Have any of you lot had 'posh fish n chips' in a swanky hotel or restaurant cooked by a 'known' chef. I haven't , just wondered like.
Geales in Notting Hill is about as close as you'll get to that. They've been there years. Also used to have a proper take away fish shop in a side street back when I went to school locally in the 70's although I think they just have two restaurants in Notting Hill and Chelsea now.
Good food, but not enough of it and really expensive but a comprehensive fish of all types menu.

The winner was tiny little scallops with some sort of potato puree or mouse for the chips and the mushy peas was a spider web of green drizzle. I don't know the name of the place but the best restaurant is in a small place called St Just's Cornwall. The best take away is about a 5 minute walk from Grimsby's ground. It is or at least should be one of the food laws of England that you should eat properly prepared mushy peas with fish and chips, so in that case if you want properly prepared mushy peas then you'll have to move up North as we don't have the ability to make proper mushy peas down here.
On a separate matter anyone who puts cheese on peas (mushy or non mushy) is a twiglet.
Finally, if per chance you should ever be transported to Australia for crimes against this once great nation of ours the you're in the shit, they are fcking useless at making fish and chips, absolutely useless.

Jeez, I could have whacked her across the bay. I told the the greasy gum chewer behind the counter what I thought and it wasn't so complementary.

Unless it's a 'specialised ' place like Chumley Warners. Seriously ,the man knows his chips and his fish and his batter.A fair few of my mates have said that their rellies who have visited have really rated it. Hopefully I will have my own consumer test later this year if my Father Inlaw does indeed visit again. He is hard to please because he lived in Skeggy for a few years and they know their stuff up that way.

God! Remember when restaurants served chicken and chips or other such meals out of baskets? A stupid fad from the 70's and 80's. I remember my old man at one of these posh nosh establishments as he used to refer to them [ they weren't that posh really] but anything out of the ordinary was highbrow to him. To the waiter he shouted, " Oy mate, where's me bleedin' plate? I aint eating out of this"!! The waiter or manager came all over posh, " Ooh this is what we do here sir" To which my old man replied " Well you can DO one Toby, I ain't eatin' out of a shopping basket, don't know where it's been"!! By now everyone was looking at our table, naturally, some smirking and hiding laughs I was sure. I know I was. My mum fed up with this fusilade just told the chap serving, to get him a plate and while he was at it, the rest of us too. The server stammered something in defence of baskets and how it was the new thing and got us plates. The meal I recall wasn't that bad, but my old man wouldn't have stayed any longer if no plates had surfaced. I blame my brother for this. He went through a silly posh phase at the time.

Reading this thread yesterday salivating at the mouth I relented & threw the diet out of the window and came home with Fish n chips 1 large cod , one battered sausage , large portion of chips and a full fat coke oh and two rounds of bread for chip butties I felt like a crack addict getting his hit as I devoured pretty much all of it in 15 minutes it was handsome

no time for tears Pommy I scoffed the lot pretty much , In Northampton we don't have that many great fish n chip shops the only decent one is on the other side of town which I took a detour to it was good the only complaint I had was they don't wrap the fish n chips anymore they put it in boxes still I got a wedge of lemon and a tub of tartare sauce with it oh and the crispy bits of my fish was mixed with my chips which is a hidden gem

In London I would recommended Nautilus, West Hampstead. As I am Jewish origin I would recommended the fish cooked in matzo meal batter. Out of London I would recommended Fish-a-Licious in Leigh -on -Sea nothing like a summer's day in Essex, admiring Essex girls and popping down to Southend for Rossi's ice cream.
+1 for Nautilus. Very good, but pricey.
I still think you have to go North for the best, my vote goes to Seniors in Lytham. They won the best in UK prize in 2012.
Olley's in Herne Hill is a veritable institution. They have a picture up of the 'Cilla' - when she came in she apparently ate about half the menu. Much of their fish is now MSC too, which is nice. Otherwise, George's on Portobello Road used to be nice.

I only really like the Superfish chain down here as it's cooked the traditional Yorkshire way, fried in dripping. The hundreds of Chinese chippy's seem to know how to get a fine crisp batter, but often lacks in taste.
