The Official Swansea City Versus Crystal Palace Premier League Match Thread 12:14 - Nov 22 with 42986 viewsjackharris

Venue: Liberty Stadium, Landore, Swansea, UK
Date: Saturday 26th November 2016
Kick Off: 15:00 (UK time)
TEAM NEWS
Swansea's South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-yeung has been ruled out for around two weeks with a toe injury. Captain Leon Britton is fit again after missing the draw at Everton with a calf injury, while Jefferson Montero is also available following a hand problem. Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley has returned to training this week after a knock and could be involved. However, Loic Remy will be out for a further three weeks with a calf injury, and Steve Mandanda remains sidelined.

MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES
John Roder: "This is not the most glamorous fixture in the Premier League this weekend, but it may just be the most important. Two struggling sides under intense scrutiny, both desperate to halt poor runs of form. It's the start of a crucial period for the Swans, who face four of the five teams currently just above them before the end of the year. As has been well documented, Palace have had an awful 2016 in the league - the worst record in the top four English divisions. By the time these teams meet again in early January, both will be hoping to be in a stronger position - starting with a positive result this weekend."

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY
Swansea manager Bob Bradley: "We played a good match against Everton, training has been good this week and now we are ready to push on in a strong way. We are ready to take all of the work we have done and make it count on Saturday. With the support of our fans at the Liberty, I see this game as an opportunity for us to build on the good things we did last week."

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew: "I'm an experienced manager and I have been in this situation before. This is my ninth Premier League season and I want it to be 10 with Crystal Palace. A win would make our position look clearer and take the pressure off us. The points we get in the next few matches will be crucial to where we will finish. Our fans are getting frustrated, they are seeing good performances but we are making mistakes we should not be doing."

LAWRO'S PREDICTION Palace boss Alan Pardew needs a win just as badly as Bob Bradley, his Swansea counterpart. The difference is the Eagles have got players we know can perform in the Premier League, but they are not doing that at the moment. Prediction: 1-1

MATCH FACTS Head-to-head The three previous Premier League meetings between these sides at the Liberty Stadium have all ended 1-1. Swansea are unbeaten in their last five home league games with Palace, although four have been draws.

Swansea haven't won since the opening day of the season. Their 11-game winless run (D3, L8) is a club record in the top flight. Bob Bradley has made the worst start by a Swansea manager in the Premier League, failing to win any of his opening five matches (D2, L3). They have claimed just two points from six home games this season - the fewest in the top flight. The Swans have conceded three goals in four of their last seven league matches. Gylfi Sigurdsson has had a hand in six of Swansea's 11 goals in the Premier League this season (three goals, three assists).

Crystal Palace are on a five-game losing run in the Premier League; they haven't lost six in a row since November 2013 (seven defeats). They have earned 22 points from 31 matches in 2016, an average of 0.71 points per game which is the fewest of any team in the top four divisions in England. The Eagles are the only team yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet this season. They have gone 17 league games without one and conceded 12 goals in their last four matches. Palace have scored a league-high eight headed goals this campaign. Wilfried Zaha has provided an assist in each of his last four Premier League games.

Very proud to be voted Planet Swans Poster of the Year 2017 by my fellow posters. Especially on a site that nearly had 20 million impressions last year.

Hard to make a prediction when you have manager capable of making 8 changes between league matches.

Going to play it safe and go with 1-3 for now. If he plays a strong team and sensible formation then I'm open to predicting a win.

But only one change from the team that faced Arsenal.

I agree, but I also liked the look of Fer, Cork and Fulton together in midfield.

How can we accommodate those three, plus a striker, plus Gylfi, plus two wingers?

Either play three at the back, or have only one winger, or start with twelve!

The latter is the best option IMO.

Seriously though, let's make The Liberty the twelfth man!
I've dithered this week about going on Saturday; have been away from home and missed family and a catch up with them was more appealing than a nervous afternoon in Swansea. Even the egg sounded equally appealing. However after a pep talk from Mrs C over the phone I'm gonna be up for it come Saturday. Don't let me down Coach.

Its pretty strange to claim to make that no one cares what he thinks when people keep replying to him. The people who don't care what he thinks ignore him.

Its just a ride...

An assessment of the match from today's Guardian.

"A touch of dead ball inspiration from Sigurdsson?

Between them, Crystal Palace and Swansea City have managed just four wins and a staggering 15 defeats in 24 Premier League matches so far this season, a state of affairs that makes this contest the weekend’s equivalent of two drunks swinging at each other in an alley.

Should either manager lose a game likely to be low on finesse but no less compelling a spectacle for its absence, they will find themselves the subject of no end of criticism from fans for whom the spectre of relegation looms increasingly large.

Alan Pardew seems genuinely delusional, having convinced himself his side do not concede from set-pieces even though the stats suggest otherwise. Nine of the 21 goals shipped by Palace this season have come from dead ball situations and in Gylfi Sigurdsson, Swansea have one of the most accurate set-piece specialists in the business.

Whether it’s from one or more of the free-kicks and corners Pardew’s team have proved so hopelessly inept at defending, the in-form Icelandic midfielder could well prove instrumental in helping Bob Bradley secure his maiden victory as Swansea City manager in a game that looks must-win for both men in charge."

I wouldn't drop either Talyor or Fer myself. I am guessing that Palace's game plan will be to get balls into Benteke. The above 2 did pretty well at stopping crosses and corners coming in against Everton. The only change I would consider would be van der Hoorn in for Fernandez, although he weren't to bad first half against Everton. To be honest, I have seen little evidence so far this season that playing with a striker will make us any more likely to score than playing Gylfi as a false nine.

Upthecity!

That's very interesting and has made me change my mind. I'd thought that we needed Fernandez as the only one big enough to look after Benteke, but maybe the journalist is correct and van der Hoorn would be better. And I'm surprised by Montero's stats but still can't see him starting.

Easy, swap Barrow for a striker and play our lopsided midfield 5. Might be needed in this game too as Palace have always had pace to burn and can pull the strings in the middle with Cabaye.

Who knows what Bob will do though. I'd be reluctant to change it too much after Everton. I can't agree with changing Amat & Fed either. They give a much better base to build out from the back than VDH and Mawson do at the moment. We actually looked like us for large parts of the game at Everton.

Fab

Naughton VDH Amat Taylor

Fulton Cork

Dyer Gylfi Barrow

Baston

I'd rather Kingsley but if we rotate left backs for the 6th game in a row it'd be ridiculous.

VDH will have a far better chance of confronting the aerial threat than Fernandez would, although that's a pretty low bar.

I'd be tempted to bring Leon back in but I think Fulton & Cork deserve another go after a solid display at Everton.

If we play with no recognised striker and Gylfi up front as a false 9 at home against a team that has lost 5 in a row then I fear for my health.

Got to agree with the last paragraph, please play a true striker option.

The day starts with a mild hangover but a black pudding & fried egg sarnie will put that right. Let's hope none of our 'all stars' have any form of hangover.

We're going to learn a little more about Coach Bob today and I'm intrigued to see the team sheet for this 6 pointer home game. Surely he will start with a recognised striker, I'm thinking he will go with width, we might even see Dyer start after his U23 run out.

The weather is looking good too for a beer & burger at Frankie & Benny's. Enjoy your day folks, if you're going then make as much noise as you can; your team needs you.

2-0.

Leaving shortly to head down with absolutely no idea of what to expect today.

How many changes?

Will he play a striker?

Or 2 strikers?

Or no strikers?

Who'll be in the back 4 (who did he draw out this week from the lucky dip bag of defenders)?

We could win, lose or draw today and none of the results would surprise me at this point.

Anyway, blind faith ruling as ever...2 - 1 win. Please.

And by the way - plenty of tickets available today for the game it looks like, which is clearly a sign of what size or our proper support is.

Oh,..Dave, what's occuring?

Treat it like a cup final
Must win game
6 pointer

etc, etc.

We just have to win.

Would be interesting if McB is involved. Let's face it, he couldn't possibly put in less effort than our 2 new strikers did against Utd, and he's a knack for finding the net. Ready to lead the line though? Not sure, seems a bit lightweight to me but there's only one way to find out. Hopefully from the bench though - I wouldn't start experimenting in these games. We need our proven players on the pitch in their best roles to pull through this spell.
