No doubt hundreds and maybe thousands of more examples of people defending their lives and homes against armed criminals with a responsibly owned weapon.

Where did you hear there is unrestricted access to high velocity weapons?
All licensed gun dealers have to do background checks by law. Makes up for 80% of the gun sales in the country. There is then the illegal and second hand private sales of guns which of course won’t do a background check, just as a drug dealer won’t ask for ID and bank statements to check you are a responsible and financially stable adult.
I don’t believe the argument is “they want to take our guns!”. The argument is that if they do put a ban on guns they will only be taking them out of the hands of the people that don’t cause the issues.

I’ve never said ban them. Having said that, somewhat of a ban did work in Australia.
Regulating them would be a start.

So more guns then?
How many will solve the issue?

I'm definitely sure that an 18 year old boy living in a fairly quiet town didn't need an AR-15 with an extra large capacity magazine.
Why does any ordinary citizen need military grade firearms?
I've heard all the reason and excuses, none of them make any sense. In 2020 there were over 45000 firearm related deaths in the USA, the police can't stop them, the good guy with a gun never seems to be there either.
They do not.
It’s not just guns but what type, how powerful ,how bluddy macho.
It is not a case of owning one to shoot a bear on your lawn in Boise,Idaho.
We re talking of military hardware in a downtown crap hole

I spent some time in Massachusetts some time ago. I was going to a friends house with my wife for dinner so popped in to a massive supermarket to get a bottle or two of wine.
When I asked a shop assistant where in the shop they were he looked at me like I was a social pariah and told me that I could only buy wine from a liquor store and not a supermarket.
They did, however, sell all manner of weapons and ammunition. I could have bought a gun but not a bottle of zinfandel.
I love visiting the States but I would never want to live there. We have societal problems but theirs are considerably worse. Give me the UK any day,
Mass shootings will continue to happen, usually with legally bought military grade weapons that nobody outside the military needs. Nothing will change.

I know a fair few Americans and all have guns. All are law abiding decent people. Most will never surrender their guns. One I know says he’ll surrender his guns when the USA government gives up their guns.

I don’t know what you mean by “more”?
That sounds like a left wing talking point as opposed to responding to anything I have said. I never mentioned the rate of production, didn’t even hint at it.
I was responding to someone who said he hates the notion that the people with good intentions that own guns can protect themselves against the bad guys with guns - presumably because he thinks it doesn’t happen.
I have him examples, and there are countless of them which show exactly that. I didn’t even scratch the surface.
Should I move there for work purposes I would certainly be considering getting my licence to have one in the home such is the increasing crime rate there, my partner has also raised this as something she would like to do.
And to think some advocated for defunding the police. Idiots.
There is a large difference between responsible gun ownership and gun ownership with people that commit these acts.
Making guns illegal or whatever such things are proposed only takes them away from those who own them responsibly, it won’t stop the criminals and gang members - so your issue does not get solved, it only makes people more vulnerable to the criminals who obviously won’t give up their weapons or be put off obtaining one.
Would I rather no guns in the country? Probably. Is that remotely possible? Of course not.
Once that is recognised then you have to be more nuanced with your answer and realise that now we are at this point, being armed against the types of people this thread is about is certainly more desirable than being unarmed.
Let’s say you move to America and this bloke kicks down the door to your school with your kids in it holding a gun, determined to take lives. Do you wish you have a legal gun on you at that moment, or not?
Completely up to you of course but I would choose the former every day of the week under those circumstances.

What do you mean by regulating them?
There are 400 million in circulation, many already in the hands of criminals.
Australia had 650,000 at the time they decided to take action, it’s not remotely comparable.
You have more chance of success in addressing the nations poverty and mental well-being than trying to regulate 400 million fire arms. It’s pie in the sky stuff.

Indeed, and why should they of course.
The country is armed to the teeth, the damage is already done with regards to gun production, there is no reversing that now.
If I’m living in a high crime rate area with criminals who are never going to give up their guns, then you can be damned sure I won’t be handing over mine that I have to protect my family with.
People are in dreamland, out of touch with the realities of life in some places.

They will have to live with the consequences then. Americans seem to value their gun rights more than that of their children's lives. They call it freedom, I call it enslavement

Again, it’s not an option of one or another.
I have no idea why people keep pretending that getting rid of every gun in America is something that the public can choose. It’s not feasible and not an option.
The guns are already there, 400 million of them. Many of them keep them to protect their children from those that have guns and intend harm.
Several links have been posted showing armed people breaking into family homes and being met with a gun to neutralise the threat.
That’s why people won’t give them up - because the criminals and those intending to shoot up schools won’t.
Why would you voluntarily give up your guns knowing that those you intend to protect your family from won’t be doing so.

So the guns are already there, so there's no point in trying to do anything, is that what your advocating?
Depends what you are trying to do. If you are trying to pass legislation that will essentially disarm responsible gun owners and arm criminals, then of course I’m advocating not trying to do that.
What do you believe is being suggested?

I don't really know to be honest, there doesn't seem to be any logical reason for normal individuals to need to own firearms.

Why? have you not put up links to all the children being shot dead and the thousands of innocents being shot dead there are plenty as it is an everyday occurrence in America why not put up links to them as well actually there are far more murdered with guns then that are saved by a good guy with a gun, bit strange you not putting that data up as well, why is that then

Their constitution was essentially plagiarised from the English bill of rights. Probably the most important act ever enacted (alongside the Scottish claim of rights). The Founding Fathers weren’t these great visionaries. They nicked it almost in its entirety, took out the bits about the king and added some bollocks from the Magna Carta revival that was en vogue at the time. It’s essentially the only country in the world founded on an idea. Apart from Israel possibly.
But in many ways it’s a crap idea. From slavery to prohibition to guns they have always struggled to shake off their aching anachronisms. And it’s all because of this bloody constitution. The only bit worth its salt in the 21st century is the first amendment.
The USA is still the most free country in the world and the country where absolute millions want to go and live. I hope they never surrender their guns.

It’s their constitutional right. That’s the only logical reason you need. It’s just as logical as free speech, the right to remain silent and of course the right to not having to let soldiers quarter in your house without consent. It’s a completely sensible and logical constitution for the 21st century and beyond.

Speaking just for myself, I find it curious that so many of you appear so bent out of shape, so invested, in criminal acts committed in a foreign country over 4,000 miles away?
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

So if a load of criminals had guns in your area, using them to hurt people and you could legally own one to protect your children should you need to - you wouldn’t see that as a logical reason?

Because you said you get angry at those people who say they have guns to protect themselves against the bad guys.
Why would posting a link of what the bad guys do?
It’s why the good guys have them that we are talking about, and they have them because of all the links you could post about what the bad guys do with them.
Think.

Why not do both?
Because one of them takes guns from people owning them responsibly meaning they can no longer defend themselves against the criminals who will keep hold of them.
We have been through this.
We already have gun regulations too mind. Every single gun purchase from a gun retailer has to, by law, do background checks.
So you tell me what you are proposing. Be specific.
At the moment you are chasing your own tails by just putting out the generic.

How about tackling the criminals having guns ? or is that far too simplistic.
