Best British Films 19:47 - Sep 8 with 21671 viewsBrianMcCarthy

I've been binging on British cinema these last couple of weeks, re-watching old favourites and catching up on a couple that I'd always meant to get to but never quite managed to.

What's everybody's favourites? I'll throw mine in later on, but for now I don't want to lead the witness, y'r honour.

I'll be bookmarking this thread and adding to it occasionally.

The Ben Wheatley films Field In England and Sightseers have been mentioned. I'd say *any* Ben Wheatley film is worth checking out, especially Kill List. Worth watching that one with as little knowledge of what it's about as possible.

You're right. We have totally ignored British silent films.

I often check out Talking Pictures on 81 where there are often some classic British films. A few duds but the occasional gem. Saturday night & Sunday morning, Room at the top and films from that era are great cinema. My favourites that I can watch many times are:
Local Hero, Zulu and of course Life of Brian but I wouldn't disagree with practically every film listed on this thread.
From my impressionable youth:
A night to remember
Reach for the sky
Sink the Bismarck
Battle of the River Plate
Ice cold in Alex

Recently we had a family wedding at The Dome in Worthing, where 'Wish you were here' was filmed. Another Film 4 favourite was a Lenny Henry film (can't remember the name - The chiropodist? edit: it was called 'Coast to Coast') but some classic soul music. And on that note, The Commitments!! What a great, funny film.

Lots of good stuff here, I’d add (hopefully not repeating too much):

My Beautiful Launderette
The Long Good Friday
This is England
The Third Man
Kes
The Man in the White Suit
Brief Encounter
Any early Hitchcock made in the UK but especially The 39 Steps

And my favourite; Went The Day Well.

Oh Maggs! I love you!
Went the Day Well one of my faves too.
The Servant
The Idol
The Lodger
The Lady Vanishes

Controversial: i was really looking forward to both Lock Stock and 4 Weddings. And thought both were dreadful. Although Love Actually is the worst British film ever made.

Bare bones.

Perhaps massively betraying my political biases but Brassed Off and Pride. A Thatcher idolising Tory I play rugby with even cried at the end of Pride.

And this bit in Brassed Off gives me chills every time

"This band behind me'll tell you that that trophy means more to me than owt else in the whole world. But they'd be wrong! Truth is, I THOUGHT it mattered. I thought that MUSIC mattered. But does it bollocks? Not compared to how people matter. Us winning this trophy won't mean bugger-all to most people. But us *refusing* it - like what we're going to do now - well, then it becomes news, doesn't it?

You see what I mean. That way, I'll not just be talking to myself, will I? Because over the last ten years, this bloody government has systematically destroyed an entire industry. OUR industry. And not just our industry - our communities, our homes, our lives. All in the name of "progress". And for a few lousy bob. I'll tell you something else you might not know, as well. A fortnight ago, this band's pit were closed - another thousand men lost their jobs. And that's not all they lost. Most of them lost the will to win a while ago. A few of them even lost the will to fight. But when it comes to losing the will to live, to breathe, the point is - if this lot were seals or whales, you'd all be up in bloody arms. But they're not, are they, no, no they're not. They're just ordinary common-or-garden honest, decent human beings. And not one of them with an ounce of bloody hope left. Oh aye, they can knock out a bloody good tune. But what the f*ck does that matter?

And now I'm going to take my boys out onto the town. Thank you."

A guilty pleasure of mine, because it got panned, but I love it.

Love, Honour & Obey

Great talented cast, good characters, funny lines that live with you for years.
And mostly adlibbed if you believe them.....

Good old Norf & Sarf Lahnden.....Give it a go

Snatch has some memorable moments and This Years Love has one of the best lines in a film when Kathy Burke rolls over in bed in the morning after an encounter with something like "It's all right, mate. You've woken up with a fat bird. I'll get me coat.".

The grass is always greener.

There are loads - I'm not sure how British a film has to be in order to be classified as British, but here are a few which might not all have been mentioned so far:

A Hard Day's Night
Goldfinger
From Russia with love
Bridge over River Kwai
Notting Hill
2001 A Space Odyssey
633 Squadron
