Whisky Drinkers? 11:28 - Nov 12 with 13614 viewsToast_R

Not much of a whisky drinker myself as I tend not to drink spirit too often, more of a beer man.
However, last August at my sons christening drinks, I got to try a drop of the father in laws Glenfiddich 21 gran reserva which he keeps hidden away for special occasions. I've always been in the "Wouldn't know a cheap one from an expensive one" camp when it comes to wines and spirits etc but on that particular occasion, the quality was blatant. Went down like pure velvet, no rough finish prompting you to reach for the nearest mixer, really really good stuff.

Anyway, I want to get my dad a bottle for Christmas. Like me he prefers beer or cider but he does like the odd short now and again and as he's getting on a bit these days, I'd like to treat him to something he'd actually use as I'm done with the gadgets that get thrown in a cupboard collecting dust for years (Sat Nav, Digital photo frame, External Hard Drive, Complete collection of World at War on DVD to name but a few), but having looked around online, it's f*cking expensive and a little out my budget this year.

So, anyone here like their whisky and could possibly recommend a good 18 to 21 year old bottle, no more then £100 notes?

Your time is much appreciated.

Definitely wasn't Jura, it had a more Scottishy / Irishy name than that.

Could have been Laphroaig?

They're the kings of the smokey / peaty / salty Highland whiskys for me. You either love them or hate them, some people reckon they taste like TCP, but I love them (the Ardbeg 10 year someone else mentioned is another good one)

I'd recommend the quarter cask Laphroiag as an amazing bottle to get, not stupidly expensive either. Like walking by the seaside on a freezing day in Scotland before sitting by a peat fire in a pub.

Won a bottle of that in a raffle a few months ago. Lovely stuff.

Urgh, can't stand the stuff. The peatieness is vile in my (uncultured) opinion. Way too mediciney. Pretty brave recommending that as a gift when your not sure if what their particular tastes are!

It's decent for a blend, but whisky snobs like me go for single malts, for which you can't beat the Macallan Gold

Try the Whilskey shop on Old Compton Street, in Soho, next to the saucy knicker shop, sound advice, try before you buy and for £100 you could get 2 possibly 3 absolute gems. Got my dad a bottle there for his retirement about 20 years ago, so been trading for decades and properly know their whiskys.

the vintage house. Seconded. Also Amathus on Dean street is pretty good too

Jack Daniels? A quality whiskey? You taking the p!ss, or what?

Single Barrell is pretty good, but I might be biased as my wife won a competition with them and they flew us both to Nashville to visit the distillery

I tend to think the Speyside single malts are delicious and easier drinking and when I (reluctantly) share any with friends who 'don't like whisky' they tend to change their minds. I don't think you have to pay £100 unless you want to....especially for someone who's not madly into it. Strongly recommend Aberlour 12, Balvennie 12, Cardhu 12. Also, although not a Speyside, a second mention of Highland Park - can't go wrong with that.

Jack Daniels Silver Select is rather pleasing. If he likes Tenessee Sour mash.

The closest thing to what cowboys drank so they told me when there.

I thought cowboys drank rotgut!

Aye, not least because it isn't really 18 years old, it's just an average.

That price would get you the Balvenie double wood which is a much finer whiskey imo. Chivas is fine, but it's a bit....i dunno...simple

Chivas is made for the Yanks in my opinion. Easy to drink and lets face it compared with the bourbon p1ss that they produce, which is only good when mixed to hide the full 'flavour'. Agree has to be a single malt. The Balvennie Double Wood is another excellent shout. This thread by the way is what I would imagine MB threads would be in heaven.

Always need to add some water to Laphroig, otherwise it is heavy going.

Lagavulin is not bad .£48 in Waitrose.

Occasional providers of half decent House music.

Again, like others, only very recently started to have the very occasional snifter having been a lager lout and then a middle aged wine drinker. I was recently given a bottle of Jameson Special Reserve Small Batch one Sunday by the folks when they arrived for dinner - think my dad won it on a golf day.

I have just had two in a row, once I saw this thread, so I can give you an up to date assessment on the batch - for research purposes only you understand.

I have to say that I really enjoy leaving it linger in the mouth for a while before letting it coat the back of the throat on the way down. Warm and smooth and when the second one has slipped down the buzz kicks in.

I sense the next 20 years could go horribly, horribly wrong.

Recommend any of the Jura range

My father is law a big whisky drinker, likes his single malts. No mixers or water, just neat

Last xmas I got a bottle of Jura superstition, and it went down a treat. I actually enjoyed a couple of fingers (that's how he measures it in his glass)

Certainly not £100 bottle, either

It may have been Lagavulin. Many of the pubs/bars in Northern Ireland and quite possibly Scotland have a kind of four brand whisky shelf, so there's a fair chance it may have been one of these.

Lagavulin, very smokey.

Highland park is good.

Bailie Nicol jarvie, a blend , but very good, the best blend I've tasted.

Believe or not Japanese whisky, Suntory Royal is excellent, under £100

You can't really go wrong with a Macallan.

But I'm astounded at the prices.

In the dim and distant past I've bought 18 yr old Macallans for £30 or whatever. They're now asking £180 !!

Go for a 12 year old....

Failing that, as others have said, go to a specialist with a budget and idea of what you like and the'll sort you out.

We'd probably get a 4 gallon drum of Farmer O'Grady's Genuine 6 Month-Matured Belgian Whiskey (£20 for cash from Mad John down the Lamb and Flag) and four hundredweight of pork scratchings from the abattoir that got rid of all those foot and mouth pigs.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

I guess the marketing people have figured out that people will spend a hell of a lot on something rare with a strong brand.

I'm still amazed how much, though. I used to buy a bottle of 18 year old as a present. It was just an upgrade from a 12.

I've just Googled and they've tapped in a worldwide collectors' market.

Shame as presumably most of these people don't even drink it.
