False number nine 23:13 - Oct 24 with 4717 viewsLogman

There's no point in playing Celar up top on his own on Saturday. When the ball gets booted up to him if we ever get out he will be out-muscled and out-paced and it will not stick. Then, if we can create any chances, again he is not going to beat the centre backs. We might be better off with a false number nine ten yards deeper to link with Chair, Smyth and Dembele and try to thread one of them through. Who could play in that position ? My choice would be Kolli but maybe Andersen or even Madsen could give it a go ?

If you spend that much money on a striker you have to play him really

I was thinking Madsen in the false 9 role. He's mastered the art of playing the false 6 position so far this season, so why not! Plus he is technically our 2nd top scorer this season.

If you buy a flashy Ferrari and it’s got the handbrake stuck on then you may as well leave it on the driveway and use your Ford Fiesta….. at least it does a job.
Then, do some work on the Ferrari, but if it’s a dud then move it on

The alternative is the Ferrari moves but when you need a utility vehicle for certain trips then so be it.
For me I’d be sticking Alfie up top for pace but that might be harsh on the kid

* I’m not saying Celar is a Ferrari by the way….. more a three wheeled blue car with two wheels flat

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Good shout Hooparoo.

I would swop Andersen for Chair though.

Saito Dembele Andersen

We are going to have to defend for the majority of the game and both Saito and Andersen have good defensive play. We can try to catch them on the break which will have to be at pace and Chair would slow that down.

Real shame that Frey is injured. With both him and Lloyd available I would have gone for one of them up top, alternating them with a half each. They can both defend from the front, charging down the opposition defences to squeeze them and force quick balls/mistakes which our crafty little midfield army of Number 10s could take advantage of. In the absence of Frey, I would still try this
with Lloyd at least. Playing Celar, you might as well play with 10 men. Maybe start with Lloyd and then when he's knackered, switch to the 4-3-3?

I'm reading that as 3 munchkins in goal, and Nardi up top. Brave inversion of the pyramid, that.

Good point about Chair slowing us down sometimes.

Morgan is not ready for a start and Lloyd is L2 standard at best.

Amazed people are calling for either to start.

And as to the nonsense about Chair? Jeez...

Yep, let's go to Turf Moor and drop the only player we have who actually knows how to keep possession. Great plan!

Can we go out yet?

Without Frey we don’t have a forward.

Perhaps we should try one of our misfiring midfielders/right back signings we brought in and see if they’re any good in the CF role.

More than 12 touches in the game and you get an extended year on your contract, Shot on target and it’s the full Hamaleinen.

Agree.

Plus, if we were to go to a False 10 set-up we'd have to have either lots of time to practice it or we'd have to have an exceptionally talented and/or intelligent player in that role.

Celar has a run of games now. I'd imagine we'll concentrate on that.

Also, if we were to go with the OP's suggestion we might as well tell Celar, after just a handful of games in a disjointed team, that he's useless and we're never going to pick him. Not convinced that's a great use of player resources, nor response to his performances, nor use of the money we've invested in him.

We can't keep writing people off like this, even if his early appearances haven't been promising (to put it mildly).

Have we ever beaten a Scott Parker side? He's not even that good. So annoying.

anyone remember when we tried Willock as a false 9 and it went so badly people wanted Warburton sacked

In many ways this is a terrible idea, but maybe it is worth trying Madsen further forward, somewhere near the 10 role? Try to get him to link up with Celar.

In Nourry-ball land, according to the stats PRE-recruitment, he's supposed to be above the Championship average for:

- shots on target
- progressive carries
- progressive passes
and
(wait for it)

- finishing

He has finished better than many to be fair

Pressing, tackling and aerial duels are not his strength - either on paper or from what we've seen on the pitch, and if it didn't happen in other leagues it's even less likely to happen in ours.

Maybe now's the time to desperately try to get more out of him and Celar by playing them closer to each other.

WTF is a false 9 anyway? Are they inverted? What about inside forwards? Has the Emperor got new clothes?!

Just give me a big number 9 and a little 10. Worked for bloody years.

Step forward Mr. Kevin Betsy - this is your time to shine.. You'd hope that our famed Individual Program Player Coach (or whatever his official longwinded title is) will have been working around the club to bring Celar up-to-speed, seeing as the striker role should be Betsy's specialist subject.

The fee was undisclosed, for the record!

But even if we paid millions, he's crap and pointless, and the OP has just highlighted he doesn't do any of the things a striker needs to.

Neither he and Madsen should be starters, but I don't suppose those who brought him to the club (Belk, Nourry and Marti, we're looking at you, though if it were a fight at school, we couldn't be sure who started it) will be held accountable. Even though we fans should be doing just that.

Other than Chair as a false 9, though, and he clearly isn't fully fit, I can't see who else can start.

We are all entitled to our opinions.

I would prefer Marti try something different so Scott Parker is saying 'I wasn't expecting that' rather than the same predictable stuff.

What are his options, though? The man looked haunted and half-resigned, post-Coventry. And his statement today on the Offish that he has 'full belief' in his players reads like a manager and club trying to feel better about itself, even if the usual suspects may ask what I expect him to say. If that were true, however, he wouldn't have (rightly) dropped Madsen, for instance. (And people often say the opposite of what they mean in my psychological experience - especially propagandists like soccer coaches.)

In the words of Basil Fawlty, it's hard to see beyond our team getting anything other than a damn good thrashing in Lancashire. We fluked the spawniest of all victories there under Ainsworth, but lighting can't strike twice - can it?

A gritty 0-0 would probably please us all immensely, but I don't see it happening.

I think you have to give him a go as the least bad option. He knows he’s got a chance now for a run of games and I can’t believe the coaches aren’t working with him to get him doing the right things.

My alternative would be Smyth. He has at least played up front before and would do the pressing bit better than most. You’d expect Burnley to play a high line.

Just been looking at the Development Squad to actually remind myself of the strikers we have on our books. I'd forgotten about a young CF we'd signed from Burnley in the summer called Rohan Vaughan. Has anyone seen him play for the Dev Squad or know how he's getting on? He looks like a big lad.
