Which is precisely why Cummings has steered him well clear. I’ve been trying to think of the moment it all went wrong, trying to put my finger on the turning point that lead us down the road of having two moral imbeciles vying for the keys of No.10? It’s too easy just to say it’s all down to the referendum, the malaise began long before that.

Agreed. I also can't see how any of the manifestos successfully address that malaise. Sad times.

One could argue it was Tony Blair that was the turning point, but for all his faults he was a better PM than either of these two will ever be. Iraq was a big mistake and one the left have used to beat centrist politics out of labour. I really fear a Johnson government more than Corbyn, and I think Corbyn would be a disaster. Decent politicians seem to be marginalised. Perhaps the best we can hope is another hung parliament and Labour get a leader with some balls (not any of Jeremy's coterie) or almost an old fashioned patrician Tory. No wonder Sturgeon and Price look reasonable choices compared to a corrupt liar and a marxist idiot.

I think it started before Blair, it's what allowed him to believe he could do whatever he wanted and no one would stop him. Blair had seen how the people felt, how they needed to believe in something. Blair says he doesn't like Populist politics but isn't it what put Blair into power? The apathy that was rising before Blair went supernova after him. People had believed him and his 'things can only get better' but when he turned out to be just a slimy, two faced, self serving 'blue' socialist people just switched off. Then the referendum came and as it turns out it may well have been the biggest single protest vote we'll ever see. Were people really saying we want to leave or were they saying to politicians, if you say remain is the best thing then we'll choose leave because we don't trust you. I've said before, amongst my reasons for choosing leave was I think we have too many politicians interfering in our lives, the more politicians we have, the worse things get. On top of voting leave, if I could choose, there'd be a massive shake up in UK politics which would include abolishing the HoL in favour of an elected upper chamber. I'd have indy refs too and anybody who wanted out of the UK could go but remaining in means scrapping devolution, onbviouslt Westminster would have more reforms to make things better. It's an obviously idealistic pipe dream because our politicians will never agree to the changes that many people want. I mean, give up their chance of a seat in the Lords, face closer scrutiny.... On Farage, the bloke has become a parody of himself. Until he saw sense (from a leave point of view) or someone explained it to him, he could actually have been the cause of stopping brexit. He's gone past ridiculous and is approaching bizarre.

Remember John Major and b*stardgate. Early 1990s Maastricht Treaty stuff. And before that Mrs Thatch being so anti EMU and the exchange rate policy of shadowing the DM/Ecu. That Little Englander streak has been in the Tories for a long time. If you really want to go wide, consider all the casual racism in TV comedy well before that. Alf Garnett, Love thy neighbour. Racism in Britain is thinly and widely spread, at least in middle aged people and upwards. Question whether the recent Brexit demand merely taps into this or engages a wider, younger demographic too. The thing about politicans is, they aren't really little englanders, they don't care about most of England, just their little corner. The South East/London is Mega City One, anything outside their zone is the Cursed Earth, if you'll pardon the Judge Dredd analogy.

Farage being eviscerated by Neil on 11:40 - Dec 6 with 2066 views | Best_loser | This election is different, this is not the old tory party, it's become ukip, the moderates have left, it's now an English nationalist party They will consolidate their position by moving around constituency lines Scotland will leave the UK The labour party will be finished It will be tory rule for years and years and years You think they will care about wales, they just see us as an annex So, to best them it will probably have to be a new party that emerges, a centrist party made up of ex labour moderates and the lib dems, focused on tnew ideas appealing to young people, the Tories are a dinosaur party, most of their voters are dinosaurs A new party could see to it that in 5 years time it will be the last ever tory government Cos the next 5 years will be a nightmare

I think it has gone beyond that mentality even. I have grave concerns this is pretty fundamental right wing politics we have seen from the GOP in the US. Completely libertarian beyond a basic state. I genuinely think unless you are on a 50K plus income you are going to be working two jobs soon to meet basic requirements in life. No fall back. Unless you can pay forget it.

I was reading about pensions recently, the estimate was that a couple needed to have enough saved to provide pension income of 47k a year if they wanted a good retirement but if they were happy to just muddle along 29k would do, after taxes. Our household income after tax is more than 30k and we do slightly better than muddle along but if the NHS were privatised, because of our long standing health problems we'd never afford insurance so we'd never get the meds we need, we'd both probably be dead in less than 5 years, our son has asthma and a severe nut allergy, every day is a lottery now with him carrying epi pens, if he couldn't afford insurance or the meds his odds go very short for an early death. There is already a two tier health system in the UK, those with the money can get their operation done in weeks where the NHS queue is literally years. I don't think giving free prescriptions to everybody regardless of their financial situation is helping. These universal benefits, why do we give millionaires free stuff?

I agree. This is a whole new level of dangerous. This election could be a genuine watershed moment in the direction we take as a country (we're already seen Boris et al try to shut down Parliament and subvert the courts). If they get a majority they'll be free to do so, and implement an extreme free market policy. Brexit is simply a means to an end that makes is possible.

I am a high earner as I am pretty near the top of my career and likely will have decent pension (though not what it could have been).... like your son I have asthma and would probably have to pay a lot in insurance, though arguably I would gain far more in tax cuts. But, and this is a big but, I am not prepared to make others pay for greater wealth. I was brought up in a single parent family. We were far from well off, but society in the 70s and 80s allowed me to get qualifications and go to university without cost. I have worked (I did my PhD whilst working) for 30 years. Incredibly hard at time-80 hour weeks as a researcher to get where I am. I believe everyone needs this chance. Its already an uneven playing field-(Treorchy Comprehensive V Merchant Taylor's) to get on in life. We should have a good health and education system, irrespective of your bak account. Equally, we as society should have an obligation to contribute as best we can. This seems to have been lost in the UK- I still see it in places like Denmark when I travel. I will be voting Labour next week. I dislike Corbyn and many of his policies, but I don't want us to sell what was hard earned in the first half of the 20th century. A Johnson government, would I believe, take us back to the 1930s.

Is it islamaphobia to be afraid of terrorism. Phobia is an irrational fear of something. I think it is perfectly reasonable to be afraid after terrorists attacks in the UK in the last ten years.
