High Street Swansea 23:37 - Jul 16 with 4766 views | jack_lord | I drove down High Street for the first time in a good while and from the Train Station I have to say it really is making progress, Perhaps the council is starting to put its vision into reality. Not quite ready for a round of applause but I thought that road was dead and buried. | ![](/images/avatars/8962.gif) |

This is true. The Elysium is still in rack and ruin though. Interesting that EBO talks of a new arcade. Will it be a proper one like the type depictaed on the Elysium itself? Or will it be the usual exscuse of running a corridor in a building and trying to sell units that could never work. I am old old enough to remember Snell's arcade. The Germans missed that one but we let it deteriorate nevertheless before pulling the while shooting match down to build a draughty passage at the side of a monstrosity. | ![](/images/avatars/8905.gif) |

The question is whether the shops bring the people or the people bring the shops? It's the latter unfortunately. No Waitrose or John Lewis here for a reason sadly. | ![](/images/avatars/8799.gif) |

High Street Swansea on 10:31 - Jul 17 with 3154 views | whaleoilbeefhooked | Remember a few years back, working in the Elysium building. And at the time, spoke with the guy who owned it at the time, an electrician from Townhill ! I put an exclamation mark after Townhill, because I'm from Penlan, and I though at the time, that takes a lot of balls, and good for you fella. He said he bought it as an investment, due to all the council plans at the time, for the regeneration project, that was going to happen to Hight st. It' will be interesting to see what happens to it, as it's enormous inside, and the front facade is a real snapshot, of the old Swansea, and surely must be saved? I wonder what if the Townhill bloke still owns it? | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

There's a Waitrose in caldicot (hardly salubrious) right next door to an ASDA, so no reason Swansea couldn't support one. (Oh and 18 bottles at 7.99 with a further 5% off will keep me going until the next offer. Bargain) | ![](/images/avatars/9539.gif) |

I was in Swansea this morning and pleased to see some kind of card encouraging people to spend in Swansea and get 5 percent off. Not a major deal breaker for anyone but a small initiative that the Swansea buck doesn't find its way up the M4. I notice the number of beggars in Cardiff has exploded. | ![](/images/avatars/8962.gif) |

1st off the council should give a 5 year business rate exemption to any business opening up in the city centre secondly they should compulsory purchase the palace and pull that down to (listed building my backside it's been a dump for 20 years plus now) 3rdly they want to get more coppers on the beat up there and have a zero tolerance to anti social behaviour high st is improving but it's still a dive and it still needs tidying up on a side note the duke at the top of high st has a bad rep but is actually a good pub and well worth a pint if your passing on a match day | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

Keep The Duke and pull down the Palace!! Bloody good job you live in the Marina with shiny new bulidings. Unfortunately the character of any place is enhanced by its historic and iconic buildings. Rather than carry on the work of the Germans and City Planning Officers we should be preserving our buildings. The Palace, the Elysium, the Albert Hall and the Slip Bridge for starters. Some of the WAG money that is being pumped into Cardiff would be good to kick it off as well. | ![](/images/avatars/8905.gif) |

How is the character of Swansea enhanced by a falling down wreck of a building that has been derelict for years. Iconic building last time it was a tatty old gay bar for the years prior to being derelict ! at least people still use the duke and it is a community bar not some falling down eye sore | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

The answer of course is that it is not enhanced. It would be if the building was restored for use by the community though. Here is an idea. The Patti is finished as a live music venue and now hosts weddings only. Sin City is an old nightclub, a crap building and not fit for the purpose of live music. Pull that down and use the Palace for live gigs. Here is another. Pull the Potters Wheel down, another crap building which is coming down anyway I believe. Shift the pub to The Elysium. I am about to break into a rousing rendition of 'If I Ruled The World' ;-) | ![](/images/avatars/8905.gif) |

I'd love to see a revamped palace as a live music venue. sadly it looks beyond repair. God knows what kind of mould and such like is in there, but in principle I agree Anything would be better than the current state on the building. The Palace has had essential repairs done to it. I belive it is water tight now. Surprised about the Wig and Pen. I thought drinks were a bit pricey there and they have stopped all food I believe. I always thought the Elysium would have involved less travelling for most of the punters. The Wig being further away. | ![](/images/avatars/8905.gif) |
