It May Not Always Be Pretty-But Survival Looks Closer By The Day Written by BarneyLW on Tuesday, 22nd Mar 2016 06:20
Where do we go from here?
Captain Ashley Williams this week admitted the season has not been an enjoyable one for Swansea City. Inconsistency in the league, criticisms of the style of play and three different managers in the dugout. Indeed, the fans have not always had an enjoyable time, when comparing the seasons of old, but have relied heavily on the Wales skipper and his wholehearted performances to get the club away from relegation danger. But going forward, what is the plan for the club? Saturday saw the Swans beat virtually-doomed Aston Villa 1-0; like their previous home game, a 1-0 win against relegation rivals in a game destined to be last on any highlights show of your choice. Ultimately, in a results industry, 'victory' is the key word in this sentence, now on 36 points, with an array of teams below fighting to keep away from that bottom three, safety looks almost secure with seven games to go. So what now for the club? I don't think too many would begrudge the idea of strengthening the squad in the summer, even if just to boost the strength in depth. While a goalscorer is vital and has been a problem since the departure of Wilfied Bony over a year ago, I do believe Alberto Paloschi has all the qualities to succeed at the club. It is just a question of giving him time. What about the managerial situation? Even one like myself who felt such disappointment at the lack of time given to Gary Monk, survival was the ultimate goal-one that looks closer by the day. Alan Curtis has undoubtedly given credence to the belief by many that he is a living legend at the club- but late December and January taught us he is not a manager. Many shine better away from the limelight, and the coach was keen to distance himself from the main job following the appointment of Guidolin. So what about Francesco Guidolin? A veteran manager, who has been successful for decades in various jobs: The Italian's contract expires in the summer, yet does this mean another change to the hot-seat at the Liberty Stadium? His English has improved, he has expressed a desire to stay and whatever questions come about the excitement of football during the last two home games, the fact is results have ultimately improved in the second half of the season. To put it bluntly, the league standings do not lie. Questions have come over the formation adopted currently, with a sort of lop-sided diamond, and the lack of faith seemingly shown in Jefferson Montero. Although, without minimising the changes surrounding the club, what may be the best move for all concerned is to get to the end of the season, finish strongly and take a breather. Decisions will need to be made, do we look for a rebuilding job, or do we show faith in a manager and squad that will seemingly take us away from danger and into yet another Premier League Season?

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? |
