Match Thread: Charlton vs Rochdale on 21:08 - Jan 12 by Nigeriamark | Finished 4-4 Over the 90 minutes you have to say they deserved to get a point and also missed some sitters. However gutting that 3 of their goals came from poor defending with the last one horrendous. I hope McLaughlin can stay fit because he was decent against a good attack. We struggled in the centre half position the whole game. Roberts will play better with EOC or even McShane but not sure about with Jim. 7 goals in 2 games but only 2 points or put another way 2 brilliant halves & 2 poor ones. I'd rather focus on maintaining a goal threat and hope we can tighten at the back. Last thing I want to see agains Wigan is focusing on the clean sheet & possession. At least we have been entertained via ups and downs in the last 2 games on a positive, have we ever scored 4 goals as good as that in a game, every one a cracker [Post edited 12 Jan 2021 21:12]

Really don’t understand why McShane wasn’t brought on either for any of the CHs or alongside them when Baah went off.

If ever a couple of games summed us up it’s the last two. I know Charlton are a good team but to be in such a strong position at half time and throw it away is frustrating, to do it in the way we did was infuriating. Did we really think we could fanny around at the back for 45 minutes and see the game out? Pathetic game management and that has to come from BBM. We scored some great goals and, I guess, have to take the positives from that but that game was there for the taking. Keep hoping we learn things from every game but we never seem to. Aghhh

Match Thread: Charlton vs Rochdale on 21:24 - Jan 12 with 2390 views | jfmolyneux | Ridiculous game, aged me by at least 5 years. Some cracking finishing from both teams, alongside some catastrophically, apocalyptically bad defending. After that second half, I'm pretty pleased with a point, they were all over us until they went down to ten. No idea why we didn't bring McShane on. Baah had a great game, I actually thought it was probably the right decision to sub him at that point, but absolutely not for Dooley. Sadly didn't think Beesley offered much that game. Humps showed his quality throughout, very trustworthy number 9, strong, quick, and such a clean striker of the ball.

Trying to look on the bright side, BBM has had 2 part seasons in charge and this is his first potential full one. We shipped out our top goal scorer and we have a side full of goals when we play to our strengths. We have a really decent keeper but we desperately need to fix the back 4. 37 goals in 20 games. We are spotting the opposition 2 goals/game on average. That's suicidal.

As others have said, this game sums us up perfectly, crazy game, crazy season. Either brilliant or terrible, no half measures. Third top scorers and third bottom conceded. I hope BBM can get the balance right

Top goalscorer who got a last minute winner tonight. His first goal in ten games and his second in the last twenty one.

Looked like the Mighty Baah was struggling to shake off the effects of a strong challenge that forced him off the pitch for attention a couple of minutes before being subbed.....seemed to signal 'double vision' to onlooker when leaving the pitch after foul??!! | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Match Thread: Charlton vs Rochdale on 21:41 - Jan 12 with 2130 views | richfoad32 | What were our possession stats tonight? Maybe one of the downsides of being more direct and less of the farting about is that the opposition will have a lot more of the ball as well, and better teams will be able to take advantage of it? I think the majority of people on here said they wanted to see a more attacking approach, regardless of the result. They certainly got that tonight!

It was the second half farting around that cost us unfortunately.

they did and then they complain that if the game's more open the opposition will get more chances - you can't please some people

Beesley won several headers and especially in the first half held up their attacks down the right - he had a new role which might make him less visible than when he's been chasing shadows all game

very biased attacks on Dooley - yes he gave the ball away when there were no options from his teammates and they scored as a result; Roberts did exactly the same, lost almost all his headers and got out-muscled and out-positioned by his opponent, but he isn't getting slated as incompetent.

People are entitled to be annoyed about poor defensive play, but who's complaining about the opposition getting more chances because we've been able to exploit our attacking options to better effect? Very few, if any, and that's not "people"

I thought he had a very below par first half and said so. The issue is not about expansive football, it’s about being more direct going forward ie. quick, fast play and shots at goal, while remaining solid at the back. The defensive deficiencies tonight were, in the main, due to poor clearances, marking and choices. Will admit that the selections of Baah and Beesley wide will impact the defence, but it doesn’t mean those defenders shouldn’t concentrate on the basics and as good as he’s been until recently, Roberts now has to get that right or he’ll go back to Brighton and not improved enough to fulfil his obvious potential.

Dooley’s reaction after they scored will help you understand what happened. The reaction of a man who knew he had massively ballsed up.
