It was an ambush, it was bullying, but I think we’re missing the point here.
Zelensky is a proud man, the Ukrainians are a proud and brave people, you cannot fault their resolve in all of this but, as Trump says, they cannot win without US support and for too long now European countries attitude to defending themselves has been absolutely shameful.
Truth is, Britain is the only Western European place that is, albeit reluctantly, finally showing a minor commitment to increase its GDP spend on defence. France are showing some willing but history says that won’t amount to much, Italy just laugh in your face and Spain reluctant to play any part. The Germans have lost the will to commit to anything.
Trump knows, as soon as he commits to being a backstop, Western Europe and indeed Starmers fine words on increasing defence will once again be just that, words, and they’ll collectively go back to doing nothing and relying on the Americans. This has to change.
The West has become weak, it will capitulate to anything. Sadly, we need someone to bang our heads together. That time has come.
Have to be careful what you say these days, but a strong US in some form of power pact with other super powers may be the only way to preserve the lifestyle in Western Europe for our grandchildren that my generation has taken for granted. |  | | |

I think Starmer is playing a blinder. We have to keep the orange buffoon onside for as long as possible. Our nuclear defences and Air Force is almost totally dependent on American supplies and support. We have to take what we can off them in the short term whilst arming ourselves to the teeth as quickly as possible.
The French and Germans know this too and with the Poles, Scandinavians and Dutch on board we have a strong backbone that should be able to resist anything Putin throws at us. Interesting to see how that traitorous little weasel Farage comes out of this. He's trump's number one little glove puppet and by extension, Putin's

As people have said on here it was a total set up for the benefit of the Russian state.
They allowed some one from Russian state media in on the dressing down. Then when it was pointed out that they probably shouldn't be there, there was a quick statement that says 'oh yeah we have removed this person.'
I mean, I imagine the security levels for these events are pretty tight. But somehow some one from Russian state media was present?
It all stinks and I fear for what is to come in the future.
Trump may think he is behaving in a way that makes America strong and that they will benefit from it but actually they will get nothing from this in the end. Can completely understand why you'd want to avoid politics on here and that's a totally understandable perspective.
However...It's hard to find a political forum which isn't an echo chamber because naturally you're going to gravitate to something which shares similar views and beliefs to your own. Like coming onto a QPR site to talk about QPR - I don't expect anyone here not to have a vested interest or pro-QPR bias, and not should they.
So personally as long as they are done respectfully, kept into the intended threads, and without anything that's going to get Clive in trouble/cause a hassle (and this obviously is where we often go wrong), I personally really appreciate the opportunity to have exposure here to people with a cross section of viewpoints on subjects that I might not otherwise see. It can on occasion help see things from another person's perspective and I feel like if we all did more of that we might all be a bit less angry. Maybe. |

Once Trump dies, no one will ever want Vance anywhere near them. He's finished, totally gone.

Zelensky now realises he has something the Yanks want and a new backstop ... the Euro nations as they are gonna ramp up the military. Thats why he did not bend the knee to Trump.
You see, what Trump has not considered is that Zels can ask the Euros for help and, in exchange, offer his tasty minerals (geddit?). So, if at that point the USA drops out, the Euros step in. That is why the Euros are being nice and playful with Trump, bumping up the defence money; they are waiting until he makes a mistake, and then they will step in to take over the deal.
If most of the Euros are subject to tariffs, they will welcome this offer from Zels, as then they can sell those minerals to the USA (with the tariffs added on). This will drive the tech bro oligarchy over there super mad. Worse, they can sell them to China and really make Trump mad too.
In addition, if the UK gets a deal, then the EU can sell to the UK (we get a 5% markup, which is cheaper than 25% import tax) and he cannot impose tariffs afterwards as we have a deal that he signed. He won't think that part through and we will take them to the cleaners on that.
Minerals and tariff dodging by the Euros answers the question of ... "but the European countries don't have the money", well they will when they take the minerals deal instead of Trump and they also get to turn around and say ... "well you asked us to put more money into defence and you said you would not interfere with how we spend it on Euro issues just as long as we invested in it and you ended support for Ukraine".
Trump will be livid, but by then, the idiot will have said so many stupid things about Zels and Ukraine that he will be out in the cold. Also, when he asks for help in the Pacific, only the UK and Oz will help there, and they will say ... "We cannot do much as it's so far away and not really an issue for us." Starmer has come out after what happened yesterday and and has backed Zelensky. You might not like Starmer but he's doing what any decent British PM would do whether Tory or Labour, and that's doing what is best for this country. Unfortunately we are dependent on USA both economically and militarily. Macron is playing the same game too. Germany can afford to sit it out a bit as they are in between Chancellors but good to see that Merz looks like a realist here and has recognised that the transatlantic alliance is ending.
Big Euro Conference opens in next few days. All the European leaders, including Starmer will be backing Ukraine and attacking Putin. Putin is not as strong as it is often made out. Russia hasn’t been ‘red’ (or commie) for over 20-30 years.
Putin and Trump are different ends of the same stick. Both in it for themselves under the pretence of being for the good of their country. They are both exploiting and pillaging their own land and people as well as anything else they can grab. That’s why Trump likes Putin, except that I think Putin is more canny than Trump and will get the better of him one day (though hopefully not).
As well as my other observations earlier in the thread, there was a moment when Zelenskyy was saying Vance was talking loud, which he was, and Trump jumped in and said he wasn’t being loud and started to tell him off like a child. This is how he operates.
