Not much of a whisky drinker myself as I tend not to drink spirit too often, more of a beer man. However, last August at my sons christening drinks, I got to try a drop of the father in laws Glenfiddich 21 gran reserva which he keeps hidden away for special occasions. I've always been in the "Wouldn't know a cheap one from an expensive one" camp when it comes to wines and spirits etc but on that particular occasion, the quality was blatant. Went down like pure velvet, no rough finish prompting you to reach for the nearest mixer, really really good stuff.
Anyway, I want to get my dad a bottle for Christmas. Like me he prefers beer or cider but he does like the odd short now and again and as he's getting on a bit these days, I'd like to treat him to something he'd actually use as I'm done with the gadgets that get thrown in a cupboard collecting dust for years (Sat Nav, Digital photo frame, External Hard Drive, Complete collection of World at War on DVD to name but a few), but having looked around online, it's f*cking expensive and a little out my budget this year.
So, anyone here like their whisky and could possibly recommend a good 18 to 21 year old bottle, no more then £100 notes?
Your time is much appreciated.

I like a drop myself and can only say it's a tricky one and very much dependant on individual taste. I personally love the peaty West coast malts but when I gave a good pal of mine, who also likes a malt, a drop of my newly acquired Laphroaigh he nearly spat it out saying it tasted like Germoline!
Unless you know the old man likes the really peaty stuff I'd go for a Macallan or an Arbelour which are both from Speyside, super smooth and would do the trick for me without breaking the bank.
If you want to take a punt my personal favourite is Oban 14 yr old which is a West coaster, rich tasting but not OTT on the peatiness and you can get sub-£50 from Tesco amongst others.

18 - 21 year old Toast? As Ray might say, My Word. Definitely some very smooth options in that category, none of which I would ever remember because I can't afford them. Someone mentioned the Japanese whiskey earlier - I think that is worth looking into - some of them seem very highly rated and decent value, plus your F-I-L might enjoy the exocticity of that, not that I know the man obviously.

Just recently got in to drinking Scotch and over the last few months have been slowly building a collection. For me, i've tried to get at least two different whiskys from each of the main producing regions of Scotland. From Speyside i've got Glenfarclas 15 year old which is a lovely drop and the The Balvenie 21 year old, not cheap but a cracker. From the Highlands, you can't go wrong with anything from Glenmorangie, got two or three of their bottles and bar far the easiest to drink. If you're trying to get something different get a bottle or two from Islay, my personal favourite would be Bruichladdich Laddie, don't be put off by the ugly bottle it's a real winner and not that expensive. Recently got two bottles of Japanese whisky and so far have been very impressed, picked up the Hakushu reserve and the Hibiki Harmony.

Yes, does taste pretty good, but not a single malt so really can't be called a decent whiskey. Gotta be Irish or Scottish. Hardly likely the yanks are going to be able to match those centuries of dedication with their profit only approach. Look what the fcukers did with cheese! Phillistines.

Don't you mean Phillystines?
Count yourselves lucky that you don't favour Cognac. The higher cost of the base liquor and appellation French marketing means that it is much easier to get a decent and well-matured whisky at a reasonable price than an equivalent brandy.

But now you've mentioned Brandy, there is a great Brandy producer where I live in Mallorca called Suau. They have a 15 year aged standard brandy which at €19 is one of the best value spirits I've ever drank! They do a 50 year old which I'm getting in for Christmas.
Besides that, the awful production and cheesy, double-entendred dialogue suggests that a fair bit of slutty action has been cut from that clip. That bloke's irritating bray would make a machine gun an apt and handy prop.
Somehow I don't think Dewars sanctioned that piece of product endorsement.
Would highly recommend Highland park , me & a work mate took a half day last week and got well & truly p1ssed, we ended up on this stuff about 5pm and by 7pm we were well & truly oiled, fabulous
Mrs P has also just bought me back this from Ireland the other day, looking forward to giving it a try
And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

I have recently been drinking a lot of reasonably priced to affordable whiskey and bourbon. Bullet and Woodford reserve are my 2 favourite bourbons at the minute. Woodford reserve I got heavily into thanks to the price at tesco only £25 a bottle and lovely on the rocks. Whiskey is a different story I've tried a few Scottish whisky and do find them a bit harsh but I am sure the more you pay the better quality. Irish whisky is by far a smoother taste for my price range and pallet and the one I love is Jamesons Select reserve. £35 cheapest I've found but it's marvellous especially at that price and it comes in a nice box.

Try some of the Speyside and Lowland malts for a more rounded flavour.
From the Scottish isle of Islay, where the more peaty, smoky versions tend to be from (Lagavulin / Laphroaig etc) but these ones are on the smoother side. Some cracking bottles available under £100 - in particular the 18 year old.
Good luck!

I tried this out in Majestic Wines before Xmas as they had a few Craft Distilleries whiskies on offer. It had a kick to it which I found pretty good so my in laws then bought me a bottle for Xmas. It's actually quite harsh to start with, a rather smokey taste. I like.
