Summer transfer rumours thread on 13:34 - May 26 with 7220 views | simmo | Dillon Barnes being signed another year is weird af. He's not progressing or developing through the loans as he doesn't play anyway, meanwhile he's also not being kept around just to be number 2, so we're signing someone else?? Odd. Onyedima to Luton is a good move for both I feel, interesting to see if they keep hold of Mehmeti and Stewart. Assume the Admiral is back out to sea now.

Barnes has always been a strange signing and, as you say, continues to be. Kelly's obviously off to Motherwell so if Barnes isn't going to be used as number 2, what are we retaining him for - another loan in the hope he improves? It seems to be a vain hope to me.

there does seem to be a trend at clubs where they sign keepers they have no intention of ever playing as a 3rd choice. It's a great gig if you can get it. Scott Carsen at Man City following years of Richard Wright picking up medals is the dream for those 3rd choice ones

Think there can be more to it than just having a backup layabout around, or even the 'hiring a mercenary for a promotion push' interpretation previously upthread. The clubs who have employed the likes of Hart, Carson, Green, Grant, Taylor as specialist reserve keepers have spoken of them as extra captains in the dressing room, or as half-coaches, or as "safe" intermediaries between squad and staff. The role is seen as developmental as it is competitive. It can be a pretty brutal adjustment for some keepers also. Lee Grant at United was said to be struggling with it, they've signed Tom Heaton now. Obviously that applies more to the potential Lonergan signing than Barnes, but who knows. Warnock certainly seemed to value Brian Murphy in taking him along to Cardiff. From the WLS bit it sounds like Barnes is mainly Gavin Ward's pet project.

choosing an english keeper for back up, or a player who has played in england for some years, also helps clubs in european competition comply with squad rules.

Summer transfer rumours thread on 10:01 - May 26 by derbyhoop | More on the keepers (from WLS) Dieng to stay. Kelly to go, as he doesnt want to be 2nd choice. But we need a 2nd choice keeper. Lonergan known to Gavin Ward but they are still deciding whether experience or youth required. Todd Kane wanted by Charlton, Sunderland and Portsmouth. 13.1 m anybody? [Post edited 26 May 2021 10:02]

Todd Kane to Real Madrid for £13m. Wait, no, sorry. Make that Todd Kane to Surreal Madrid for 13 minutes of monkeys performing an interpretive dance to the drawn-out screaming of a man dying of terminal flatulence.

If you had a choice between Rangers and Bayern Munich , with the latter paying at least five times more wages, who would you pick?

Certainly a gratuitous signing at the time. Maybe he is better than we think? A year ago (9 months ago actually) I knew very little about Dieng's level of ability. I would rather have Barnes as a No2 than Lonergan or whoever. However, if his contract is being renewed just to be loaned out again, that seems pointless.

Barnes is an odd one. Loaned to Hibs in his final year of contract, plays 8 games (albeit 4 in pretty easy Cup games) but leaves in the January window 'to get more first team football'. Hibs give him a glowing testimony of being a good pro and a great personality in the changing room. He plays 1 game for Burton while the replacement at Hibs ends up playing 8 games after he leaves, including the Scottish Cup Final, seems a crap decision whoever made it tbh. Ex Arsenal Matt Macey (his replacement) has signed a 2 yr deal at Hibs and Dillon Barnes a new 1 yr extension it will be interesting to see who has made the right career move. Dillon did good at Hibs, I'd have no problem with him stepping up as a number 2 to Dieng but being expected as first choice in top 8, that's going to be hard given how good Seny has been. Given the published accounts, Hibs blew it by losing the cup final (because of euro income} as we're now within striking distance of the turnover of Championship clubs, the major difference now is the tolerance of owners to lose money. Like 50% of the league Hibs don't have access to the Honey pot of the EPL! [Post edited 28 May 2021 0:41]

Summer transfer rumours thread on 01:09 - May 28 with 3756 views | DavieQPR | Johansen has got to be thinking do I sign a 3 year contract with Rangers or play 1 year with Fulham then get ditched again as they should get promoted because of the parachute payments. As for Barnes I hope he has improved a lot since his Colchester days. Think he would be quite happy as 3rd choice.

Barnes might be happy as a 3rd choice keeper but would Warburton given his preference for a small squad?
Summer transfer rumours thread on 09:40 - May 29 with 2930 views | stowmarketrange | I don’t normally post transfer rumours, mainly because I never hear any,but a friend told me last night that supposedly we’re close to signing Andre Dozell from Ipswich. He was in the England U19 cup winning squad 3 years ago,and apparently he is almost out of contract and can’t agree on a new deal.He is 22,so hardly one for the future, but it’s hard to see where in the midfield he find a place.
