FIFA World Cup thread. 12:02 - Nov 15 with 137536 viewsSnipper

I’m trying to get excited about this World Cup, but to no avail :-((.

I’ve just watched Sky Sports World Cup preview with Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher & Karen Carney. Utterly depressing viewing. Same old, same old. Picking players for the starting XI not playing for their clubs, or totally off form.

I’m hoping this thread can get the juices flowing.

Do any of you think England have a chance?

The game reminded me of QPR at our worst. Very pedestrian on the ball, long balls from the back line as no one in midfield willing to take the ball and break the line.
Same issue, neither England or the Rs can deal with a team that presses the midfield area.

That's how I saw it too.

Thought it needed an English player who could beat the press.

so slow in transition, we got the ball to the edge of their box with them all in place before releasing the ball to anyone with pace.
Typical defensive Southgate performance, imho.
Kane not at it, had quite a knock against Iran, scan in midweek, and still playing the 90 wasn't too bright either.

If that wasn't a fix/contrived result I'd like to know what is.

only positive you can take is that despite a very poor performance we didn't lose and are pretty much through baring a hiding in the last game

I thought Southgate got a bit stuck between going for a win in the last 20 and making sure we didn't lose and his subs refelcted that and didn't really change anything. Much to improve on

I think it's downright criminal that we've got a sub-par bottler like Southgate in charge of this squad. Just imagine what an elite manager could do with players like Foden, Bellingham, Saka et al. He blew an absolutely golden chance to win the Euros and he's in danger of blowing it again. Last night was the game he needed to put out the very best possible team and get the points, but he stuck to his usual safety first approach and blew it. The game v Wales is now going to be a war, because Wales know it's do or die for them and England need at least a point to be certain to progress. And yes, he should have rested Kane, he certainly doesn't need to be so reliant on him when you have the likes of Foden, Saka and Wilson available.

Glad the Iran v USA game also appears to be on live as it seems a much more appealing prospect than watching England desperately trying to avoid conceding four against Wales.

I've supported Southgate thus far but that tedium was a difficult watch. It wasn't really that conservative either because we could easily have lost and put a lot of unnecessary pressure on the final group game. Meh.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

That's right an early goal at home in the Euro's final and then went defensive allowing Italy right back in the game. Italy couldn't even qualify for this world Cup so blowing that final was down to Southgate and his tactics. It should never have got to a shoot out.

I hope he will play Foden against Wales and we attack and don't start playing safely first settling for a point and conserving energy for the knock outs.

One of the greatest managers in the world over the last 10 years starts Foden for his star studded international laden club team.

An out of his depth international manager who was sacked by Middlesbrough thinks Foden isn’t good enough for this England team.

On another topic, how much have Stoke been missing Souttar over the last year? That guy is a Richard Dunne-style monster when he plays like he did this morning.

Not for poor results though. He was sacked for breach of contract for doing what Beale is alleged to be doing and sniffing round other jobs specifically the Aberdeen job he eventually got.

When people tell me Krystian Bielik is a Rolls-Royce player and elite at Championship level, I'm continually convinced its all a big joke that everyone else is in on apart from me. This game isn't helping with that. He must be REALLY good in the games I don't watch

Mentioned this a time or two before, but the Championship is Proper Shite.

Dom Ball can play midfield in our league.

Well I can't deny that, put these guys with elite players and they stand out like a sore thumb. Apart from Ilias though, get him on the pitch v Belgium tomorrow

What are the rules on goalkeeper gloves? I just clocked the Mexico keeper’s and they are huge, they look like giant Fulham foam hands. They’d be blinding for picking up big piles of leaves in the garden but it seems to me to be an unfair advantage between the sticks.

Bottom of the Premiership?

16 years ago too. If we want to bash Southgate we should bash him for things that happened after Christine Aguilera was at No1.
