He was an arrogant autocrat who got to a position of power in the EU without ever being elected. His decision to impose a budget in France without any democratic mandate has backfired. France has a huge National debt greater than its annual GDP and is paying high interest rates to finance it.

They may have to run with a repeat of the 2024 Budget, deeper into the mire and more even pain needed to recover the position.

There is hardly a country on the planet that isn't in debt and we all owe money to each other, we all own the debts from other countries, it has to be a scam. Where does all the interest go? A large chunk of UK national debt is owed to the Bank of England. It just seems like a massive scam to me.

That’s true. There are only a handful who have no national debt and every one of those countries you wouldn’t want to live in.

Not quite correct Norway"s National debt is 42% of its GDP although it is falling every year. It has huge gas and oil reserves and exports nearly all of it. It produces 90% of its electricity from hydroelectric as the rest from wind and geothermal. It is a twice as large as the UK with a population of just 5 million. It also benefits from not being in the EU as the EU needs it's gas and oil. [Post edited 6 Dec 8:52]

Yeah, given the state of things Labour needs to change it's thinking, open up new oil fields to give our GDP a boost. Give out licenses that favour this country. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Not strange at all. An independent Wales and Scotland could not service the debt with the huge subsidies they gey from the UK . What currencies would they use. If they stick with Stirling it will be the BOE that set their interests rates. If they adopt the Euro it would be Brussels who set their interests rates. Either way they would not be independent. You also forgot 80% of the Welsh population don't want independence and 56% of the Scottish population don't want independence either. Strange how you try to force your minority views on the majority who have made their democratic decisions.

No it's not strange and I do believe it's a rich and powerful scam run by ruling elites. Thing is it can be scam or not, it still makes it exponentially harder for a country like Wales to go indy when we would already owe a lot of money as soon as we voted for indy. Put bluntly, and assuming the figures given abpve are correct (re guilts) then Wales cannot raise the 23 billion it needs (which the Senedd already says isn't enough) and just the interest of the 15% of UK debt is 17 billion, add in an amount to pay the capital sum off and we are already bankrupt before we start. Mind you, Iceland went bankrupt and it hasn't really seemed to harm them so crack on. Lets have an indy Wales that goes bankrupt straight away and start entirely from scratch. Then all those corporate clowns can pay their taxes here, it might just work. What's the worst thing that can happen....all our EFL clubs sent to play Welsh league!

Unfortunately only 20% of Welsh people want independence the other 80% know that are better off as part of the UK.

It's hardly unfortunate. The thing that really needs changing is the government system, do away with Royalty and the Lords and have a republican system. Not like the USA though, they based their system on the ancient Roman Senate so it was bound to fail. Rome fell largely because of corruption, it took over 1700 years for Rome to fall though, less than 250 years in and the USA is already a stinking cess pit of corruption.

The founding fathers absolutely did take a lot of elements from the Roman republic in terms of architecture and other decorative features and designed Washington DC specifically in the image of Rome (and Athens) but politically the main influences relating to the constitution were nearly entirely British in origin, namely the English bill of rights, the Scottish claim of rights and Magna Carta.

Its an established fact of International law that debt cannot be taken out on behalf of a people but without the specific consent of the people. Russia tried it to debt load Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Russia tried to bring them to heel by giving them soviet debt. Thrown out of court. So wales would be debt free if UK tried to force the matter. Instead you might think that friendly neighbours would work something out. As i am sure you will know Ireland and the UK did this in 1925. Of course the assets of the UK are also part of a civilised exit. Its mad to think that you have so little respect for the uk that you think they would use debt to block a democratic path to indy. Its like a drunk gambling violent husband telling his lovely wife that she cant leave him cos of his self created debt !

Well they avoided the huge embarrassment of Prince Charles being best mates with Jimmy Savile and Prince Andrew being best mates with one Jeffrey Epstein. I really dont know what else to say on the matter. I do know the royal advisors have failed by any measure.

Not sure where you got your misinformation from. Lastest polls show only 22% of people in Wales want independence. I do wish you check facts first instead of just making them up. Plaid Cymru only managed to get 14.8 % of votes in Wales in the last general election putting them in 4th place behind Labour, Conservative, and Reform. It is an undeniable fact the people of Wales don't want independence. That is not going away either.

The problem with that is that the Baltic states didn't want that debt but Wales accepts that debt, we gave the government the mandate when we elected them and the Welsh government doubled down on that permission by constantly demanding Westminster should give us more, the only way to get more is to increase the debt. The Baltic states didn't elect the Russian government. W elected those in Westminster, can you see the difference?

If it actually did reach 1 in 3 it has since dropped quite a bit. March 2023, support for independence dropped to its lowest level since 2019 at 18%; the drop was potentially attributed to the prospect of a Labour UK government and now we have that, maybe it's even lower than 18%, that's not even 1 in 5.
