First of all, apologies on two counts: I was a bit pressed for time last night and so having arrived late I missed the start, but more importantly, was then in the "standing room only" at the back so I was pretty much unable to hear most of the questions that were put, and so I hope those who were better positioned will add to this thread with the Q&A's i'm not best placed to do

I asked three questions, here's a summary, and i very much paraphrase the answers:

Q: Does the club have the services of a specialist fitness coach, and if not, would it be worth employing one? (I should add that I initially referred to a "training coach" which caused some confusion in the panel until clarified)

A: Not unexpectedly, this was taken as perhaps a criticism of the players fitness, until CD intervened to add to KH's initially defensive reaction, reinforcing how fit he believed the squad were. (I then added it wasn't a criticism but a matter of interest, since other clubs employ a specialist). The mood changed after that, and it turns out we have a guy called Kevin Gibbons who oversees this area, and reference was made to GPS tracking and individual performance analysis, although KH said he thought maybe sports scientists had too much influence these days.

I was fine with that - it clarified where we stood and at least we now have a name (I'd never heard of Kevin Gibbons)

Q: There are huge posters around the town, advertising that "We're Ready" - I asked, So are We Ready? (I also added congratulations to the club for the vastly improved marketing)

A: After a bit of "what does Ready mean" KH settled into a fairly basic answer about preparations so i prompted him further by asking if he remained as excited by the start of a new season as ever. This is where things really took off (it'd been like a funeral up to this point) as he told us how he only got excited about two things - football and... it depended what was happening later that night! I added i hoped he'd got those two in the right order...
By this point, KH was getting into his stride

With plenty of other Qs & As in between these, my final question:

Q: Did his time managing Barnsley in the championship have any influence on how he went about managing Dale?

A: This is where it got interesting. First, KH referred to how he felt let down by unfulfilled promises made to him at Barnsley, and how during the course of a season things can become difficult, leaving him feeling a bit isolated. He was quick to point out how having RG at the club (RG was sat next to him) helped as someone he'd come to trust as a friend "who didn't want his job".

I followed up with "so if we went up, could he keep us up" and for me the best thing was how he went on to describe that he'd obviously be trying to do that but if not how we'd have to have a "managed relegation" to prevent freefall and stabilise to have another shot at it, quoting examples of clubs who were becoming adept at this such as Burnley in the premier league.

This was real insight into his thinking, imo, and perhaps an indication that he is prepared for the long haul at Dale. The aspect of planning for the championship/L1 added to his feeling of having exactly the right team, and board, around him which he emphasised was so very important to him

That's about the gist of what i was able to hear; as i said, please add to this if you were able to catch the other questions, of which there were plenty. Finally, thanks to the club for their time yesterday evening, plus the buffet!

Thanks for the feedback DA. Interesting questions and responses. Good to see KH still has his sense of humour and the feeling I got from your report was that he was more likely to open up to questions from genuine fans, genuinely interested in our fate, than a reporter going through the motions asking questions.

Hope others will add to this thread with similar feedback.

I got the Matt Done question in early doors. Matt Done is still a Sheffield United player but if he was to become available he would be a player we'd be interested in. Reading between the lines, that indicated to me that we'd be waiting for Done to be mutually let go from his contract which would coincide with the rumour that he's waiting to get a severance pay from Sheffield United but he straight batted the answer well.

I also asked about Jack Redshaw and whether we had offered him a contract and if we had, how disappointed was he that, having taken him to Tenerife, he's chosen to ply his trade in non-league. He said we didn't offer him a deal but we spoke to him and couldn't offer him a first team place on and he had to take Salford's offer for his own benefit.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

Hill also said he was after a goalkeeper after admitting he was light in that area because of Brendan Moore's injury and wants a loan goalkeeper in but Premiership clubs are have too many conditions regarding loans in that they want them to have guaranteed starting time otherwise they would penalize us which isn't how Hill wants to work. He wants players coming in to earn their place and he often looks to senior players to see when players are ready for the first team.

Defensively he's well stocked. We've got Kgosi and Bunney for left back, we've got left footed centre halves in Jim and Canavan, right footers in McGahey, Keane, and Brown with Rafferty, Cannon and Brown who can play at right full back. Answered very simply when asked if he wanted another centre half with a "No".

Thanks Chaff. More good questions and interesting responses. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels a little queasy at the response to the last one. I hope that feeling has cleared up before the season comes to an end and KH is proved right (again).

Given that he had already named 2 left sided CH and 3 right footed, maybe it is just a case of not wanting to sound like he doesn't fancy them. It wouldn't do their confidence any good and I think we would need to move one on if we were to sign an additional CH.

I think a good option would be to have Keane holding mid with Camps and Allen ahead of him in and then 2 of the other 4 CH. It would give more freedom to CC and JA and if we are under the cosh Keane can drop back into a back 3 for a spell, and let our FBs get forward on the counter.

Or maybe I've just played too much football manager

Rathbone added some much needed energy to the midfield last season, as can Cannon.

I'd actually like to see Camps and Rathbone in front of Keane.

Nice updates here. Cheers.

Good to see the questions that should have been asked before now, being asked - and being answered.

Quite possibly more good news on the way, too.

Always enjoy the forums until the same fan with the bald head starts irritating the directors about whether or not the price of beer is good value.

Look mate, it's not the Regal Moon. The price you pay in and around the ground is similar to what you pay in a lot of the pubs in Rochdale and a lot less than most other football grounds.

For the love of god will you not ask the same question again next year. Thanks in advance.

Highlight of the night was Hill being asked about whether he was excited about the coming season to which he replied "There's two things in life that excited me, ones football & ones something else!"

Thanks for everybody's answers. Chaff's question about goalkeepers at least explains the strange situation we had with Joel Castro Pereira.

Anymore summaries of the night would be gladly appreciated!

Another comment i've just recalled from last night - KH said he was looking to put together squads that'd score 70+ goals in the league, and if we did that, we'd be there or thereabouts

We've got a midfield and attack to blast through that total, no problem!

That total will take into account that we know we're far from watertight at the back. The challenge is on for the present CH early on, if we are still seeing the same mistakes then look to the loan market in September.

Echo others in thanking those who have posted reviews of the evening. Some great questions.

On the kit front, there's nothing wrong with a template kit from a big name but it HAS to be chosen by fans. The club have illustrated more than once that they don't really understand what works, and if there are a limited amount of templates available we have to get it right. If the intention is to sell as many shirts as possible to supporters, involve them properly.

Can you look to the loan market in September? I thought under the new rules of 6 or 12 month loans only you had to do these deals within the window, but I might be wrong.

Oh yeah. Forgot that. Well they have up to and including the Bury game. 4 solid matches if they don't want their position to be under threat, if that isn't achievable there's a valid argument that we'd have to bring someone in.

If the back 4 or 5 chipped in with say 10/15 goals between them from corners etc, that would be another few points on the board but our corners generally were very disappointing last season,

Unfortunately our greatest threat at corners from our defensive line up is Canavan who seems like 2nd choice. Raff is capable of getting one or two and possibly Nthle is as well. Be great to get Bunney back and fit!

Very unreasonable.

So long as the Club are happy for many supporters to use other cheaper, selling better quality drinks establishments, then fair enough. Until they sell better quality and a better price they won't maximise the tremendous opportunities they have of ownership of all of the licensed premises they have .

Hilly has apologised to fans at the Fans Forum re Matt Done. The deal wasn't completed so he couldn't say anything more than he did, but he obviously recognises that some fans may not think he was being honest.

The first thing he said when talking about the deal. Nice touch.
