FIFA World Cup thread. 12:02 - Nov 15 with 136473 views | Snipper | I’m trying to get excited about this World Cup, but to no avail :-((. I’ve just watched Sky Sports World Cup preview with Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher & Karen Carney. Utterly depressing viewing. Same old, same old. Picking players for the starting XI not playing for their clubs, or totally off form. I’m hoping this thread can get the juices flowing. Do any of you think England have a chance?

FIFA World Cup thread. on 11:44 - Nov 30 by PinnerPaul | For all the talking up, Wales were simply awful in all 3 matches. 1 goal, a pen and their 'legends' clearly not fit/any good anymore. As for comms etc, its all subjective. I can just about put up with most except Jonathan Pearce who really grates with me. |
They really were shockingly bad. Who would have thought a manager binned by Northampton and Port Vale would come up short in a World Cup? The insistence that Ramsey had to play every bloody minute basically meant and already limited side was going at it with ten men.
FIFA World Cup thread. on 13:06 - Nov 30 with 2329 views | soops | I think I'd be angrier as a Wales fan with the first half more than the second. It's like they were playing for a 0-0 despite having to win. From the 'expert' comments at half time it was seen as a tremendous strategy to show a complete lack of ambition and then wait for Bale to have a free kick from 25 yards at some point to win the game.

I agree I thought Wales would come straight out the blocks and put us on the back foot like the USA. But they just sat deep and did nothing to come at us. It felt extremely comfortable and unless they pulled off some freak goal at 0-0 they weren't going to have more ambition. They say Bale was injured but realistically he has seemingly lost a great deal of his pace and not adapted to another playing style. Ramsey looked completely shot for them. I think the old guard there are finished and they have to concentrate on the young players and they have a few of those. I would be pretty angry if I was a Wales fan. I thought USA really should have beaten them, Iran deserved to beat them and they came out against us with singularly little ambition. A great achievement to make the WC but their performance in it really was a whimper.

FIFA World Cup thread. on 00:21 - Nov 30 by SydneyRs | Costa Rica are worse, don't let their fluke win v Japan deceive you. They are 25/1 to beat Germany... Also Tunisia, Australia and others are worse than Wales IMHO. US could beat Holland, who I don't think are that good. [Post edited 30 Nov 2022 0:23]

Yeah, Costa Rica are poor but I love plucky underdogs and respect a country which makes massive use of renewable energy and got rid of its army*. The other reason I like them is because they keep the pundits honest. They struggle to get away with the usual lazy cross referring to Premiership and Champions League players because, if I recall correctly, only one of their starting eleven last Sunday, Navas, plays in the Europe. I think the other ten all play in Costa Rica, which is incredible. * It's actually their Army Abolition Day tomorrow.

FIFA World Cup thread. on 13:45 - Nov 30 with 2239 views | Juzzie | It felt to me Wales knew they had no chance of progressing so decided to try and avoid losing to England. Great free kick for the first goal but the goalie should have been further to his left, might have had a chance to save it then. Felt he didn’t fully trust the wall so went slightly to his right to try and cover both sides which is not possible.
FIFA World Cup thread. on 13:48 - Nov 30 with 2225 views | PlanetHonneywood | For all their pre- and by the sound of it, actual tournament noise, the Welsh were woeful. The US really should have had all three points, and as for 'it's only Iran' well enough said. I agree with the poster about the Yanks doing the Dutch. Senegal won't be easy, but if we see Sterling and Mount in the starting XI we'll be making it harder for ourselves. Kane looks a little off the pace too.

There's self delusion and there's Welsh self delusion. They certainly are world class when it comes to that.Days prior to the game BBC Wales had reporters going into schools geeing up the kids with tales of derring do and hysterically patriotic jumping around.God knows what psychological effect this had had on the poor little mites. But then it's in the DNA I suppose(or maybe DNQ of course)

To be fair they did go into English schools too,or least they did on bbc breakfast yesterday. What I can’t understand though is why have the virtually dead rubber of France v Tunisia on bbc1 and a game that means something to both teams on the red button?

I've been 'lucky' enough to have watched most of this tournament as I'm currently on gardening leave. Anyway Senegal have looked pretty bl00dy good to me so far, very quick and VERY physical, think we're up against it a bit personally and would have preferred the orange blokes. And let's face it Aldershot Town would have given Wales a good game last night, they were dire all round.

That nonsense speech from the actor Michael Sheen to a sea of confused Welsh footballers before they departed for Qatar looks to have been wasted.

Nope, France are three goals ahead on GD. Looking bad for Brentford though. Fark me, could be Wales in the red shirts [Post edited 30 Nov 2022 16:41]

That is how I saw it. Wales content to draw 0-0. I think they knew if they attacked us our better players like Foden would have picked them off on the counter. Once USA went ahead it meant they had to beat England 4-0 which was never going to happen. They probably felt Iran would not turn it round so no point going gung ho. Very subdued in North Wales today...
FIFA World Cup thread. on 19:40 - Nov 30 with 1695 views | DWQPR | If anybody thinks that VAR is fair then check the decision that has given Argentina a penalty. Totally bent decision. And the angles provided do not show that the Polish keeper actually touched the ball first before his hand glanced Messi’s head. Thankfully justice was done with a Messi missing the penalty.
