Improving the atmosphere at Spotland 17:58 - Mar 10 with 23180 viewsRAFC1907

As Hilly says its something that needs to happen, the amount of times at home games when its 0-0 or even when we go 1-0 up our players must be thinking we have the worst support ever.

Away following nobody can complain, great support in numbers and very vocal.

The football club is the only thing in this town that gives Rochdale any positive headlines, so surely we must do all we can to ensure the good times around Spotland remain, its as though its 1995 and were sitting 5th from bottom.

With the results the management and players deliver our support should be constantly heard over the course of 90+ minutes.

Are we still the only club in the football pyramid to stop fans bringing in flags/large banners etc? Creating a positive atmosphere around the place can only be beneficial to everyone who enters the ground on a Saturday and a much more enjoyable experience.

I have mates who would rather watch the likes of City/United on TV as they reckon the atmosphere sounds better than being at a live game at Rochdale.

Bastien Hery hit the nail on the head also.

Next home match we should have both Sandy and The Mighty Pearl Stand's Sing Off against each other should promote something like this #SandyvPearl #StandSingOff2015 #WhollBeLoudest #RAFC #TeamRochdale it's something what seen at Blackburn Rovers there own fans singing at each other it makes a great atmosphere

Maybe we could get Hilly to spin round from his dugout a la Tom Jones and ask him to buzz for the singer he'd want on his team?

But as you mentioned the sandy only know two songs, which reminds me... you need to share some of the pearl streets back catalog so we can perform in perfect harmony.

The tannoy thing is a red herring to the overall purpose of this thread. If anything it surpresses the build up by blaring uncontrollably loud shite music onto an unsuspecting public who can't make them selves heard over the high decibel din attacking their ear drums and their will to live.

It used to be called the Public Address system and was once used only to read out the teams, the sponsors and the attendance.

We really should leave it at that. The players don't need to run out to music do they? For Christ's sake this is ROCHDALE FOOTBALL CLUB (as we are screamed at as they run out for the second half!), not some American football team!

Poll: Who do you think bury should appoint as their next manager?

I'm really glad of that ridiculously and unnecessary loud pronouncement at the start of the second half, otherwise I wouldn't know where I was. Matey.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

It hasn't always been crap music though, when I was a young Dale fan the music was ace and hits like these regularly drifted over Spotland.

Boney M.....Rasputin.

David Soul.....Don't give up on us Baby.

Telly Savalas......If. (Wrist slitter)

Leo Sayer.....you make me feel like dancing.

Hot milky Coffee and Hiltons Pies and even Radio Manchesters sports introduction music was class....the Rockford Files.

It was a time when watching Rochdale Football Club used to make your eyes bleed (Donnelly would have been a star in that era) and even the tannoy blasting out those quality tunes couldn't drum up an atmosphere. Any crowd over a thousand was deemed as decent.

The music played prior to a match can have a huge impact on getting the crowd going, your not going to start doing the bouncy to One Direction are you?

In addition the tannoy man reading out the teams can get the crowd going maybe with a sing off like many clubs do around the country, or like the guy at Preston who clenches his fist towards the tunnel as the players emerge yelling 'show your support for the one, the only Preston North End'

Heres a few vids of some pre match tunes at grounds around the country, I quite like Exeters, Blackburns, Parnival de Paris used at Leicester and more often Huddersfield, I used to like the start of Let me entertain you at San Spotty as the teams ran out on the pitch to a chorus of DAAALLLEEEE!

I honestly don't think my taste in Scandinavian death metal would be appreciated by the masses at Spotland.

This is not a helpful comment, I'll admit, but I do feel my spirits sag when I hear Wonderwall wailing through from the tannoy before I've even entered the ground.

I've never seen the connection with Dale, don't particularly like the song or the performers but am struck by the repetitive use of these people's music.

On that theme, I can't help thinking what it'd have been like when I first started watching Dale in the mid-1960's if the music had been from an era 20 years before, i.e. 1945

Glenn Miller maybe, or a brisk military brass band march?

Just food for thought who reckon manc music is somehow interesting in a recidivist way.

I don't really know the disc jockey at Spotland but if he couldn't play what he wanted is he the type of guy to pack up his records and leave?

I used to know a DJ like that, he branched out into Children's Parties but insisted on playing the Beach Boys greatest hits etc. It was always about what he wanted and he would never consider playing the Birdy Song for the kids.

In my experience most Disc Jockeys are selfish buggers.

That's fair enough and i don't mind some of his music but from his vantage point he can see there are older supporters in the ground, he should show some respect and put a bit of Perry Como on. His repertoire is very one eyed.

I wouldn't say 'one kind of music' - unless you'd categorize it as guitar music? The Who, The Beatles, The Sex Pistols, The Undertones, The Rolling Stones are played regularly as well as Manchester bands and other 'Indie' stuff. I'll listen to anything - it doesn't really bother me what he plays. The away fans seem to think its great opposed to the usual chart music played elsewhere.

I always defend Dave, he plays my kind of music and I think he's different to what you get at most grounds. I'd rather have him with his Manc accent than some absolute balloon head going round the pitch with a microphone trying to gee the crowd up into a frenzy. I've seen that at far too many away grounds. What we have is unique from what I've seen, and it's only the Dale fans that whinge because away fans seems to love it.

That being said, I do fully understand that people get annoyed because there's a lack of variety. I'm not blinkered to the point I can't see that many people's match day experience would be better if there was more variety. All I can suggest to him is that he plays stuff from different decades rather than have New Order following the Stone Roses following The Smiths following the Happy Mondays, following the Courteeners etc etc. Maybe sticking more 60's and 70's music would be an idea.

I'm amazed this has become a Dave Sweetmore discussion, but if you look at twitter you will see how many away fans love his playlists compared to the drivel served up at most grounds. Big asset to the club in my eyes.

Away fans love it because they only listen to it once or possibly twice a season. We've had to endure it every fortnight for the past ten years.

Good idea about the different decades but your point about the away fans isn't really valid because they only have to listen to the playlist once a season. I like the type of music he plays but what about the others who don't?

As with any type of music there will some who don't and some do. There are many vocal supporters on this board of Dave Sweetmoore's preferred type of music but others who don't like it. When we to away games my sister will often comment that the music is much better. Personally I find he plays some good songs. But much of it is repetitive especially when you get to the 20th home game of the season.

In reality the music he plays will not affect attendances or the atmosphere at the game one bit. I doubt anyone will/will not attend a game due to the type of music Dave plays.
