Cricket tour v SA 12:00 - Dec 18 with 30090 viewsD_Alien

Jimmy Anderson back in action since breaking down in August, and taking a wicket in the first warm-up game

Looking forward to this tour, as the team looks to establish a new sense of purpose in the test arena. Ben Stokes had a great tour last time, and should be feeling in good fettle

Incidentally, batting for the SA XI, Matthew Arnold. I wondered what he'd been up to after writing Dover Beach

Anderson struggling with a side strain? Is age catching up with him?

Looks like a draw now with less than 30 overs left

All over, brilliant test match

Superb innings by Dom Sibley, but think Stokes has edged MoM for his all-round performance: record number of catches, 47 & 72 (the latter allowing an early declaration which has probably made all the difference) and finally, blasting the tail out

Broad has just said that Stokes brilliantly quick 72 yesterday has won them the time to bowl out the South Africans today. Although its runs they didn't need in the end you always want that security - and obviously it gave England the opportunity to put every fielder around the batsman and apply that all important pressure.

Stokes has basically saved us half a day with that rapid 72.

Another 40 runs and I reckon we will have a winning total with more time to go at South Africa to grab the required 10 wickets.

This was the match-turning point for me. Vital.

It's time for four day test matches apparently.

As ace as the World Cup was last summer, and I'm not averse to T20s either*, there's nothing that can compete with a good five-day Test like that.

*The jury's still very much out on The Hundred.

Other than that tyke in charge of English cricket and his marketing men believe those who don’t like cricket don’t have the attention span to watch it and so they create something they think they do have the attention span for, provided it’s accompanied by dancing girls lots of beer and fireworks but is nothing like cricket.

When the novelty of the hundred runs out no doubt we will invent the 50 and the the ten.

Excellent morning from England, and SA starting to look demoralised in the field which could well make a difference when they come to bat, hopefully with England past 500

Watching Stokes and Pope is a joy. I'm scared to say anymore for fear of jinxing it.

426-8 at tea, tons for Stokes and now Pope

Maharaj looks to be getting something from the pitch already, it'll be a tough match for SA from here

This is insane. We now have Mark Wood playing like AB deVilliers in a T20 match. Incredible.

He was on course for the fastest half century for England (28 balls)

Shame they couldn't get that extra run for the 500, but you'd take that total every time

Absolutely. It would be ace if we can bowl them out twice without having to bat again.

Seems some people are in meltdown over declaring at 499. Apparently we have lost the psychological advantage by not going for 1 more run!!!
