The queue to visit the Queen's coffin 22:22 - Sep 16 with 32879 views | Logman | I'm completely in awe of this. No event in the history of my life has been marked to that extent. Nowhere near. I have sheer admiration for the people who are making the pilgrimage and I am completely humbled just looking at the queue on my television, yet alone joining it. A shame that more time could not be given to make it more easily accessible but obviously there are logistics and rituals to be observed. I hope every football supporter in the land gives the minute's silence and national anthem the full respect they deserve tomorrow.
The queue to visit the Queen's coffin on 08:23 - Sep 19 with 2194 views | gazza1 | Just thought I would post this..........it shows what sort of lady he really was. GOSH Patron, Her Majesty the Queen. Dear Gary, Like many people in the UK, and around the world, we are deeply saddened by the death of Great Ormond Street Hospital's Patron, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our hearts go out to her family and to anyone else who feels affected by this loss. Since becoming GOSH's Patron in 1965, Her Majesty has been a huge source of inspiration to our staff, patients, and families. We are incredibly grateful for the tremendous support she showed throughout her lifetime which helped ensure that the hospital’s vital work was fully recognised on a world stage. The Queen made three official visits to the hospital, the first being in 1952 as part of our centenary celebrations which you can watch here. She spent time speaking with the staff and young patients and was described as “bringing sunshine to cloudy lives”. We understand that everyone will be affected differently by these events. Some may be finding it difficult, particularly if you’ve experienced personal loss. You may be mourning in your own way and reflecting on how events during her reign touched and shaped your life. We are incredibly grateful for the donations wishing to commemorate the Queen’s close relationship with GOSH and in response have set up a fund in her memory. I wish you and your loved ones all the best during this time of change and thank you for your continued support of GOSH Charity. Together we can create a better future for seriously ill children — now and for generations to come. Liz Tait Director of Fundraising She was a 'proper' good person and thankfully most people realise that....i find it pretty sad that some want to try and 'derail' the death of her majesty.

The queue to visit the Queen's coffin on 17:41 - Sep 18 by Boston | As someone who is fourteen million, three hundred and sixty three thousand and forty fifth in line to the throne, I find this talk of republicanism deeply disturbing. [Post edited 18 Sep 2022 17:46]

Lucky you I cannot ever be in line to the throne being a Catholic as the King has to be Defender of the faith as well as Ruler of the United Kingdom. Not quite sure how a self-admitted adulterer and Divorcee is seen as being a great Defender of the Church of England but that's modern Britain for you

Fair enough If people feel the need to show their respect to the late Queen then so be It but It's not for me, similarly neither are the Royal Family. I've never been any good at being a 'subject of the Crown'.

Wasn't the C of E formed by King Henry the 8th.. ? Himself a well known adulterer and divorcee. I don't think you can blame King Charles for defending his faith there then.

"Not quite sure how a self-admitted adulterer and Divorcee is seen as being a great Defender of the Church of England." That was entirely the reason for setting up the whole shebang in the first place...

The queue to visit the Queen's coffin on 07:36 - Sep 19 by BrianMcCarthy | But they would also be able to vote them out. That's surely the crucial part. It seems pessimistic to me, almost defeatist, when a people don't believe their citizens could run a democracy to their own betterment, so let's leave it to an unelected family who believe in their own Divinity. |
You can't vote out the UN,WEF,WHO etc.who also apparently believe in their own divinity.

The queue to visit the Queen's coffin on 23:56 - Sep 18 by daveB | If it was scrapped tomorrow you'd still have rich privilaged people running the country, people may feel better about them as they vote them in but it's not going to be hugley different. |
Dave, I suspect my thinking is very similar to Antti's. It would be the start of a very long process that definitely wouldn't reach its end goal in my lifetime, probably not in my kids' lifetime...but is the only way I can see the UK becoming a more forward looking nation that lives in, celebrates and plays a positive role in the modern world. As Antti argues so well, the monarchy, and the expectation of our subservience to it, is the tip of an iceberg that perpetuates a historical class system that this country really needs to shake off. Its existence helps justify the existence of the House of Lords. A second chamber for checks & balances? Great...but the Lords model, not so great, a mix of hereditary nonsense and political cronyism at its worst. Even the name House of Commons, with all that implies (let the commoners have a voice) needs to go. It also links directly to private schooling (check QE2's great grandchildren's new school when they moved recently), and the grip those who went to certain schools and universities have over our political life. I'm not naive enough to think abolition of the monarchy, the Lords and private schools would solve all our ills overnight...or that we wouldn't, as you say, have rich privileged people running the country...but it would put us in a far better position to challenge that. Enjoying this thread, been conducted in a very respectful manner by all (hopefully Clive can rest easy) - well aware my views on all things monarchy-related are minority ones, but been nice to have somewhere I can pop my head over the parapet.

The queue to visit the Queen's coffin on 22:47 - Sep 18 by distortR | We get you don't like Charles, and you're not alone in that. But the real conversation here is about whether to keep the monarchy, or become a republic. I don't think it's that contrary of me to find the monarchy fairly ridiculous in many ways but still, unless i can be convinced otherwise and I am open to suggestion, to think it's the least worst option at the moment, albeit hopefully it will be slimmed down and become more financially accountable. I don't really feel that continued barbs at charles are moving the debate on at all. |
It's not a question that I "don't like" Charles - I've never met the man. I was just hoping to point out to some posters on here that Charles (and the rest of the royal family) are extravagent spenders of taxpayers' money. And that although they all claim to be environmental champions, they often opt to travel by helicopter and private jet when they could easily jump on a train or commercial flight. Sorry if you think that should not be included in the debate.

Yes you can. You can leave or choose not to participate in all of those organisations if you vote for a party that mandates it. [Post edited 19 Sep 2022 12:14]

The queue to visit the Queen's coffin on 14:18 - Sep 19 with 1237 views | NorthantsHoop | Constitutional Monarchy as formed and developed in the 1688 Glorious Revolution gives a sensible balance between the Head of State and Government. Queen Elizabeth II embodied all the best traits of what a constitutional monarch should be, she has been a loyal and respected servant of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. I find it mind boggling that you'd go and wait for hours to see the funeral procession and then film it on your phone rather than actually watch it. It's being broadcast around the world in much better quality than your phone can manage, so there will be no shortage of footage available, can't they just appreciate the moment?
