As you may be aware Led Zeppelin are being sued by the family of former Spirit guitar player Randy California claiming they copied his song Taurus in the famous and very lucrative Stairway to Heaven.
Have a look at this for instance..
So my question is guilty or not guilty?
And yes before any smart alec chimes in I know they have previous in this respect but I'm genuinely interested in what the guitarists on here make of it....

Too stoned to realise someone else had already come up with their ideas.
Any nirvana fans ever listened to a scottish band called the vaselines? They predate nirvana by quite a few years.
Randy C must have been stoned too if it took him this long to spot the rip off
If you can fill the unforgiving minute.
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Back to the OP - I'm surprised anyone can say it's a coincidence. The phrasing, melody and timing are the same - Jimmy Page simply and skillfully embellished it with and additional ascending melody line. I wonder why it's taken so long for this to get as far as it has now because I definitely read about this over a decade ago.

Plant stole his singing style too...
How long until a celebrity sues a lookalike for stealing his likeness? Be interesting. Come down to age I suppose. If the lookalike was older he could sue the younger guy for plagiarism. Or something.
And what is good Phaedrus, and what is not good. Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?

I wrote a song that bore a striking similarity initially to Alabama by Neil Young. I had never heard that song. How could I have plagiarised it?
I can play five chords on the guitar and when I put them in a certain order it sounds like 'Hey Joe'. I've heard it before though so did I plagiarise it?

If you tweaked the order a little to sound like 'Hey Jude' you'd probably make more money ;-)

It's virtually impossible to copyright a chord sequence...
