Raining quite hard now at 4.00am. An already sodden pitch that will have part defrosted will now be collecting water on top. The grounds people are on a hiding to nothing at the moment

Very, very dodgy is this. How come this story was circulating at 9.00 pm last night that the game would be played at Stockton on Wednesday?. Answers are needed and quickly. It stinks.

Remember when Big Jim complained about the standard of Wealdstone’s pitch a few weeks ago? That comment is looking stupider as the weeks go by

Continuing the theme of mismanagement. We can’t control the weather, but failing to provide a playable surface for three home gamesmen’s in a row is very poor. The weather in Rochdale is a surprise to no-one who is from the town. Perhaps why the non Ogden Co chair has struggled with getting the club prepared for ordinary winter weather.

After hearing the rain last night, which obviously continued later on as per ThreeLions post, it was a worry that waterlogging would become a potential issue. Whether it should be after such a short period of rain is another discussion, but the problem is obviously becoming very serious.

This “dryject” looks to be the immediate hope, but we have to think every home game could be in doubt if there’s rain forecast.

We deserve some detailed explanations on what can now be done and why they think it will work. And have they a plan to hire special covers over the next few months. And will the club be offering free transport to Stockton on Wednesday for those prepared to go. Play offs will be at serious risk if the fixtures back up any more than they have already

We’ve deserved a lot more for the last three weeks.

The club and the Trust have, until now, let down supporters with respect to giving a proper understanding of all the current problems and what the various contingencies are.

It is not too late for them to address this.

Note: This doesn’t include raking up who did/didn’t do what in 2020 - we all know that. Deflection achieves nothing.

Questions in my mind.

1. Does the head groundsman/woman; whomever that might be, have the skills/experience to operate in these cicumstances ? I do not have the answer to this question, but you have to wonder at this point. We lost the Boston game after 6mm of overnight rain after all. I did not know Oli Makin or Phil Collinson personally, but the impression I formed is that they understood their craft. Do we have the same level of competence now ? It's clearly needed.

2. What's the plan to remediate the pitch ? Short-to-long term. I'd like Murray to ask the Chief Exec / Chairman for a coherent plan on behalf of the Supporters he represents. This should be presented at the upcoming Fans Forum so the objectives and accountabilities are clear to everyone. We've seen no evidence of a plan which is typical of the club where Delves and Gauge are concerned. Just the usual vacuum and disengagement. Any notion of a Project 5000 is frankly laughable with these guys at the top table IMO.

Tell me about it, I have travelled to Rochdale 3 times so far this season for nothing. Didn't make the same mistake today.

I see that the tickets from today won't be valid and will need to be refunded. Stockton will issue tickets from Monday at their normal prices - which are marginally higher than todays. I can only assume they had little confidence of the game going ahead today and had already agreed with Stockton to switch it as a precaution. I guess their pitch guarantees it will go ahead - Hartlepool a few miles up the road is off due to frozen pitch. It is certainly cold (albeit sunny) in the north east.

Your point no.2 is absolutely spot on. It's a joke up there at the minute. The Trust is a " rudderless " floating ship at the moment and I don't expect any tough questions being asked from them. The club is the same. Credit to the Ogdens taking us on but nothing is changing. The same useless cronies are operating things on a day to day basis.

That last sentence is what worries me the most and what everyone should be concerned about.

I can accept frozen pitches in winter from time to time, due to not having the luxury of a heated pitch & very little sunlight getting to what's always been the problematic Main stand side.

Then there's the frost covers, how effective are they? Probably making this up but was it a minus 2/3 rating they had when purchased? They are also relatively old now and will have perhaps naturally lost a bit of effectiveness.

Now onto the rain. In the past a sudden 20min downpour has seen games off. The pitch never really draining despite the amount of summer renovation/investment over the years in numerous close seasons.

People can point to the climate in Rochdale, but I won't accept its massively different on average than other teams close to us. Some of which are leagues below us so you'd think would have less resources
available, but have got games on when we haven't.

The Oldham postponement aside I worry that the pitch cannot deal with moderate, even mild rainfall. Between now & seasons end we'll have plenty more rain so this fixture backlog will only get worse you'd think.

Is there a real prospect we'll have to play home games away from Spotland? The league surely won't put up with too many more postponements.

Those in position at the club with the responsibility of getting us through this I don't envy one bit, but it needs dealing with and fast.

IMO the Golden Share is being used as leverage for compliance by the Trust - even if not explicitly

Until that issue is sorted, i doubt there will be much pushback on behalf of the fans

They need to sort out a chairman too. Their AGM was a real worry.

I'm not sure its a subject that warrants criticism of the Co-Chairman just because he isnt a native Rochdalian..but it would be interesting to hear what the ground staff suggested might be needed. The current problems being worse than last season might suggest that perhaps the work done on the pitch pre-season has created a problem or aggravated an existing one. The difficulty is that noone really knows that there is a problem until the weather creates one and lets be honest, the last few weeks / months of weather have been fairly poor even by Rochdale standards.
So, is it the pitch, is it the drains, is it just the weather? Or a combination of all of them? No one seems to know but its going to be difficult and expensive to fix if the work this week doesnt do the job...

This is where I think we're heading. The pitch clearly can't handle any adverse weather and we're only a 3rd of the way through winter so there's plenty more to come.

When will we get to the point where we have to look at playing games away from Spotland and actually doing something with the pitch? What can we do at this time of year?

It's rumoured that a lot of the problems are caused by sub-standard work being carried out by the contractors employed to do the work on the pitch and possible inferior quality products used in the process. There is no cheap option or short cut when it comes to providing a top quality pitch.

Without the pitch, we have no club, in the same way a theatre without a stage is going bust.

If, as a club we have to spend a massive amount to rectify the faults, then so be it. If the club (per the Odens) wish to see crowds increase to 5,000, then someone needs to start cracking the whip and get their collective fingers out. Coasting along like this, is unacceptable. We have a team that is capable of reaching the play-offs, which could lead to the Holy Grail of the EFL, but we won't be going anywhere without a decent surface on which to achieve our collective aims.

Sadly, when the shares are watered down to such an extent as they were, it leaves the shareholders with no effective voice and no chance of being able to call for changes as has happened previously. Therefore, we are stuck in an endless rut and can't do anything about it.

“It is easier to fool people, than to convince them that they have been fooled”

That doesn't mean it will not freeze if it gets wet and frosty weather within a short period..and once frozen, like grass, it becomes unplayable.

"Moisture retention: Artificial pitches, like 4G pitches, retain moisture in the winter, which can freeze and make the surface hard and unsafe to play on.
Insulating effect: The infill and carpet of an artificial pitch can insulate it, causing it to remain frozen even when natural grass around it has thawed.
Snowfall: Snow can quickly settle on a frozen pitch."
