Ivan Jurić 09:54 - Dec 20 with 5214 viewsdirk_doone

He had one successful year as a manager, with Crotone in Serie B in 2015/16. Apart from that, his career has been nothing special. Let's hope that both he and we can repeat the 2015/16 season.

I’m usually more of a realist than a pessimist but you just know this is going to be a complete and utter car crash.

Come on Grumps.
We all wanted Martin out didn't we, we're not spoilt for choice because there are not many Managers / Coaches that would relish & accept this job.
It worries me that Juric was sacked after only 12 games with Roma, let's just hope he lasts a bit longer with us.
We know that we are down this season, Most of us just want to see an improvement & some football that we can enjoy, Martin never produced that.
Let's not tag him as "Ivan the Terrible" just yet.

You're right ,GRIM.
Just disappointed that we waited too long to get rid of Martin.
But I would like to know the owners thinking on this appointment.
I cant see anything on his CV that tells me he will be a success here.

Just listened to an interview with an Italian football journo on Talksport. Said Juric was always really friendly and came across almost as if he could not believe he was given the Roma job. (didn't last long tbf).

Characterised his football as a lot of kicking the ball up in the air and pressing the opposition trying to deal with it into making mistakes. Said he will need a lot of very fit and willing players to make it work in the PL.

Sounds perfect for our bunch of asthmatic dwarfs...

Haha quality!

Well Armstrong is good at pressing and Tall Paul could pick off the high balls...you never know. It would be nice to see the opposition making mistakes in their penalty area rather than us.
Anything is better than the dross we've endured.
As Nick says, it's key that he has an assistant that knows the PL to guide him.

Manager called Ivan, gulags round the ground, a red wall and flags that say red army.

What’s the odds any director of football has the nickname uncle Joe?

Maybe we should re-purpose the Red Flag for games?

Oh Ivan’s flag is deepest red
Soaked in the blood of influencer's dead

Football Martins flying high
We strung him up and watched him die

While Saint Rob shakes and hides in fear
We’ll keep football Martin hanging here!

I remember many were slagging off RM before he arrived and look what happened , he got us promoted. It’s the saints way.

We’re not in a position to demand really good proven managers we’re already down we’re not a big attraction at the moment

I’m actually quite relaxed about it all. Last season following saints around the country was very enjoyable so I’m not bothered about relegation. This new manager sounds a right nutter and I’m looking forward to it. Some of our players may have a new lease of life under him who knows.

His record wasn’t actually that bad with Roma P12 W 4 D 3 L 5 but he got the sack. Maybe he punched a few too many 😂.

Ivan Juric formation
It is clear from his lengthy spell at Torino, Juric typically lines up in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

This formation is slowly becoming more and more popular in the top flight of English football, with Manchester United's Ruben Amorim also preferring a back three setup.

Ideally for Juric, Southampton's interim manager for the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Liverpool, Simon Rusk, opted for a three at the back formation, meaning the players are already somewhat familiar with the idea.

Ivan Juric tactics and philosophy
The Croatian often opts for man-to-man marking, which requires his players to be aggressive and reactive in their duels.

When on the offense, Juric prioritises the use of his wing-backs, who he likes to offer width, taking up crossing positions.

While a 3-4-2-1 formation can often be regarded as setup that doesn't allow players to express themselves, this is not the case with Juric.

Not only does he give his wing-backs the license to exploit space on the wings, but he also likes the two attacking midfielders behind the centre forward to move freely, often interchanging with the striker.

Duvan Zapata was a key element in Juric's setup at Torino, as his ability to drop deep and take defenders out of the game left space in behind for other attacking outlets.

Saints fans were becoming understandably frustrated under Russell Martin, giving away unnecessary goals due to overplaying at the back.

Juric, however, won't stand for complacent errors, and will aim to ensure his team are compact and hard to beat, dissimilar to the Southampton team we have seen in recent months.

Who will play under Ivan Juric?
Despite Southampton's league position suggesting otherwise, Juric has an array of talent at his disposal who, under the right man, could be taken to the next level.

A player who could have a huge role in Juric's team is Kyle Walker-Peters. The attacking minded full-back could be an effective outlet on either side, possessing the pace to really hurt the opposition. Yukinari Sugawara could partner Walker-Peters on the opposite flank.

For a short period, Flynn Downes was talked up to be Declan Rice's replacement at West Ham. Instead, Southampton now have his services, and the energetic, hard working midfielder could thrive in a more compact setup.

A player who would likely thrive under any manager is Tyler Dibling.

Dibling has enjoyed his breakthrough season at the Saints, playing the majoirty of his minutes from right wing. He does, however, have the ability to play in a more central role and could be deployed as one of the two attacking midfielders behind the striker.

Juric could have the opportunity to strengthen in the January transfer window but, for now, this is how Southampton could line up under Juric.

Possible strongest Southampton starting XI under Ivan Juric (3-4-2-1): Ramsdale, Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Stephens, Sugawara, Walker-Peters, Downes, Ugochukwu, Dibling, Fernandes, Archer.

Interesting times ahead.

Nah, don’t want negativity.
This guy gives the Saints an opportunity that didn’t exist if we stayed with Martin.
In addition he might even put the players in their best positions!

If Juric prefers Stephen's as one of his Ctr Backs then he'll immediately go down in my estimation.
Stephen's like Martin should be history.
A strong coach should be able to manage difficult players so I would like to see if he can get a tune out of ABK not Stephen's.

Very happy with this appointment. The players have long been treated as buddies with Russell Martin in charge. Juric looks like a nutter; but he is a manager, not a friend, who seemingly takes no prisoners. Get them working and see what happens.

Maybe he could get a Roma player here on loan until the end of the season.

Jurić had some top class players at Roma: Dybala, Cristante, Ndicka, Koné, Pellegrini, Saelemakers, Dovbyk and El Sharaawy. At the beginning of this season Roma were ranked by UEFA as the 5th best team in Europe, just behind Liverpool. He's going to have a bit of a shock when he sees the level of our squad.

UEFA club coefficient ranking

As of 29 August 2024
Rank Club Points
3 Bayern Munich 114.000
4 Liverpool 102.000
5 Roma 93.000
6 Paris Saint-Germain 91.000

Five possibly good things about the new appointment.

1. With Heavy Metal Thunder Ivan we'll at least threaten the oppo, and their penalty area, instead of mincing around our own penalty area (fingers crossed).

2. He's only got an 18 month contract - halle - flipping - lujah - perhaps SR have learnt something ( fingers crossed over crossed fingers - I am a long , long way from being convinced by any of this!).

3. He's never been near Swansea, Milton Keynes or Leipzig in his life ( not 100% about that one actually).

4. The Circus never ends.

5. Good night.

I'm not sure what planet this Board are on?

This guy does not have the pedigree to turn our season around.

Does anyone have the 'pedigree' to turn this season around ? The damage has been done. It is a big and probably unrealistic expectation that we can survive this season.

We need to give him a chance, before writing him off.

Agree with this 100%
My initial response was disappointment but to be realistic it’s very difficult to see us staying up.
I have no idea how Ivan will fare, but we should support his effort to do so.

There is always going to be a bit of cynicism after what's happened with our managers in recent years, but this time I feel more optimistic than I did when the last 2 were appointed.

I'm sure Jurić will get a great welcome from our fans.

I lie the idea of a firey and passionate man being our manager. It is bloody good for morale. If he trains them hard, he could have a team next season that could go up and stay up and by then all parties would want him to stay.

Not sure he'll be here next season to get us out of Championship.
He has a break clause in the contract which allows him to leave at end of season or for us to sack him at end of season.
He's guaranteed 2 Yr contract if in the very unlikely event that he keeps us up.
He'll deserve more than that if he keeps us up, perhaps the "Freedom of the City" .
