I'm completely in awe of this. No event in the history of my life has been marked to that extent. Nowhere near. I have sheer admiration for the people who are making the pilgrimage and I am completely humbled just looking at the queue on my television, yet alone joining it. A shame that more time could not be given to make it more easily accessible but obviously there are logistics and rituals to be observed. I hope every football supporter in the land gives the minute's silence and national anthem the full respect they deserve tomorrow.

Probably a conversation for another thread or not not at all to be honest, I was just trying to point out that everyone thinks they have the best parades / military / ceremony.

Probably a point to be made on another thread, or not at all, then.

We had the whole thing on all day running in the background mainly but checking in now and then. It ran like clockwork and the organisation of it really was impressive. If you are a royalist or nationalistic they represented the country proud I thought. After all the dust settles I wonder where it all goes from here. ? Definitely an end of an era.

The monarchy has a lot of legs left I think.
The Union not so much.

It's not a question that I "don't like" Charles - I've never met the man. I was just hoping to point out to some posters on here that Charles (and the rest of the royal family) are extravagent spenders of taxpayers' money. And that although they all claim to be environmental champions, they often opt to travel by helicopter and private jet when they could easily jump on a train or commercial flight.
Sorry if you think that should not be included in the debate.
Ok mate, apologies, just thought you were getting digs in!

Watched pretty well all of it, with a few comfort/ refreshment breaks (which many participants didn't appear to be able to have?).
Thought planning and running of the event was immaculate and a credit to all concerned. Some great TV angles and I found the images of the Massed pipes and drums marching to the Abbey, a particularly impressive and powerful sight & sound.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that has always been the case. Certainly when I was in my yoof the monarchy wasn’t the top of my list of things that floated my boat.
Certainly agree with Bazza that the Monarchy has a lot more legs in it than the Union. The next election only needs a hung Parliament and a Labour/SNP coalition for the next independence vote to be a reality. In the next few years the catholic side of NI will outnumber the Protestant side, the only question there though is whether the Irish government would agree to accepting NI within their boundaries and the additional cost of that together with a militant minority that would no doubt cause major problems.
My tribute consisted of just the short walk to Barons Court station at 1pm to watch everything go past. Coachloads of diplomats etc then shortly after, the Queen. Very good turnout all along Talgarth Rd. Coppers very good natured and handled everything well.

That’s what I initially thought re it being a youth thing but this part seems to suggest otherwise. It’d be interesting to see similar data from the 1980/1990’s.
‘Such disillusionment is a relatively new development. As recently as 2015, 69% of 18- to 24-year-olds said that Britain should remain a monarchy. By 2018 this had fallen to 47%, and in polls from 2020 onwards, prior to the Queen’s death, it has averaged at just 35%’

Since everyone seems to accept that the monarchy's role is ceremonial, why do we need a head of state at all?
Far from ceremonial when you've got all those assets around the world. They still wield massive influence in global politics as well as domestic matters.
I thought the whole thing was brilliant today. The march through London with the Navy, her family behind and a collection of men and women who have won st george medals along with nhs workers, whole thing just looked great.
I felt for the fellas carrying the coffin, I did that for my Nan and Granadad and it's a scary experience, i had to navigate 4 steps, god know how they managed so many when it got to Windsor.
The drive down the A4 seeing so many familiar sights and people coming to be a part of it then the walk in Windsor, it felt like the end of an era, we'll never see her like again getting the role so young in life and being able to bring so many people together.
I know the monarchy isn't for everyone, I'm pretty ambivalent on it usually and I found the playing of the anthem at QPR saturday a bit cringeworthy but seeing these historical moments over the last week has been incredible. Thought the broadcast of it was superb as well, hats off to BBC & ITV for their coverage

Bit like turkeys voting for Christmas for Labour without their Scottish seats should their be independence

Dave, I suspect my thinking is very similar to Antti's. It would be the start of a very long process that definitely wouldn't reach its end goal in my lifetime, probably not in my kids' lifetime...but is the only way I can see the UK becoming a more forward looking nation that lives in, celebrates and plays a positive role in the modern world.
As Antti argues so well, the monarchy, and the expectation of our subservience to it, is the tip of an iceberg that perpetuates a historical class system that this country really needs to shake off. Its existence helps justify the existence of the House of Lords. A second chamber for checks & balances? Great...but the Lords model, not so great, a mix of hereditary nonsense and political cronyism at its worst. Even the name House of Commons, with all that implies (let the commoners have a voice) needs to go. It also links directly to private schooling (check QE2's great grandchildren's new school when they moved recently), and the grip those who went to certain schools and universities have over our political life.
I'm not naive enough to think abolition of the monarchy, the Lords and private schools would solve all our ills overnight...or that we wouldn't, as you say, have rich privileged people running the country...but it would put us in a far better position to challenge that.
Enjoying this thread, been conducted in a very respectful manner by all (hopefully Clive can rest easy) - well aware my views on all things monarchy-related are minority ones, but been nice to have somewhere I can pop my head over the parapet.
For me it's a connection to history, each generation are linked by the royal family, we may have had different kings or queens but they have always been there, I find that quite comforting. Ultimately we have our say on how our country is run with every general election, the real power the Royal Family used to have was taken away a very long time ago.
Other countries like USA don't have a head of state but have the same class issues still, the people running the country are from the richest mosty privialged families.
It all sounds a bit like Brexit to me, people who wanted out of europe for years said everything would be great if we came out but it would take a few generations before we see the results, the reality of it will never be what you hope for.
The status quo is never as exciting as the unknown but I'm personally happy to stay as we are. I don't see the benefit in abolishing it. I'd like to see some changes to the Royal family and a few things scaled back but I'm be a remainer for this one.

How is playing the national anthem cringeworthy ?
Maybe thats not the right choice of words, it just felt that a bit forced on Saturday with the fake crowd singing also blasted through the speakers, no one seemed to be joining in where i was (appreciate thats probnably different elsewhere), it all felt a bit odd. I love the anthem played before England games, sing it loud and proud just felt a bit odd at the weekend

With two young kids who are as energetic as Zeberdee on acid, I got to see about two minutes of it. Hopefully there’ll be a highlights programme on iPlayer that I can watch.
RiP ma’am.

My big moments were the lone piper at Westminster up on the small balcony thing and he walked off and his wonderful sound got quieter and quieter....spine-tingling. And then on the Long Walk upto the castle when the bagpipes played Skye Boat Song. Gosh.
