Absolutely bizarre scenes in the Oval Office today, staggering.
Trump and his VP clearly had a plan to ambush him, but to do it so publicly was bad form.

Trump telling Zelensky off for wanting to reply but said hadn't been given the opportunity. Trump berated Zelensky very loudly by way of response.

I hope all Americans will be ashamed but I think they are generally OK with this behaviour and attitudes by their leaders.

It was frightening on many levels, but was just plain and simple bog standard school playground bullying !!

I’ve already seen on social media plenty of Americans who are totally on Trump and Vance’s side and plenty not. It really divided the country.
Those in favour are coming from the “close the borders, stop immigration, MAGA, we need to sort ourselves out first before helping others” etc.
Plenty in the UK feel the same here.
Thing is, Trump is trying to do both by pretending to ‘help others’ when what he really means is selling. He doesn’t do charity, he does deals and deals that are to his benefit, “we’ll help you if you hand over all your resources”. It’s why businessmen/women shouldn’t be Presidents.

Trump and Zelensky were always going to have a problem, but Vance seemed to me the one who ultimately blew it up.

Lecturing Zelensky about diplomacy when one of them has spent the last 3 years at war and the other, who's never set foot in the country he's so clear eyed about, has been focused on his career.

And to then start ranting on about thankfulness. He could have kept his comments low key and made a dignified statement about Zelensky's tone afterwards.

Would have been a lot less incendiary, but he's too busy wanting to rim his boss to bother thinking about the geopolitical consequences.

Pretty fair post here but the far biggest reason Americans back Trump here simply comes down to the fact Zelensky has been playing the most corupt president in US history (Biden ) for 4 years and they are sick of it.
Zelensky was in the room back in 2014 when Biden forced Ukraine to fire a proscuter investagating his druggie non qualified son on tape or they would withold funds and he was fired .
Trump was impeached during his term for a phone call asking Zelensky to check out the shady deals with the Bidens but he never once came clean while Trump got crushed .
Zelensky and his wife live in the lap of luxury and he comes over to America and stands in front of Congress (dressed like he is walking his dog btw) and berates the US for not doing enough when they have sent so much weaponry and cash its unacountable and of predictably lost
Of course the US population have the right to close their borders and put America first every country in the World does that.
There is a new sheriff in town half the population loves him the other half hate him but make no mistake after that dithering fool Biden this President is no pushover

The irony is that the people who tend to agree with trump and trump himself, would be the last people to be happy if the boot was on the other foot.

If Mexico annexed Florida and started attacking Texas, would he accept just letting them keep the territory in the name of peace? Would similar minded people in the UK be happy with France taking Kent?

All the while Russia's aggression is not directly effecting them, it's easy to ignore that and concentrate on what does effect them, which is the financial aspect of supporting Ukraine. But it's quite possibly cheaper in the long run to support Ukraine to stop Russia earlier rather than let them become emboldened to do more. They're already entering our airspace regularly and damaging other countries infrastructure in the north sea.

I would suggest that the public ambush was pre planned. Seemingly Trump doesn’t want to fund the Ukraine to the same extent that Biden did.

Be interesting to see how the European Leaders react to this, still unilaterally supporting the Ukraine without the support of the USA?

"Seemingly Trump doesn’t want to fund the Ukraine to the same extent that Biden did".

I think the problem is that in politics, and in business too, a person who carries on doing what their predecessor did rarely gets any credit for doing so, even if it's still the right thing to do.

Trump only cares about himself, which compounds the problem.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

I think it actually just illustrated the divides that were already there. This is doubling down. If you loved Trump before, you love this approach. If you hated Trump before you hated this approach

Let’s say Zelensky did play Biden and Trump decided not to have any of that, just pick up the phone and say “you’re not getting away with that with me, no more gravy train”
But no, he deliberately set it up to publicly humiliate him.

If Jules Winnfield (Pulp Fiction) starts to quote you Ezekiel 25:17, you’re dead
If Putin’s henchmen start taking you to the top floor of a hospital, you’re about to accidentally fall out of a window
If Trump asks you to appear on live TV, he’s about to humiliate you

Graham was going on about not discussing certain things in the meeting before the resources deal was signed but if the meeting was not to discuss such matters then what was it for?

The problem we now is that Trumps politics of division and deviceness have given him a mandate to
rule with impunity.
The Republicans will take note when selecting their next leader . Probably more of the same . It’s working for them now and it will work for them again.
It was clearly orchestrated and choreographed from the minute the meeting started .
The first question being . Where’s your suit? Mr Zelenksky.
Emboldened by his thug in chief , Vance . They went for him .
Shameful and embarrassing.
Ironic that America is basically European immigrants from 300 years back and now both continents more divided than ever.
The US economy is the only thing that could derail Trump .
It could well happen though .
Let’s see where we are then.

Agree with this except nothing is going to derail Trump he is on his last legs/ term but to the horror of every single poster on this thread Vance is going to be the next Republican candidate .If The Democrats run Harris again they will get crushed and Vance could serve 2 terms.
One last but critical bit of information and probably only available to US posters is the fact Biden or whoever was running the country in Nov 2024 approved the use of long range missiles to strike inside Russia from Ukraine .The frightening fact was they were manned and released by trained US soldiers basically meant the US was attacking Russia and thats the way it was read by Russia .
Trump wants peace ,Europe wants peace and I suspect both warring parties want peace so lets get everybody around a big table and work it out forget the rest of the saber rattling bullsh*t
1
Trump v Zelensky on 20:43 - Mar 1 with 1088 viewsJuzzie

I agree about the US missile thing, that was worrying, but I don’t agree Trump wants ‘peace’ per see. He wants money, resources etc etc and ‘peace’ is just the leverage. He will agree to any kind of ‘leverage’ just as long as it gets him what he wants.

If he really wanted peace why didn’t he allow Vance to answer Zelensky’s question about defining diplomacy? That surely is part of trying to fathom out peace.

As far as people here being worried about Vance, aren’t you?

Ah, I see the name calling has already begun, accompanied with quite shocking grammar.

A quote from the admin of this forum, Mr NorthernR, from a while ago:

"And I'll offer a little bit of 'advice' of my own at this point.

After some initial really interesting discussion from across the spectrum, both threads have now descended down through the bit where everybody who holds the opposite view is either Hitler or a Communist, into some really quite nasty, personal stuff.

It's exactly why I used to just delete these threads and say go elsewhere for that. I've relaxed it this summer on trust, and initially it's produced some really interesting stuff which I've enjoyed reading, but I'm not having the direction both these threads are going now.

...

Everybody here is a QPR fan. We support the same club, we sit in the same stadium, we drink in the same pubs. We think differently about a whole range of issues, and that's okay - people are entitled to hold different views.

The rhetoric gets dialed down now.
We treat each other with respect whether we agree or not.
We remember we're all QPR here together.

Otherwise I'm going to start deleting and locking threads, banning accounts, and if I end up here by myself, well after 20 years I don't give a toss."
