Completely agree with this and these are the reasons that Theresa May opted to stay away. I actually wonder of it would not have been better for the Tories to not field anyone at all. By putting Amber Rudd in it merely accentuated the fact that Theresa May was not there at all.

A good solid 20% of the reason I vote Conservative is that I find the sneering, jeering, childish approach by so many on the left completely off putting. As I have got older (35 now) I just tell people to grow up. Was outside a pub the other night in Pembrokeshire with a load of right on people who were eulogising about how cool their children were for being stoners. Fine I thought, each to their own. They were all chatty and lovely, appreciative of my job (mental health) and generally convivial. Until they found out I

a) voted for Brexit; and
b) will be voting Conservative.

I literally was ignored for the rest of the night. Now I couldn't care less but its indicative of the disgraceful attitude that some on the liberal left have. I am a true liberal - each to their own, their own opinions, mine is not better than yours, it's just different. In fact I love difference. But the il-liberal liberal left are in-tolerant of anything except their own world view.

Rant over!

I'd be inclined to believe that you're either making that up or extremely paranoid. Whether you're left or right or even brexit or remain, 99% of people couldn't give a monkeys once all the dust has settled.

That's what the focus should be on but we know it'll just end up with them all agreeing with each other on everything and ganging up on Nutall whilst a sycophantical audience boos and jeers like its a pantomime.

May should be there or at least a senior member of the Tory party just for the sake of openness and democracy but you can't blame her when these "debates" often descend into an absolute car crash of a shit throwing sound bite contest.

Ive just caught upon the "debate" and I have to say I was absolutely spot on on page 1 of this thread.

Some observations:

Did anybody see the hordes of activists outside the studio to give corbyn a heroes welcome with their banners and their slogans? How on earth did they all get up to Cambridge (a traditional Lib dem stronghold) so quickly considering corbyn only announced he was taking part about an hour before? Who is funding these people?

Rudd - clearly working for herself not the PM. Spent more time bigging up "the strong team" around Mrs may rather than Mrs may herself.

Corbyn - All bluster and ideology, no answers or common sense.

Robertson - typical SNP, blame Westminster and the English for things that the SNP have full control over. Very polished and well briefed like the rest of them.

Green woman - complete irrelevance

Wood - out of her depth. She doesn't speak for Wayyallls any more than Macho man randy savage does. I'm sure there are others in plaid Cymru who would do a better job.

Farron - I like him as a human being but listening to him trying to convince himself he accepts the will of the people whilst simultaneously trying to subvert it in any way he can makes me regularly face palm.

Nutall - UKIP are going down the tubes. Brexit is happening already so they've got no purpose left. They've always been a one man band and now Farage has buggered off this is all they have left. Goodbye UKIP, you did what you set out to do with barely a single elected official. Quite remarkable really.

Edit: forgot the audience. Clearly filled with these activists that follow corbyn around everywhere. Anyone notice they were all placed front and centre with the camera constantly on them?

It's a complete mockery and these TV debates should have no audience in the studio.

Only labour voters use twitter as well didn't you know?

No one said that though did they. I said it was heavily skewed towards Corbyn, and it is.

Look at the demographic of the voters for each party and the demographic of twitter if you don't believe me.

That's why it's being used as a strategy by Momentum. Same as it was for Trump.

This is the problem to be honest. Someone says something and it gets twisted out of all proportion and then mocked. The whole election has been full of it. Taking a snapshot of twitter to indicate support for Corbyn is like taking a snapshot of the letter page in the Times to indicate support for May.

Getting irritated beyond belief at this childishness.

Momentum, in answer to your first point.

You know, the Momentum that was started by Jon Lansman. He of the Highgate school followed by Cambridge education who lives in multi million pound house in Marylebone. Close friend of Corbyn since the seventies.

Much more connected with the 'ordinary' people than you could imagine. Or at least he would be if he ever met any of them.

Tell you what he's very good at though. Organising hordes of middle class champagne socialists to pretend they're downtrodden for the purposes of the media. And it's not that far to get them from London, where they all live, to Cambridge. Pad them out with the oppressed members of the Cambridge University Labour group. The one that he was a member of when he ran for president of the Cambridge Union with Andrew Marr as his running mate...

I think those YouGov polls will be heavily skewed to the left. The sort of person who spends 20 minutes filling in these YouGov surveys for the slim chance of winning one of the monthly cash prizes is likely to be fairly young and probably short on money. The sort of person who Labour appeal to.

YouGov was founded and is run by Tories

Nothing said in this debate will change people's votes.

Nothing.

I disagree bluey. Whatever your thoughts about JC the audience last night reacted VERY favourably to what he said.

And it's very likely people watching will have been impressed as well. It just depends how many.

Twitter is massively skewed in favour of Corbyn though Paul.

The conservative voters are not the ones using twitter.

Those were your exact words Lisa. It's not me being childish it's you being silly. Twitter, as with Facebook, doesn't lean anyway. Depending on what article you click or who you choose to follow determines whether it's skewed towards the tories or labour.

Tories centre-right, UKIP far right.

All other parties left leaning.

ComRes wanted a "representative" audience, well, it's clear Tory, UKIP supporters were outnumbered heavily in there. Given the number o Corbynistas outside the event, pretty clear organised support was there.

There was nothing of any substance whatsoever from any of the representatives there.

Yes, and that's not saying 'only Labour people use Twitter'.

And nonsense it doesn't lean either way. It's an age demographic thing. The platforms are used by younger people, who are generally more left leaning. Facebook has a higher average age usage than twitter and it's users have a higher average income.

If the audience was representative, then Torykippers would have been outnumbered. By 4:2, which is 2:1.

Gotta love this 'new' politics that Corbyn has introduced. The nicer, caring, sharing type of politics that isn't going to attack individuals.

Has a sitting prime minister ever done one of these debates by the way? Because I saw something earlier saying they had all refused to take part, and wasn't sure if that was true? I thought Cameron had done one last time?

No buts it's saying that conservatives are not the ones using twitter which implies only labour are using it to push their views, which is utter garbage.

You are basing that on the fact that young people mainly use twitter and they generally lean left, right? Well here's a stat, in a recent survey of people all under 40s,around 40% will vote labour and around 30% tories. That kind of ends this silly assumption that Most of twitter is labour biased.

5:2 actually...

Which is 2.5 : 1.

That's a silly breakdown though - it assumes the proportion of voters/potential voters for each party represented is equal. Greens, Plaid, SNP would thus have been well over-represented.

Cameron dodged it last time. Brown did it the time before, ironically after being pestered by Cameron who made a massive play of how the British public deserved it. Funny how his views changed.

Anyway, Corbyn belatedly did the right thing in attending. Not a fan of the 6 being there, it should be limited to the 3 parties standing nationally, but the public should get the opportunity to see those standing for election trying to defend their policies and lay out their visions.

It's a fascinating election, probably the most so I can recall. Genuinely didn't think it would be, however despite it all Labour are the ones broadly staying on message whilst the Tories capitulate. It's like Borgen all over again...
