Poor things, clutching heroically to that outmoded and unloved music.Soon they'll be relegated to meeting in dark corners of shadowy pubs like Morris Dancers and the Welsh Language Association.
Whereas ROCK LIVES.It always has and it always shall.I think you'll find that somewhere in the Bible.

Why punk was so very necessary. ---------------------------------------
Exhibit One 1975: The edentate lank long-haired Mr Rick Wakeman of Brentford The Prog Rock King indulging his instrument in the most pompous, naff, pretentious fashion possible, wearing the least stylish clothes hitherto known to man.A noodling soporific overlong tedious indulgent embarassing mock-epic nightmare that wasn't danceable too and wouldn't be concomitant to pulling sexy interesting cool girls.
Exhibit Two 1977: A breath of fresh air.A thrilling dynamic quick thrash.Great technical mastery and proficiency -Genesis,Floyd,Zeppelin- ain't the biz no more, having an amateurish everyman go is all.Let's have 2min30 of thrash not the concept triple album opera zzzzz. Hello wake up or fook off you old hippy bustards,I'm so bored of the USA:

Awesome thread. Rock has never truly recovered from punk. The sleazy 80's was a bit more exciting for rock but then all it took was a couple of bands from Seattle to make everyone point and laugh and the backbone of rock crumbled again. In the meantime there are bands from every genre that are just getting on with it... Tell me that this song isn't the best driving music ever?

Punk was a con, right up there with Global Warming - and you lot fell for it. Don't want to buy a second hand Mondeo do you?
If you're referring to Mclaren's "Punk", he may have meant it as a money-spinning pseudo-movement but it was embraced by the youth, snatched away from Mclaren/Westwood et al and turned in to something very smart and very real indeed. From the many offshoots of punk came some incredible subgenres and cultures and to use the Sex Pistols' version of punk as the be-all is the opinion of someone that really doesn't know much about the movement.
Also, if you really want to get pedantic, the name Punk was coined by Mclaren an' that but the genre had started well before.

blobby - how can you not love this little ditty
It's all right Scotty,I just resented the way Punk was just a tool to destroy.I remember some idiot boasting how they got rid of Gentle Giant. All right,my stuff ain't everyone's cup of ganja but no one went out on an anti binge. The sister of Strangler's bass player works in our local Morrison's - haven't seen each other in years apparently.

i'm liking rock at the mo as well - going through a 70s revival in my music taste - got a bit of a thing for long haired rock gods - think i saw a good looking cellist with elo hiding under loads of hair on TOTP 77 today!
saw hugh cornwell on some sunday morning debate programme not long back looking really uncomfortable and with no socks on. think jean jacques is a black belt in something - all very respectable now

Oy Scotty, you like female vocalists.....and the main reason I gave up slide geetar, the open chord king Derek Trucks.
she sings like she's chewing baccy . a fan of the more operatic voice if they're female other than the odd one or two (tori amos, kate bush). more of a fan of the male voice if i'm honest

In the same week in 1979 I went to see The Jam at The Rainbow, Finsbury Park and The Scorpions at The Hammersmith ODEON. Love guitar music whatever shade.
