On a beautiful summer's evening, watching QPR in the cup...would be well down my list. Still admire them though.

Well, it's very disappointing but last season, we won three games, beating Everton on the way, and went out on penalties in the fourth round.

If we always lose at Charlton it is hardly surprising we lose at other London grounds like Fulham and Brentford.

Ted, how do you rate our chances against Reading in the League Cup last place play-off? [Post edited 10 Aug 2022 13:38]

Charlton match thread. on 22:30 - Aug 9 with 2129 views | Greenbay | FT REPORT - Carabao Cup R1 Charlton 1 QPR 1 Charlton win 5-3 on penalties - This had penalties written all over it. A very poor QPR performance although there were some positive highlights for us. So let's get the bad news out of the way. With seconds just left of the 90 minutes - Charlton's 18 year old Aaron Henry hit a stunning equaliser from the edge of the box. This was in reply to our sub Tyler Roberts, on loan from Leeds, making his debut - and delivering a cracking goal 10 minutes from time. And that goal did seem enough for us to limp into round 2. But no - Henry changed all that. And with Jojo missing the first penalty - Charlton were unblemished hitting 5 in a row. - Ok we're out of the EFL Cup but what did we learn? For us to finish in the Championship top 10 - our squad it seems is not strong enough although we do have some injuries. I hate scolding our players but it does appear that Hamaleinen, Dozzell, Thomas and possibly 'Mr Offside' Bonne are just not good enough for a top half Championship team. Many on this board and on this thread have taken the same view. And let's be honest - we've known this for a long time. I'm sure they're all nice lads, work hard, do their best - but not everyone is international standard, or Premiership standard or even Championship standard. Indeed to play at Championship level is brilliant in itself. To have worked your way up the ranks from thousands upon thousands of kids is quite something. To be a professional footballer is quite something. So let's not be harsh on them. Congratulate them for doing so well. But surely as fans we do hope for more. And let's face it you can't fault the owners. They put in a million and a half a month and at the same time are producing a new training ground. That's ambition. But this is a very long process. I almost believe that MB used the match as an experiment against a League 1 side which was also not at full strength. So who is good enough to take us forward having dealt with who are not. And I hope - the who are nots - all prove me wrong as I'm sure we all agree. So I - hopefully we - were impressed by 19 year old sub Sinclair Armstrong. He produced pace, strength, and a great attitude despite his years. My word is he powerful. And Roberts - a good debut - certainly a class above some of our other players; good dribbling skills, and also pace and awareness. So that's two plusses. And what surprised me was Mide Shodipo - admittedly against a League 1 outfit - but perhaps there is something there. A great shot just before the penalty shoot-out - curled just outside the post - which would have won it for us. As for Chair - still a class act - he's only half the player - without Willock. Disappointment - yes - big time when we lose to a team a division below us. But we did learn a few things. That we do have players of top half Championship quality and perhaps at the lower ends of the Premiership. And with our support - those amazing fans at Charlton who must have made up almost half of the official 5629 crowd - you never know where we may end up in this year's Championship. It's top 10 for me and some glory at Sunderland on Saturday.

Maybe ask me after the Hull game Tuesday 30th August, eight games gone by then so should have a better/clearer picture of how things are working out. The smallest of comfort crumbs but the fake complete and utter bastards managed to lose at home to Stevenage. Which Is nice.

Charlton match thread. on 21:59 - Aug 9 by stainrods_elbow | My sentiments exactly, and I suspect many on here. If Beale says anything else post-match, he'll be insulting our intelligence. Stef's pathetic, defeatist pen and Dieng's antics on the goal line - grinning, shouting and jumping about like an idiot - left a bad taste in my mouth too, and, though we didn't deserve to lose a piss-poor game, we definitely deserved to lose the shoot-out, and managed to clutch defeat (or rather Dieng managed not to clutch it) from the jaws of a deeply tedious victory. The only saving grace is that we now know Bonne, Dozzell, Hamalainen and probably Shodipo (notwithstading that late shot) shouldn't even be subs if Beale is serious about building a competitive, credible squad. Send Bonne back to Ipswich, Shodipo on loan to anyone who'll take him, and offer Hamalainen terms. Dozzell is so lacklustre I can't even be bothered to think of a fate for him. it makes my blood boil thinking of how that lot on the payroll probably make it even harder in the mind of Hoos to hold onto Willock. The performance of Chair tonight was also dismal, and he needs to have a long word with himself in the mirror. If he can't or won't impose himself on League One opposition, he's going nowhere fast. Only Dickie and to a lesser extent Dunne come out with any credit tonight. One positive takeaway: Armstrong is raw, but has real potential. I really hope he'll challenge Dykes for that no 9 shirt (or whatever he's wearing), who needs challenging. Otherwise, Roberts' good goal aside, I feel like I've just been beaten unconscious with a feather duster. [Post edited 9 Aug 2022 22:03]

Not a lot there to argue with apart from I think adding Field to the list of players who played well tonight and to add Thomas to those we need to move out.

Charlton match thread. on 22:55 - Aug 9 with 1852 views | Logman | Not that bothered with tonight. 46 games is more than enough for our tiny squad and, as we saw last season, we didn't have the squad to last so we are not really equipped to go far in the Cups. Hopefully the Board can stretch to a full-back, striker and maybe a defensive midfielder-cum-full back. I'm very worried that there is not too much beyond the first 12 or 13 when injuries and suspensions kick in.
Charlton match thread. on 23:02 - Aug 9 with 1774 views | joe90 | Last night was my first game of the season. It felt odd that it was an away game and even more so that it was a League Cup game as they have pre-season feel. Support was fantastic. Good turnout and in fine voice all night. Had a bit more time to digest last nights events and had a few thoughts... 1: Bonne didn't get the service he needed. He was isolated up front and was never going to have an impact especially with how Chair was playing. 2: Shodipo/Roberts/Armstrong changed the game. Our shape was much better and we looked dangerous going forward. 3: Niko and Ozzy just don't seem to cut it at this level. Both look very fit, but technically not up to scratch. I'd say Ozzy has more potential, but at what point do you give up on a player? 4: Roberts looked good and will definitely add significant depth to our front line. 5: Injuries will be an issue this season. It's early days and we haven't found our strongest line up. It's going to be a strange season what with the early start/Christmas break, new manager and players coming in and out of the team due to inevitable injuries. I think we'll need to be patient. Don't be so ungracious. It was an absolute world class strike from a kid making his debut. Something he will remember for the rest of his life. Yes it should have been cleared earlier, but once it came out to him, he didn't hesitate, just hammered it into the top corner. If Sinclair did that, we would be raving about it for weeks

Charlton match thread. on 08:39 - Aug 10 with 1147 views | derbyhoop | A poor quality match, lit up by 2 superb strikes. In the preview, Clive asked "what have we got in reserve?". Now, we know. It's inconsistency. The players who came in - Nico, Thomas, Dozzell, Bonne, Shodipo all seemed to have things they did well, followed 2 minutes later with something awful.

Charlton match thread. on 11:02 - Aug 10 with 1013 views | 89_50 | Last night would have been a bit of a reality check for everyone. We all know Hammalainen isn't the required standard, but yesterday was very concerning how he's reached this level. Decision-making was poor, anticipation awful, passing as bad - I felt bad for Sam Field having to mop up after him all the time. Kakay is a squad option at best. Undoubtedly now. Circumstance dictates that he will be playing frequently, and while I really like him, he's simply not this level. It looked like it reached a point where Dieng and Dickie didn't have confidence passing to him, so were electing to go elsewhere for an out-ball. Dozzell's languid style comes across as almost lackadaisical, but yesterday didn't do him favours. He almost looked disinterested. Thomas tried, but either ran into a blind alley, or forced himself into mistakes. There were positives though. Roberts was excellent when he came on. Level of opposition may have given him space to roam, but he was so much calmer and confident on the ball than anyone around him. He looked like a PL/Upper Champ player, and it's encouraging that he can give us creative options. Armstrong was pure enthusiasm and chaos. Loved his cameo. He's clearly very raw, but you can't fault his work ethic and effort to chase and harry. I don't think he's ready to chuck in to start yet, and it looked like Beale was having to coach him on where to stand and move as the game progressed (I remember reading that there was a fair amount of this in the U23s). Shodipo was also pure effort, trying to make things happen, but everything felt a little rushed with him. Still think there's a good squad option there, to purely run at people. Field did the job of at least two men, and I think he'll grow into captaincy more and more.

"Stef's pathetic, defeatist pen". He placed it down the middle but flukily, the 'keeper pushed it onto the bar with his feet. Would you make it a disciplinary offence for players to do anything other than blast a penalty?
