Cricket tour v SA 12:00 - Dec 18 with 30081 viewsD_Alien

Jimmy Anderson back in action since breaking down in August, and taking a wicket in the first warm-up game

Looking forward to this tour, as the team looks to establish a new sense of purpose in the test arena. Ben Stokes had a great tour last time, and should be feeling in good fettle

Incidentally, batting for the SA XI, Matthew Arnold. I wondered what he'd been up to after writing Dover Beach

Sadly, our other man Parkinson has been tonked all over the park in the first invitational game. Hopefully it doesn't damage his confidence too much.

Great restart for Jimmy Anderson, first ball wicket

England go with no front-line spinner, but on a track not usually helpful to them

Few Bury flags in the crowd. Keeping an eye out to see if there's a Colne Dynamoes one too.

This new world championship adds a bit more to the series too. Every game is worth something even after the series is decided. Looks like India will get one of the 2 final places so we need to get something from this after only sharing the points against the Aussies

I think Root is going to get some stick for winning the toss and putting them in to bat first. Only listening but it seems that the ball is doing a lot more than yesterday for some of their bowlers than it did for ours. Time for Archer to step up assuming our last 2 wickets fall for not many

It was a fair assumption

I'm not sure (in fact, i'm definite) that Root doesn't know how to handle Archer

My earlier assumption that "England had one more collapse in them this decade" may prove to have been premature too...

England require 376 to win

With the illnesses factored in could be all but over by close of play today

251 to win tomorrow with 9 wickets left. Much better than I expected and at least a sniff of a chance

Yes. Much depends on fitness to bat by those indisposed, although if they can at least make it into the middle, playing within themselves might actually help

And continues with Bairstow, a flash outside off to the second delivery with the new ball, easily left alone

What goes through these players minds? Apart from flies?

What an absolutely dismal finish. Complete rethink needed for the second test, including the bowling attack. I’m not having it that you can’t leave out any of the seamers.

At least on the batting front Pope should be well by then.

Pope for Bairstow must happen if Pope is fit.

Yet another failure by our so called best batsman, Root. When was the last time he scored a match winning significant score, ie score big when it really counted?

Another pathetic performance, overall, especially our batting.

He's a walking wicket at the moment. Needs some innings at county level to get some confidence back. Getting thrown into the test team at this stage isn't going to help the team or him

Cue 100 next game !!!

So Burns gets injured playing football and Archer out injured too

Bairstow thankfully replaced by Pope. Bess selected instead or Parkinson

Win the toss and bat and immediately lose a wicket ( 8-1)
