Hornets game 11:49 - Jan 17 with 28887 viewsonedalefan

Called off due to snow making the surrounding area unsafe and taking conditions of people travelling into account.Says that the pitch is rated 50/50 to play but would take time to move the snow. Would suggest they were still thinking of playing even after yesterday.

A year or two back we were due to play St Helens in a pre season friendly There had been a frost on Saturday night. The club called in the match referee early that morning . He decided the pitch was un playable. The usual bit in front of the main stand was frozen.

According to you we could have ignored him and played then ? Presumably without a referee.

I did a bit of reffing many years ago and I recall calling a Boxing Day soccer match off because of the pitch condition after about 20 minutes. The players didn't carry on without me.

Leave the ball behind next time then.

You don't need to be smarter than Mr Dunphy to know whether he's right or wrong letting Hornets play at Spotland?

Really?

Why don't you go and tell him so?

He'd wipe the floor with you.

Vespa, the phrase "He'd wipe the floor with you" and Chris Dunphy should never be seen in the same post, and shows that you know absolutely nothing of the man.

Your posts are nothing but blather, and if your outlook is typical of an Hornets fan then no wonder the club is in such an awful mess. Please feel free to post something worthwhile that actually contributes to the debate; you have yet to do so.

Where do you get the impression that Hornets are in a mess ? Since the formation of the Hornets Co-op things have gone relatively smoothly for a club playing at our level. We've been promoted and only got relegated because the RL decided in their infinite wisdom to re- structure our league and relegated five teams !

We've just appointed a new up and coming young coach and we're looking forward to the new season.

I used to watch both teams, now I only watch one. It was that attitude of some ' Dale fans towards Hornets that led me to make that decision.

When, or if, the negotiations to 'own' Spotland are complete, I hope the Dale directors remember what Hornets did a week last Sunday and keep that firmly in mind when it comes to dealing with Hornets' request to continue using the ground.

Makes you wonder what caused that attitude to manifest itself.

As previously posted, I've been a supporter of Hornets and watched them home and away in the past so don't lump me in with being a "Hornets hater".

Any sporting venture whose future depends on the outcome of a negotiated settlement to which they have no input is, by definition, in a mess. I'd like to see that settlement include Hornets remaining at Spotland, paying their way according to the terms of the settlement but having respect for the rights of the football club to have the playing surface maintained to an acceptable standard.

Right now, they're failing, and the efforts of the players and coach have become an irrelevance.

Furthermore, to stop supporting a football team because of the perceived attitude of some supporters is nothing short of pathetic.

People stop supporting teams for all sorts of reasons. That's mine. I just got tired of the abuse Hornets, and by definition, Hornets supporters got. I'm just a fan with no real means of altering what has gone on in the past. So I voted with my feet. I used to take my son as well but he doesn't go any more either. You may be open minded about the situation regarding Hornets but lots on here are not. As I understand it a deal has been done. Let's hope both side adhere to the agreement. From what I read on here I'm not very confident that will happen.

But the views and opinions of those who post on here won't have any tangible impact on whether both Dale and Hornets stick to their obligations.

I know I'd like Dale to stick to theirs, but that has surely got to preclude any activity which causes serious damage to the playing surface, whether playing matches during adverse weather conditions or training on it.

I wonder what has 'closed the minds' of many Dale supporters??!!
The ground sharing idea is fine, so long as both clubs have equal regard to maintaining a good surface for both sports. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the case at Spotland.

Surely the pitch is either fit to play or not, on any given day. I've never heard of any game being called off on the grounds of future, potential damage.

An interesting point of view. Let's hope the revenue gained from playing will offset the massive failure in goodwill that will be required in the future.

You seem to be very confused. IT WAS A FRIENDLY!
There was no need to consult a referee, they could have simply accepted the request from the groundstaff that the pitch was unable to take another game and called the match off, the fact that a referee was involved in the decision simply amplifies that Hornets wanted to hide behind someone else's decision "it was playable, the Ref said so - it's not our fault.". Hornets being Hornets wanted the money and decided to play anyway and bugger up the pitch - no thought for their ground sharers, no thought about long term consequences for the pitch, just another example of Hornet's selfish attitude and rank contempt for everyone else.

It wasn't future damage though - it was present damage that means the pitch is now ruined for future games.

But you can't introduce arbitrary criteria. Dale fans would never sanction any rugby match. That's the real issue.

How do we know it's ruined for the rest of the season ? Let's wait and before making such sweeping statements.

On another issue when did Hornets last train on the pitch ? As far as I know for the years that we were in partnership with St Helens we trained there. This season we're in partnership with Warrington and all the training takes place there. The facilities for rugby players need to be different than the facilities required for soccer players, more work with weights etc.

Given our guys are part timers and train at night and Saturday morning it would be a bit difficult to " sneak " into the ground.

DDB hasn't said 'for the rest of the season'. Let's get our facts right before making such incorrect statements.

And by saying 'last train on the pitch' you're admitting they have done in the past - and at times when I know for a fact they were told NOT to.

Hope it snows all Saturday night!! I believe the friendly that went ahead should never have been played - it was surely obvious to those 'in charge' of making the decision that any game, played that day, would have ruined the surface for the rest of the season - for both codes.

How strange. Do you have credentials as a groundsman? Yet the outfit you support were prepared to dismiss the advice of professional groundsmen. As some stage, the word "professional" needs to be given consideration.
