If It's Wednesday, This Must Be Belgium match fred 10:11 - Jan 24 with 18637 viewsTheChef

Confidence high amongst the Rs, but for whatever reason the Owls always provide tough opposition.

I'll take a point now.

Poll: How old is everyone on here?

Completely pedestrian today. Impossible to argue with the result, Wednesday by far the better team

Shit but local

Thought we were ok for about 60 minutes, but we got increasingly leggy as the second half went on. Disappointing but we've got time to get people sharp again before next Saturday.

If It's Wednesday, This Must Be Belgium match fred on 16:50 - Jan 25 by SherryHoop

We've been taken apart by a proper away performance here.

I feel like Marti has been outplayed today. They've answered all of the questions we asked.

Smith made the difference for them. Classic Championship tactics.

Put the play off champagne on hold. Can't criticise anyone too much. Had Paals FK gone in I think we probably would have won. Fine margins.

Smith and their balding magician Bannon, who we never ever seem to deal with, to be precise. The two of them, plus Windass, are quality players though, even if Bannon and Smith look like they're a combined age of 100. Just not enough quality, momentum or goal threat today from us, and they really stepped it up in the second half. For me, Frey was badly off it, Chair is still sub-par, Varane was peripheral, and our delivery from corners and set pieces annoyingly shoddy. The subs were too late (and seemed to take an age to come on). Credit to Wednesday, who really did a number on us . . . again. We were outplayed on the pitch and out-thought on the bench.

All that said, I'm disappointed rather than disheartened. We're a half-decent, mid-table team, and something I think Clive may have said about how our lovely run will inevitably
come to an end once we come up against a good side who are on their game duly has.

We really don't. So far off it today. Oh well, hopefully that'll stop all the playoff talk bollox. Me, I'm still looking down the table and hoping we have enough points.

Agree. Anywhere between 10th and 15th would be a good season. I still think we need another striker. Celar might come back a new man hopefully. Bit concerned by Illy's performances though.

Agree 100%.

Did a good job on us.

Hope Marti learns from it.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

A shame but I got no real complaints. Wednesday were bigger, faster and on the day better. Dust ourselves off and Go again

They seem to do us every time down here.

Used the tactics they (and Boro) win with consistently against us. Fair play, they were the better side.

Paal's free kick hit post and comes out, their chance hits the post and crept over the line. First goal was vital today.

We’d were very well coached today , the way they closed down in packs of 5 or 6 all over the pitch and whatever we think of Bannon the way he managed his energy through the game to finish it how he did was impressive .. bit of a bogey team , long week .. carry on

Poor game today.

First half was pretty equal, some decent passes. Morgans lovely ball across had to have someone on the end of it, frey has to be there for that and it could of been 1-0 and a completely different game.

Varane and field were very negative today, backwards passes, especially varane, looks totally lost when he HAS to turn and face the opposition goal. Saw the impact of Morgan coming off , there was no one who had the ability to find the lofted passes behind/in behind like the one he done at hull.

Chair was poor again , especially his deliveries. Paal unlucky to hit the bar which would of made it 1-1

Good thing all the other results went our way so still only 6 points off play offs😃

Response needed against millwall

Thought today was about the squad. We work our arses off for every win, pretty much same 11 every week. Caught up with us today.

Dreadful flat performance all over the park.
Mistake not to play Cook who wouldn’t have let Michael Smith bully him.
Weak as hell ref who Sheffield Wednesday exploited but we were far too nice to do that.

They deserved it because they went for it, so fair play. 50/50 first half, but we started the second in a very sloppy way. Very leggy in midfield and no cohesive link up play with Frey. One game too far over the last week or so.

Bannon should have got a clump. How many times has he done this to us, and he wasn’t at his best today. Good player.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Well that was a massive letdown. So so pedestrian today. They were booed off on Wednesday because of how poorly they defended their lead and we barely tested them. Hopefully some changes for Millwall.

Thought the subs were too late this time, Frey wasn't getting any more from their backs and we needed Kolli etc on earlier to push them back. Some hard games coming up.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

Agree, and for that 60 minutes or so we had Bannon in check. He then dropped deeper to find space, our midfield balance somehow went wrong with our subs and game over.

Frustrating given I think Marti got it fairly right the first half with Varane more or less stopping Bannon, Field on Charles and Morgan free to create more. But second half Rohls yet again won the tactical battle.

That was Wednesday's sixth away win so they are a threat on their travels. It is irritating that since they and Sunderland returned from league 1, we have not beaten either club. Today's display reminded me of earlier in the season where we were too slow, not direct enough, created very little and no quality to break down an organised team.

Millwall won't be easy. They beat Wednesday at home 3-0 and also beat Burnley and Leeds without conceding so we will need to carry a more attacking threat if we want to score there than we displayed today.

Rohl’s tactics were spot on. Defend deep and stop Smyth having as much of a chance to get in behind, tactical fouling (absolutely mental refereeing performance that would have been lenient in about 1983) and lob everything at set pieces.

But I thought the difference was how leggy we were. The game was crying out for subs well before they came. I don’t think they were the wrong subs and Colback did fine plus Varane has got through a lot recently. Doing Plymouth then Hull on Hull’s field was always a tough ask today against a physical team. All a bit of a perfect storm with their performance, the refereeing and not freshening it up a bit.

Hindsight is easy but….

Don’t think Varane needed to come off. He looked a bit pissed off.

Colback was off the pace.

Kolli should have come on for Chair much earlier on - around 55mins. Before Alfie and Saito for sure.

Dunne was running on empty but no way Ashby was coming on. Maybe that’s why he picked a fight at the end.

No point risking Cook late on but maybe we could try Morrison in midfield if we have a man unbalance of CBs for the rest of the season.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Disappointed but not too bothered. Three game week, tired players (although smyth must have discovered nuclear fusion the way he runs and runs). Best news is Ilias’ extension. Pick up, dust off, move on.

Wow, some slightly OTT responses on here today (as usual, I guess). No credit in the bank from 2 wins on the road in 4 days then ....

We weren't that bad. Have played far worse many times this season and picked up points. Just seemed in every move we made there was always one mis-placed pass.

Think the ref played a part also. So poor. Killed any momentum we had with his endless poor decisions and procastinations.
