I've been binging on British cinema these last couple of weeks, re-watching old favourites and catching up on a couple that I'd always meant to get to but never quite managed to.
What's everybody's favourites? I'll throw mine in later on, but for now I don't want to lead the witness, y'r honour.
I'll be bookmarking this thread and adding to it occasionally.
"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."
Perhaps massively betraying my political biases but Brassed Off and Pride. A Thatcher idolising Tory I play rugby with even cried at the end of Pride.
And this bit in Brassed Off gives me chills every time
"This band behind me'll tell you that that trophy means more to me than owt else in the whole world. But they'd be wrong! Truth is, I THOUGHT it mattered. I thought that MUSIC mattered. But does it bollocks? Not compared to how people matter. Us winning this trophy won't mean bugger-all to most people. But us *refusing* it - like what we're going to do now - well, then it becomes news, doesn't it?
You see what I mean. That way, I'll not just be talking to myself, will I? Because over the last ten years, this bloody government has systematically destroyed an entire industry. OUR industry. And not just our industry - our communities, our homes, our lives. All in the name of "progress". And for a few lousy bob. I'll tell you something else you might not know, as well. A fortnight ago, this band's pit were closed - another thousand men lost their jobs. And that's not all they lost. Most of them lost the will to win a while ago. A few of them even lost the will to fight. But when it comes to losing the will to live, to breathe, the point is - if this lot were seals or whales, you'd all be up in bloody arms. But they're not, are they, no, no they're not. They're just ordinary common-or-garden honest, decent human beings. And not one of them with an ounce of bloody hope left. Oh aye, they can knock out a bloody good tune. But what the f*ck does that matter?
And now I'm going to take my boys out onto the town. Thank you."
If you like the lefty political ones....

Peterloo also looks good.

Probably not one for everyone but there's a film from 2011 called Weekend about two gay guys who meet on a Friday before one of them is about to move to America, and it is just one of the most sumptuous, agonising yet beautiful films I've ever seen. I ugly cried at the end

We're all tough old football lads aren't we? But Brief Encounter is still fantastic. There, I've said it. And The Red Shoes.
Some people poke fun at the plummy accents in Brief Encounter but it's a treat to hear people enunciating correctly. Where I live everyone seems to sound like a bit player in Eastenders.

The bit where Celia Johnson chases after Trevor Howard just as the express train thunders through is one of the best images of emotional drive ever. A real thrill.

Zulu keeps getting mentioned. It’s a film that if you watch the first 10 minutes you’re hooked. The Blue Lamp is great for the car chase around West London as it was then and as some of it was when I first went to see the RRRs. Full Metal Jacket was made in Britain.
Strong and stable my arse.

Three great films that I hadn’t seen mentioned so far.
The Whicker Man. The man who would be King In which we serve...corny but makes my chest swell with pride and my eyes tear up.
I would have mentioned brilliant The Man Who Would be King, but I wasn't sure it counted - i.e. directed by John Huston, produced by John Foreman (both American of course), but I guess as it was shot at Pinewood (and a few other places) and features three fantastic British actors - Connery, Caine and Plummer - it counts....
Still find films coming to mind.....Yangste Incident, It Always Rains On Sunday, The Tenth Man, Sparrows Can't Sing. The Frightened City, The Statement, The Long The Short And The Tall etc etc.

Not seeing many 'modern' films here. From the 90's onwards you could take your pick from;
Trainspotting Shaun of the Dead This is England 28 Days Later Attack the Block Ex Machina In Bruges Sing Street Casino Royale The Guard (OK that's Irish but still, it should make everyones best ever list) Four Lions
