LFW Travel Guides — Wolves, Molineux

QPR are back on the road next weekend when the boys travel to the West Midlands to face Wolves at Molineux. The usual travel guide for visiting fans follows…

Ground Name: Molineux

Capacity: 28 300 (all seated)

Address: Waterloo Road, Wolverhampton, WV1 4QR

Main Telephone No: 0870 441 0123

Ticket Office: AS ABOVE

By Car

It’s a 130 mile trip this one, up the M40 and M5 or the M1 and M6 depending on what part of London you are travelling from. If you go up the M6 then leave at Junction 10 and travel into Wolverhampton on the A454. When you reach the ring road turn right and then at the second set of lights look for signs for football parking or continue to follow the road round and look for the ground on the right. If you go the other way follow the M40 onto the M42 and then the M5 south of Birmingham. Head north on the M5 to Junction 2 after Frackley Services then take the first exit at the roundabout onto the A4123. Follow that for the best part of eight miles into the middle of Wolverhampton then turn right onto the A4150 Wolverhampton ring road which should bring you around to the ground. Speed cameras all over the shop.

Parking

Limited parking all over the place, it's a bit of a poor place for a football match actually this. There is limited parking at the ground, follow directions above, failing that inside the ring road in the city centre there are numerous pay and displays including one at the city hall. Don't expect it to be easy or cheap to find. Park outside the centre on the street somewhere and walk in would be my advice - but do so at your own risk, they may make tyres round here but that doesn't mean they won't fancy some of yours as well.

By Train

There are regular direct trains between London and Wolves from Euston with Virgin, however the price of these trips may encourage you to look elsewhere. An advance booking on two single tickets leaving at 1123 and arriving at 1311 then coming back at 1745 and arriving back at 1934 is currently £38 and a walk up and pay on the day return is £45.80.

However there are other options. The newly re-opened Chiltern service from Marylebone to Snow Hill is doing some seriously cheap deals – off peak day returns are available for £25 to Birmingham Snow Hill with local train services or trams available from there up to Wolves for a nominal fee. There are also slower London Midland services from Euston up to New Street going cheap too.

The ground is easily walkable from the station. You can either leave the station and walk straight towards the city centre then when you reach the inner ring road turn right and walk around until you come to the ground. Failing that follow the covered walkway towards the city centre, walk past the Varsity pub and then go under the subway under the ring road to the ground. Some like to avoid the subway on high profile match days, it has been a bit tasty in the past! Ten or fifteen minutes top whack.

By Coach

The club coach has limited places left leaving Loftus Road at 9.30am and the Target roundabout at 10am. Tickets are priced £26 adults, £16 seniors and young adults and £14 juniors with £2 discounts for season ticket holders. The LSA is running three coaches to this one leaving The Springbok at 9am with a stop at the Target roundabout – one of the three coaches will use the M1 with a further pick up at Scratchwood services. Call Gary on 07506 028 189 to book, costs are £25 adults and £15 concessions. Message board poster Antoknee64 is also arranging a car pool up there and looking for people to share petrol costs – PM him via this message board thread.

Where to drink

Slim pickings I'm afraid. The Great Western behind the station is in the guide, real ale and all that, but I'm really not happy recommending any pubs in Wolverhampton for use by away fans because I'm yet to find one where they don't treat you like scum. No colours if you are chancing it. For those going into Birmingham and out again on the train I'd advise drinking there and heading out late. The Wellington is very close by and has a massive selection of beers, lagers and ales on sale.

Match Tickets

There are building works going on at Molineux at the moment which is restricting away capacity and QPR have already sold out of their 1,258 allocation.
