Guidolin and Conte- An Italian Managerial Head to Head Written by BarneyLW on Friday, 9th Sep 2016 13:23
A different league in a different country for two familiar foes; on Sunday Francesco Guidolin's Swansea host Antonio Conte's Chelsea side. So how does the head to head record look from their previous encounters in Italy?
With four managers in the Premier League coming from the peninsula and if you wanted to add Jose Mourinho as a man with recent experience managing in Serie A, there will be no shortage of tacticians reuniting in England and Wales, with knowledge of each other's tactics, game plans and personalities. In short, the head to head between these two coaches makes worrying reading for Swansea fans, with Guidolin beating the former Italy manager just once. This came in the 2008/2009 season in the Italian Serie B, when Guidolin's Parma won 2-0 away at Bari, at that time managed by Conte. A year later, Conte picked up his first win against the man who was tipped to succeed him as Italian national team manager. Guidolin's Parma were beaten by Conte, this time managing Atalanta, after the two managers had achieved promotion with their respective roles at Bari and Parma. The remaining fixtures in this head to head give us a more accurate picture of where Swansea stand in relation to the size of their task Sunday. All in all in the head to head, Conte has 5 wins over Guidolin (including the aforementioned) with 2 draws. The most recent encounters come from Conte's time at Chelsea and Guidolin's time at Udinese. Indeed this statistical analysis is hardly shocking for the average fan reading, with Juventus having a long standing dominance in Italian football following their return from relegation in a match-fixing scandal. While Udinese under Guidolin exceeded expectations finishing 4th and 3rd, they could not beat The Old Lady in this period. With Chelsea looking rejuvenated under the passionate Conte, as well as the history between the two managers, this makes the clash at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday an all the more appealing one. It is worth noting that there has been a well highlighted mutual respect among the two, with the media keen to ramp up the history and fiery relationship to dramatise the already passionate Manchester derby taking place that same day. But what a home win would do for morale of the team and the fans if Frankie could finally put to rest the demons of previous encounters with Conte.

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? |
