Peter Lilley, giving his views on how awful the EU is to the BBC from his home in France!

It’s sickening.

So Alfie saying what he did confirms everything you’ve said about leave voters earlier to be true?

And if you think those sort of insults are only coming from the ‘brexidiots’ side of the argument then it’s you who is very much not paying attention.

So living on the continent must mean you agree with concept of EU?

Does not compute.

We're part of Europe, the continent. EU is an artificial construct attempting to homogenise and failing.

Yes to trade block, no to everything else.

I didn’t say it was only coming from one side. Neither have I used the term brexidiot. In fact, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone use it on here. Whereas remoaner is used pretty constantly.

You’re just playing whataboutery again.

Where did I say that Bluey?

I simply said he was moaning about the EU from his home in France,

This constant twisting of what is being said is becoming really boring.

The UK is, of course, also an artificial construct.

Well having been to Germany, Netherlands, France, Spain, Czech Republic and ROI in last two years I don’t see much homogenisation beyond currency in all but one. Most also seemed gentler, kinder places. I can’t say my recent trips to the US have given that feeling with perhaps the exception of Athens, GA and the friendliness in New Orleans.

I do love the way you’re suddenly throwing accusations out about people in LONDON (gasp) only a week after you said you’d vote for Boris Johnson in a general election. What do you think he thinks about people with ‘crappy jobs’ ? He referred to the £270k a year he gets from the Telegraph as ‘chickenfeed’ by the way, so have a think before you answer...

But on a more general note. I live in London because I had to move to find the work I wanted to do. To be criticised for that is pathetic. I wasn’t born with any more of a silver spoon than you were. Nor was Warwick. The ONLY thing you care about is your own financial position. Your concern for others only rears its head when you’re trying to do the whole ‘they’re the elites’ bit. In fact, exactly what you told me I was wrong about in your last post.

I’d vote Boris to get brexit sorted and because Corbyn is unelectable and the Liberal Democrat’s are self confessed undemocratic. Not quite sure why you felt the need to bring that into it to be honest.

Where have I criticised you for moving to London? My sister lived in Crouch End for years and my brother Redhill in Surrey.
I referred to you both as London’s finest because you both like to mention how well off you are and how you’ll benefit from the tax breaks for wealthy after Brexit.

This has nothing to do with my financial position, more to do with fact my mother in law and aunt work as crappy cleaners in Singleton hospital doing one of those crappy jobs only cheap foreign labour are willing to do apparently.

My vote was based on my financial position though yes, and everyone in the same industry as me. I’m yet to come across anyone in my industry across the land who disagrees with me either, but as always, you know best.

“referred to you both as London’s finest because you both like to mention how well off you are and how you’ll benefit from the tax breaks for wealthy after Brexit. ”

Sorry, but that is absolute nonsense.

I never talk about being well off or not well off. The only time I’ve ever mentioned anything to do with money is when I was being criticised about my motivation (accusations of ‘you only care about Brexit because it suits you elite’ type stuff) and I pointed out that a Boris Johnson government would probably make me better off not worse off as he would direct post Brexit remedial policies at people like me.

You are being grossly unfair. I haven’t said anything about ‘crappy jobs’. Ever. I agreed with the point about people harking back to empire. I even elaborated on that by mentioning people harking back to the war or the Cold War.

You know nothing about me. Stop presuming you do, and stop with the spiteful ‘you know best’ remarks as well.

I wouldn’t dream of saying I know more than you do about whatever your specialism is. ( I’ve frequently said I completely understand why you think you’ll be better off, but I’ve also said that the brake on immigration you anticipate will not happen. In fact, since I’ve told you that, several measures have been announced that confirm my view).

Why do you constantly presume to know more than me about mine? Or think I’m being a know it all when I say what will happen. You don’t call wingstandwood a know it all when he talks about construction. It’s absolute bollox.

Cheap labour from Europe has driven wages even lower and allowed companies to use zero hour contracts etc!
