I don't agree with Jasper all too often but on this occasion I do. Getting 36 would be a minor miracle from where we were. SO lets make it it a major miracle and get 40 points please.

I firmly believe 36 points would be enough.

This was the table last year. Newcastle ended up getting relegated on 37 points. got to aim for 40.

At about this time we had a resurgence under guido when he came and king curt which got us out of the relegation quite easily

And now we have a new manager who has brought a good footballing philosophy and more importantly CONFIDENCE,PC also has a solid coaching team behind him with 2 definite and possibly 1 more astute signings which will bring more confidence and competition for places

Atm things are looking up

Oh yes and imo we haven't finished in the signings department

And to answer the op we will need at least 38 possibly 40 to make sure that we keep our place in the PL as the teams around us will up their performances as the season goes on

One thing is for sure it's going to be a bumpy ride but now we have a 'PROPER' coach in charge we at least know the players will be properly prepared and up for the fight

I reckon there's seven wins to be had looking at remaining fixtures.

Think we'll need em. Cant see 36 being enough.

Pre New Year I didn't think we had a chance of getting anywhere near 36.

Now if the right team turns up I can see us being capable of getting 40.

Shows what a bit of organisation and new faces does.

Remaining home fixtures look kinder than away ones. Have to pick up three points in the games against Hull, Burnley, Middlesbrough and Sunderland. Do that and with a win or two and some draws elsewhere we'll hopefully have enough.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I have no doubt that 38 will be enough, probably 37 and maybe 36.

With our remaining fixtures 36 points would be a decent return in my opinion, but whether that is enough remains to be seen. I think it may be, just.

The top four this year all have more points than Arsenal did last year. Chelsea are eleven points better off.

36 points would have been enough in 9 of the last 17 seasons at this level. The average points needed over that time has been 36.2. Only twice has it needed to be 40 points

for 36 points to not be enough, if we got to 36 pts we'd need 6 wins, meaning one of Palace,Hull or Sunderland would need to win 7 more games

6 wins? You don't think we might pick a few draws along the way?

We could win one and draw the rest, or we could win 2 and draw 12, win 3 and draw 9, win 4 and draw 6, or win 5 and draw three. That will take us to 36 points. Or we lose all the games, or draw all the games or win one or two and lose the rest which wont get us to 36 points or we may win them all or lose a couple that will take us to more than 36 points.

Personally I don't think 36 points will be enough this season

If we stay up we have basically done it playing 27 games the 11 under Bradley we forfeited.... Would be an amazing achievement

Be nice if we were only 3 points and 2 places behind Chelsea this season

I crunched the numbers prior to last season, 36 pts tended to keep you up whist 35 pts and you tended to go down, as it turned out last season a team on 37 points went down, but there was a very weak team in the league last season which tended to push other teams points totals up.

The figures crunched was over a long period since the Premier League became a 20 team competition, so I would still say as a rule of thumb 36pts stays up and 35pts goes down.

36pts is just less than a point a game and teams at the bottom that are likely to finish 17th/18th are currently going to be around that 35/36 point mark, if they are a fraction behind that pace on average in reality they are right on that pace as they tend to get more points towards the end of the season than during the season [prem status on the line, mid table teams nothing to play for etc]

I'm getting hawkish now. I see no reason at all why we can't almost expect to win four more home games from Burnley, Leics, WBA, Boro, Stoke and Evo. Plus one from Hull, Watford and Sundo away which gives us 36, then another win or couple of draws and it's job done. I know you can easily be brought crashing down to earth, but very much in our own hands now. On new years day I thought we were trussed, basted, roasted, munched, digested and ready for the U bend.

The way this season's going 36 points should be just about enough to keep us up, but as others have already said, our goal difference will be the critical factor.

And I fear the ghost of Bob will come back to haunt us.
