I can’t believe we have people in this island supporting the rights to bear arms in a general public. Nobody should love a gun. My son in law is an AFO. He does it love his Arsenal in the car nor that which he wears, It’s a job to him. No love of weapons Americans love their guns and have a deadly fascination with them. This is killing their kids, literally.

It's not about supporting right to bear arms. It's facing the realisation that there isn't anything legislative wise that can stop the issue now. It has to be more nuanced than saying ''get rid''. Some have the capacity to look at things realistically, others do not and insist on looking at things emotionally. If someone can come forward on this thread and explain why a certain legislation will recoup 400 million guns and stop criminals getting hold of them, then we can all discuss it. Until that time it's just noise.

I'll make a start and others can feel free to add as they feel appropriate. 1) Ban on and buyback of assault (military style) weapons 2) Background checks to include criminal background and mental health checks 3) Police visits to homes of gun owners to ensure gun storage is safe appropriate. 4) Funding for police to support the removal of illegally held guns.

You often see pictures of military personnel with their weapons, posing in a group. it's understandable as comrades who have each others backs, they form a bond and their gun is their best friend in that situation. When you see pictures of civilians with their big guns and even worse, their trophy kills, it makes me sick. When I turned on the news and saw this story it was utter revulsion, I looked at my own son and couldn't imagine the horror, nor did I really want to. It's the culture in America and it needs changing, any British person who thinks guns on general sale like alcohol and fags, is a screaming idiot. The good people with the guns were there and they didn't stop 19 children of 10 years or younger being murdered, they didn't do anything for 40 minutes or more. That theory has been shown up for the pile of excrement it always was.

Thanks, now we have something to discuss. 1) Agreed, but 99% of killings in America are not as a result of assault style mass shootings 2) Background checks do check if someone has a criminal record. Of course this incident the person would have passed both your proposed checks. 3) The police cannot feasibly check the storage of 400 million firearms, but even if they did, safe storage doesn't really mean anything with regards to who commits crimes. 4) How do you propose they do this? Also how do you propose they know someone holds an illegal gun. Disagree with any of those points?

1) I care about innocent bystanders and this should be and easy 'win' 2) This one, but what about the one in Buffalo? 3) It could be done as long term goal with a staged approach. Every new weapon bought subject to this check. As for the second bit, poor storage means easy access for those wanting them for nefarious. It also has the added bonus of reducing accidents when little hands get on them. 4) Same approach as drugs. I'm not saying it will be 100% successful but that's not a reason not to try. The list isn't exhaustive but could go some way to a change of culture. What's the alternative? Accept child murder? More guns?

1) For sure, but it's not addressing the problem. 99% of homicides would still happen and there is nothing to say that 1% wouldn't just switch to non assault weapons - it seems logical to suggest they would. 2) He was held for a mental evaluation, but don't think he was diagnosed with anything. So yes I assume he would pass too. But don't quote me on that. 3) 400 million mind? That's more than the entire population of America. It's not feasible, it really isn't. Think how many man hours that would take. 4) It wouldn't be at all successful, just like drugs isn't. Take one gun off the street they get their hands on another. Again, trying is fine but we are looking for solutions not just lip service and token attempts. It's asking the impossible, you cannot tell anyone has an illegal gun. With drugs there is usually some sort of trail. I don't think there is an alternative. Not sure its accurate to say ''accept'' more murder, we don't really have a choice. Do we?

1) Removal of assault weapons would save innocent bistanders - you don't get as many with a handgun 2) Depends on what midical records were put into statute - needing a mental health evaluation could out a pause on it? 3) Starting from new purchases could work - if folks wanted it to. 4) Should we have no laws then? If you can't 100% eradicate all crime then stop trying? (we've done this one on prisons). We won't know what's successful if we (they) don't try. If you don't try, you accept it.

1) Innocent bystanders are all recorded in the 1%. Again we are looking to solve the gun issue here, that doesn't do so. Do we know how many innocent bystanders are killed by automatic weapons? Would barely register I wouldn't have thought, maybe 0.001%. Worth doing of course, but doesn't solve what we are talking about. 2) For how long? Aren't you just delaying the inevitable? Wouldn't this man just wait until his wait time is up? Again we aren't addressing the issue here are we. 3) But then you have 400 million unchecked weapons, the exact same situation as we stand here today. It doesn't solve anything. People would also buy privately with no record of purchase. 4) Of course we need laws, but some are more effective than others and easier to enforce. Drugs for example they are legalised in a lot of states as it is impossible to tackle. Weapons is even harder. You can have a law by all means, but we are looking at ways to solve an issue not just look like we are. I disagree regarding your view of accepting it, putting something in place that is completely unfeasible is just as accepting as someone who knows its unfeasible. For example; if we were concerned about plane crashes and I make a suggestion to put a swimming pool rubber ring on the bottom of them to cushion the crash, nothing changes in reality does it? My suggestion doesn't mean I'm any more or less accepting than the person who obviously says ''that's a stupid idea''. Not a single idea there tackles the 400 million guns in the country. It may make you feel better for suggesting things, but the reality is your suggestions won't solve anything regarding this issue. Nothing.

But they can’t do any of those things without it being deemed “unconstitutional”. Their veneration for a document that is nearly four centuries old (they also hero worship Magna Carta too) is a complete anachronism in the modern world. It would be like us still allowing the shooting of Welsh men within the walls of Chester with a crossbow because it was necessary in the 12th century.

Even if they did, it wouldn't solve anything. For the reasons stated. 200 years ago maybe, today it would be fruitless.

So you think they can be done? Explain how. We both know you are talking nonsense hence why you are running away. Give me a proposal and explain why it will work or stop trolling. That goes for anyone else running around in circles not having a clue what they are talking about. I'm listening, make it good.

I have every right to be sanctimonious, some of the comments on here are ludicrous. Blaming people for this tragedy when they don't have the balls to even state what it is they are proposing. If you have an opinion that something needs to be done then tell us what. No point in saying ''something'' needs to be done and having a go at a nation for not doing it. Doing what?
