Had a good run in the England team but very much past his sell by date. Mind you he is not on his own. The defence was shambolic and I don't think I have ever seen Hart make so many positional mistakes from corners.

Gerrard was utter garbage tonight. At fault for both goals and offered nothing. Rooney was England's best player by a country mile ahead of Cahill and Henderson who are the only other two who can hold their head up high tonight.

Agree with you about Gerard and Rooney. Didn't think Cahill was confident, doesn't help having Jagielka next to him and I thought Henderson was clueless tonight doesn't offer enough going forward or creatively

Cahill was doing the work of Jagileka as well and the amount of blocks and tackles he put in was really impressive.

Similar for Henderson, he doesn't offer anything offensively but he was playing the deeper role with Gerrard and having to cover him as well.

Stevie G has often dragged the England team out of trouble almost single-handedly. Let's not start assassinating him on the basis of a single game.

Fair point with Cahill, Henderson for me isn't strong enough playing the deeper role, his thought process is slightly too slow for me.

I think though part of the problem so far has been the fact that Sterling, Wellbeck are very green internationally and on the whole are easily dealt with. A bit more muscle and nous needed

No, but he's been poor in both games now. However, he hasn't been helped by being asked to play his Liverpool role within a side that gives him few passing options ahead of him.

I disagree. He's done that for Liverpool but very rarely for England. The last Englishman I saw do that regularly was David Beckham.

Not to worry. B Teams in League Three will fix everything.

Gerrard's effectiveness was in his ability to play box to box. When asked to lie deep, all he does is pass to the wingbacks. Might as well've taken Matty Lund.

I'm not here to criticise Gerrard. I thought he was unlucky with the header that led to their winner - but the Uruguayan who jumped in front of him knew what he was doing, and after that there was only one conclusion.

To sum up: we've bloody naive.

I can understand where you're coming from.

The thing is, Suarez will have given his coach and team-mates the complete picture on how to stop Gerrard doing what he does for Liverpool. Gerrard's not world class, so it worked.

Suarez is world class, and whatever anyone thinks about his character, he was so clinical it didn't matter whether any of the Liverpool squad briefed against him.

I'm not disappointed, I think we did as well as can be expected.

Above all, I'm pleased Rooney got a tap in, so we can all shut the f*ck up about him not having scored in the world cup finals. I'm sure his grandkids will be pleased too.

Suarez's character, for all it's shortcomings, is the character of a winner. He wanted to win that game more than all of England's players combined.

We all knew this was going to happen so no disappointment here either. As soon as we as Englishmen understand our place in world football the better, and we stop heaping this world class tag on run of the mill English players. We have some ok players, nothing more....Woy should fill the side with the youngsters for the next game but he won't. Because he is yet another in a long line of boring old farts (much like myself) That the FA seem to like in charge of the England side......

I keep hearing/reading how much Suarez wanted it as if the England players didn't. Not sure on people's criteria for judging this. From what I gather from years of listening to moaning sods is either being really, really good or running around shouting at people and crashing in to challenges (Gary Jones anyone?).

I dont agree that we should "understand our place in world football better" except in the sense of using that understanding to improve things. I personally would not have taken Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard or anyone else that has experienced failure at a previous world cups, I suspect they have failed and realised that their lives have been relatively unaffected by that failure and therefore they have no real fear of failure this time around. Failure is corrosive and we can't seem to break the cycle.

Taking a squad of young players with the potential to be highly competitive in 4 years time would have been my preferred option with the understanding that we did not expect them to progress past the group stage. Our U21s seem to have a reasonable history of relative success but too few seem to progress to the senior squad unlike many other countries that operate a conveyor belt through their junior to senior national squads.

Why the aggression?

I just thought by 'we Englishmen' you meant everyone who's English. I think most of us on here are extremely realistic about the England team and their chances at this World Cup. It's the media and all the World Cup W*****s with faces painted and silly hats who get carried away.

No aggression at all, it just gets seriously tiresome when all you hear is how good we are and how our players are world class. We are not world class and have not been for some considerable time. There are certain pundits who should know better, all who are English who drone on about Stevie G, he's the man to sort it out.....Don't worry Stevie G will inspire the lads, he couldn't inspire anyone, did you listen to his press conference a couple of days ago? My god he could put a glass eye to sleep....He's by far not the only one though as stated above by another poster there were at few that should not even be in the squad as they have had their time, they have done nothing but failed. The simple fact that we have the slimmest of chances of still qualifying will give Roy the excuse to stick with the old guard yet again instead of blooding all the young uns....I ask myself this question, are the youngsters in the squad world class or could they become world class in another 4 years....? Would any of them get into the good squads in this tournament? Pessimistic it may be but I just don't see it.....I hope to be proved wrong..

Poll: Hill in or out? 2nd referendum.....
