Ivan Jurić 09:54 - Dec 20 with 4233 viewsdirk_doone

He had one successful year as a manager, with Crotone in Serie B in 2015/16. Apart from that, his career has been nothing special. Let's hope that both he and we can repeat the 2015/16 season.

Probably he's cheap

You know exactly how this goes
Continued abject failure, nailed on relegation, his 6 months is up and bring in another coach for the championship
We really do never fkn learn that doing it in the cheap means only one thing

Yes, he would be as he knows he'd struggle to get another job in Serie A after his recent failure.

"On 18 September 2024, Jurić became the new head coach of Roma, following the sacking of Daniele De Rossi after earning just three points in the first four games of the season. Jurić failed to turn the team's fortunes and was regularly criticized for his management style and poor results; he was eventually dismissed on 10 November 2024, after a 2–3 home loss to Bologna that left Roma 20th in the Europa League table and only four points ahead of the relegation zone in Serie A."

To be fair, some of the other names we were linked with, could have been worse. The very fact that Roma appointed him in the first place suggests that he can't be a total no hoper. So, let's hope things work out for him here.

He got sacked after just 12 games W 4 D 3 L 5. Not that bad a record to be sacked tbh.

He sounds a bit of a nutter into heavy metal music 😂

The Danish fella Kasper Hjulmand was probably my pick of a bad bunch that were linked.

Saying that, if he had any sense & didn't want a dead cert relegation on his record, it would be no surprise at all if he declined the job. Who could blame him?

Whoever Sport Republic choose, you can be 95% sure it'll be the wrong choice. Terrible owners. Kept RM for far too long... and now they're desperately scouring Europe for someone - anyone - to take the reins.

Happy 2025 my arse.

RM would die for a record like his - and we wouldn't be in the relegation zone if we had that record.

Hardly inspiring, but what have we got to lose on a 6 month contract? Even God would have a tough job keeping us up now. He may not be a great coach but he can't be worse than RM. He seems to have done a decent job on low budgets, making clubs play above their level, so maybe there's something to him.

Kjetil Knutsen would have been my choice. He's someone who could have taken a club like ours, stuck with us for many years and given us the greatest spell in our history, as he's proved with his current club. BUT, he's turned down offers from bigger clubs than ours so we probably couldn't have got him here. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as Brighton's next manager though, as they've tried to get him in the past.

Jurić is a far less ambitious appointment. He has a record of avoiding relegation in Italy, which I guess is all SR were looking for. Anyway, I really hope it works out for him here.

Also, Dirk, I think you're missing his 2 successful seasons with Verona in Serie A. He did a good job keeping the relegation favourites up. He was then poached by Torino and did an OK job with them (3 seasons mid table) before an amicable separation and him joining his most recent club Roma (sacked after 12 games, won 4, drawn 3, lost 5).

I agree. My first post was a bit of a knee jerk reaction to the news. I've watched a lot of Serie A (on TV) in recent years and I quite liked his Torino team. We wouldn't have got an equivalent English manager of his calibre.

Three mid-table seasons with Torino.

That's the best Saints can hope for, If he can do that with us I'd happy.

Into heavy metal music, starts fist fights with board members and happy to have a pop at the players, fans and media.

No idea what he's like as a manager but at least he'll be a laugh as a character.

To be honest whoever we get we're going down, so long as he doesn't play god awful sideways and backwards football i'm happy enough to give the fella a chance.

This appointment tells us exactly where we are financially, we couldn't afford to pay any club compensation for nicking their manager.
Are we keeping some funds to buy players in January or do we just not have enough to pay compensation.
We'll find out in January transfer window.
I think we'll get rid of more than we'll bring in.

It was reported a while back that we couldn't afford to pay compensation for a manager currently in work so I guess SR looked at the pool of unemployed managers and decided that Jurić was the pick of the bunch.

On reflection, under the circumstances, we could have done a lot worse.

With regard to the Club's finances, I really hope they can wait longer before selling Dibling, as his value is only going to increase with time. Selling a player who might one day be worth £100 mill for £25 mill in January, would not be sensible unless the Club is desperate for any money they can get asap.

He plays an aggressive pressing style 3-4-2-1 line up which includes “tactical fouling “ which he describes as heavy metal football
Sounds like a total nutter so it could be fun while it lasts

Manager called Ivan, gulags round the ground, a red wall and flags that say red army.

What’s the odds any director of football has the nickname uncle Joe?

Maybe we should re-purpose the Red Flag for games?

Oh Ivan’s flag is deepest red
Soaked in the blood of influencer's dead

Football Martins flying high
We strung him up and watched him die

While Saint Rob shakes and hides in fear
We’ll keep football Martin hanging here!

I'm not sure what planet this Board are on?

This guy does not have the pedigree to turn our season around.

Does anyone know.
Does he speak English language.
I just can't handle trying to decipher what foreign managers are saying.

Nov 2017: Sacked
Oct 2018: Appointed Genoa manager
Dec 2018: Sacked

I’ve just asked the Croatian woman at work (whose English is so good that she used the word “perplexed” earlier) about this. She doesn’t like football but says it shouldn’t be a problem as Croatians are used to picking up other languages. Modric speaks a load of different languages and English is very widely spoken in Croatia, especially in the tourist areas. I’d be surprised if the language was a problem for this guy.

Just listened to an interview with an Italian football journo on Talksport. Said Juric was always really friendly and came across almost as if he could not believe he was given the Roma job. (didn't last long tbf).

Characterised his football as a lot of kicking the ball up in the air and pressing the opposition trying to deal with it into making mistakes. Said he will need a lot of very fit and willing players to make it work in the PL.

Sounds perfect for our bunch of asthmatic dwarfs...
