Is Europe turning ? on 13:18 - Dec 11 by AnotherJohn | This came out of a 2022 Labour Party Report prepared under the leadership of Gordon Brown. The Council was intended to improve communication between the devolved administrations and the UK Government, and originally entitled "The Council of the UK".. It is described on a Gov.UK webpage as a " forum that brings together governments and authorities with devolved responsibilities to determine actions for tackling some of the biggest and most cross-cutting challenges the country faces, on a structured and sustained basis." Note "the country" in singular form, meaning the UK. The Council was created by political decision rather than legislation, so there is still no legal constitutional basis for describing the territories overseen by the devolved administrations as nations. This is why political commentators call the forum a "quasi intergovernmental body. of the United Kingdom". Presumably, if there were an Act of establishment, somebody would have to decide whether N. Ireland was a nation or region, but this is deliberately left vague. Basically the current title of the forum is a sop to the nationalists that just adds to the terminological confusion about what are home countries and what are nation states. |
Whats its name again ? [Post edited 11 Dec 16:06]

Is Europe turning ? on 17:45 - Dec 10 by Kilkennyjack | Wales, England and Scotland are all nations within the political sovereign state entity of United Kingdom. They are nations. Ireland is a nation. Northern Ireland is a man made entity that has only existed 100 years. Currently that is part of the United Kingdom. The people will decide its future. |
You say man made entity as if it is somehow wrong, you surely realise that ALL countries are man made entities? Humans created borders. Go on, confirm you understand this?

Well it was gerrymandered wasnt it ? If we went with the whole island of Ireland vote, then there would have been no Northern Ireland. David Lloyd George agreed to the partition of Ireland to pacify Unionists in the north. Michael Collins only agreed to this proposal as it provided ‘the freedom to achieve freedom’. And avoided the British threats to visit a terrible war upon ireland if it did not agree. This cost Michael Collins his life. So never a nation, always an occupation on the island of Ireland. Its amazing that the built in unionist majority is wobbling, and a united Ireland is now inevitable. The only question left is …. When ?

Before Henry II invaded the island of Ireland on the orders of the Pope Ireland had never been unified. Like wales it was a smorgasbord of petty kingdoms and tribes who enjoyed nothing more than knocking the shit out of each other for hundreds of years. If anything it was the Angevin occupation that brought unity to that island that had never been seen before.

But shirley ….. how they lived is only strange when compared to an Anglo-Germanic royalty type norm. A bit like the native Americans, who lived differently. Its just different, its not inherently inferior. A nation can fight within, row, and lack a single leader, but it does not make it less of a nation. Just different. Shared languages, shared cultures, and …. a people are no less worthy than another people. Who is the judge ?

It was the Normans that first "invaded" what was called Ireland. They were invited by the deposed King of Leinster in an attempt to regain his lands. Leinster was one of the five kingdoms on the Ireland of Ireland. Funny how the myth evolved that it was the nasty English that invaded a peaceful United Ireland when in fact Ireland consisted of many warring kingdoms.

There was very little that was English about the kings of that period. Most were born in France, spoke French, spent most of their time in France then died in France. Their main concern was protecting their lands in France from the French king whom they owed fealty to. No doubt a campaign in Ireland would have been viewed as an expensive and unnecessary pursuit with very little reward. There was no wealth there, no real resources. Given the choice they’d probably rather stay away but in the 12th century if the Pope says bend over you have to get on all fours.

Nobody said it was inferior, nobody said they were not worthy. Joesus just pointed out a fact to you, it wasn't a unified nation, it was always a group of "tribes" who were constantly fighting wars with each other. Go back to then and tell those tribes and their leaders that they were one people and the answer you'd have gotten wouldn't have been pleasant, the pointy end of a sword possibly, maybe an axe in the head. They hated each other as did the various warring tribes of Wales, not even the Romans managed to unify Wales into one people against them. In the modern countries the people are no less divided these days we just don't wander round in tribal groups killing each other.

Well thats half sensible. But your story was starting to sound a bit like the superior white man bringing his vision of civilisation to Africa, and if the African people would not accept being civilised then violence would be visited upon them to make them think again. However I am fully reassured by your first sentence.

Africa was never mentioned mun Though it is true that even quite recently African tribes have rampaged around killing each other. It's the human condition, it's easier to hate and fight than to love and support each other. The politicians love it, it makes it easy for them to divide and conquer.

He doesn’t like facts. Like the undeniable fact that poor defenceless non colonial and vulnerable Africa has produced some of the largest, wealthiest and most vicious empires in history.

Cannibalism, human sacrifice and domestic slavery was widespread in certain areas of the continent at the time. If another culture has traditions that we in our culture find completely abhorrent should we just let them get on with it for fear of being called racist? Or should we speak out against it and try to stop it? For example today as I type this there are hundreds of millions of females living in this world who as a little girl was forced to go into a room and have a man mutilate their genitals, cutting off their sensitive areas and doing god knows what else causing them a lifetime of medical issues, pain and suffering. This happens predominantly in Africa but also in parts of Asia. It’s part of their culture. Any reasonable person in 21st century Britain would (or should) be utterly repulsed by the idea of such a practise. Some may say it’s uncivilised to do such a thing to such young girls. But in certain parts of the world it’s common place and expected, even celebrated. Does that make us superior? Culturally, morally, ethically it absolutely does. Not because of race or skin colour etc. but because of actions and beliefs.
