According to a tweet on the official Glentoran twitter account he has died this morning. Dreadful news if true, trying to find further confirmation

Heart breaking news a giant of a man and a warrior from the end of an era when football was a mans game ,he put his body on the line so many times for us

cant belive my biggest memory of him as swindons keeper we all took the micky out of him telling him he wouldnt get no rest there and he took it all as it as ment in fun and as the game wore on he showed that even in goal he still had that fire and willl to win and we clapped each other at the end

lived a hard life but 48 is no age thoughts with his family

Listen to the band play!

Very sad news. A sound, dependable player, strong in tackle and fearless with the headers and a real character in his own right. Great memories of him.

RIP.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

Truly shocking news.

The 'L' word is often overused when discussing some former Rs players, but in Macca's case it's fully deserved. 400+ games over 16 years, Rangers most ever capped player and 100% commitment in every game.

Thanks for the memories Macca, RIP.

Terrible news. RIP big man.

The word legend is overused but entirely appropriate in this case.

Just got home to find this out. Very sad news, hardly believeable. watched him throughout the eighties and nineties and you could see he really cared. Never met him but know many who did and never heard a bad word said about him. True Rangers man. RIP

Just home from work to see this news. Shocked and very very saddened. We have lost one of our club's greatest.

RIP Macca.

What dreadful news God bless you Alan, we alway's seemed safe in your hands.

Words fail me.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Just pretty damn gutted by the news...

What a player he was, and there's no doubt in my mind that he was one of the greatest I've ever seen play in a Rangers shirt, and whom had a profound impact on me as a kid because he was such an imposing figure who led by example.

That man was QPR right to the core.

Macca was an absolute QPR legend and a true leader. I had hoped he could have worked with the club, but he went back to Ireland. Very sad day for him to go at only 48. It doesn't seem that long ago I was watching him lead the QPR team out at LR.

Who's Next?

Awful, tragic news.

I'm not a great one for grief over people I've never met socially, but Macca was my age, so to see him on the pitch made him a hero to me.

Part of the greatness of Macca wasn't that he was a legend - though he was - it was that he could have been you or me if we had the talent and the courage. Rangers through and through, a credit to the club and his country on and off the pitch, a real man in the true sense.

His life should have been so much longer, but he did so much with it.
