Coventry v qpr match thread on 17:58 - Jan 22 by dmm | Looking at the match stats, this one rather stood out. Gray had a total of just 10 touches in the game. One of those was a goal. Hmmmm. |
Yeah touch of the Clive Allens about him. Some fans used to grumble "yeah, but what does he do other than score goals?" and I'd be like [find that face palm emoji...]

Coventry v qpr match thread on 18:00 - Jan 22 by Stainrod | Think if you look at the bench you see why the manager wants re-enforcements. Other than Charlie (massive asset) it doesn't contain a match winner. Thomas is a trier and Amos is tidy but neither are going to turn a match. Again that depended on the brilliance of Willock to set up Albert (who was my MotM). Imagine if we cd get someone like Lawrence - the options that would give us. Think that would transform us from being the kind of team that has to hang on against Coventry to actually kicking on and saying "we could win this by a few". |
"Think if you look at the bench you see why the manager wants re-enforcements. Other than Charlie (massive asset) it doesn't contain a match winner." Agreed. Just said the same thing on a phone call.

I wonder if our current form and position in the league table might persuade the owners to mate a couple of signings. Feels like it’s opening up for us to have a real crack at promotion and who knows if the same opportunity will present itself next season.

Yes indeed, and I'm not entirely anti-Gray, but he's no Clive Allen.

I’m sure the owners would be prepared to make signings however there’s FFP to think about

Coventry v qpr match thread on 17:34 - Jan 22 by dmm | I really want to see Field acknowledged for a great performance. Too many don't see what he brings to this team. I'd go as far to say we'd not have won without him today. Clive, give him MotM. |
I'll second that emotion, though for me Willock was truly outstanding from start to finish. A very, very honourable mention for Thomas too, who's still winning me over, but I thought he was a thrusting revelation in his cameo (Ooo vicar!). But we were certainly rarely at sixes and sevens - for me, it was solid sevens and eights all over the park, and Marshall was rarely seriously troubled. With Chair to come back into the fold, Sanderson possibly arriving, and Lawrence as an outside bet, plus two very winnable upcoming home games (one of them in hand), things feel like they are really cooking. Amazing to think we could be second by Tuesday night if Blackburn stumble at home to Middlesbro and we beat the Swans. What a few weeks it's been - the loss to Stoke in early Dec. already feels like a distant memory!

although the days of a striker who just scores are long, long gone. You can't be a top player and only have that. Allen was a great striker, but when you look at how his career went, it doesn't take a genius to see that there wasn't enough in his game to be a really top player. After he left Spurs at just 27, he barely spent more than a year anywhere.

Agree with most of that, but Marshall must have made 6 or 7 saves today, including a fine double save and a flier to his top right. I've rated him 8/10 for today, so he must have been seriously troubled if we look at it that way ;)

Coventry v qpr match thread on 18:20 - Jan 22 with 2208 views | London_Pride | Despite Coventry being on top for long portions of the game , I thought that this was due to our formation rather than anyone playing badly. Field and Dozzell put in a huge shift but were overrun in midfield. All credit to Warbs for making the change to one up front and bringing Thomas on. We started winning the ball much further up the pitch and slowly took control of the match.

What claptrap! Allen was a top player, with a phenomenal scoring record at Spurs, QPR (twice) and 1 in 2 for Chelsea and West Ham even into his 30s. At his peak, if he were playing today, he'd be easily comparable to the likes of Harry Kane (Allen was a better player in my opinion) and would cost a sodding fortune.

Coventry v qpr match thread on 18:29 - Jan 22 with 2060 views | slmrstid | Just got back to Leicester...a nice happy 30 minutes in the car home! Got some friends coming over shortly so will catch up on other's match reactions later... My 5ps worth... Didn't play great, stuck at it though, kept plugging away, got a goal out of nothing. Smash and grab and Cov fans would feel aggrieved at losing that but I don't care. Hopefully the steward who went down is OK and gets to see his family tonight. Field was amazing. Marshall made some fantastic saves to keep us in it at times. Jimmy Dunne was celebrating like a madman at the end - love him. Great finish by Gray for #1, great header by Albert for #2. Dykes struggled and got bullied a bit by their defenders. We looked better with Amos on than Dozzell today. Thomas put himself about well too when coming on. Kane was crap. The atmosphere in the away end I would describe as "rowdy". But in a good way today, great fun, great singing. My first away game for 2 years, I've had plenty of trips in past years that have been miserable so enjoy the wins when they come and we definitely all did that today. Happy night ahead, You R'sssss................. Edit - good sides find a way, and that's us at the minute. Soft as sh*t Rangers we are definitely not at the moment. [Post edited 22 Jan 2022 18:31]

No of course, and wasn't trying to imply he was. But Gray is looking quite clinical - I saw his minutes per goal stat the other day (my befuddled mind now can't quote you it accurately) and it was by some distance the best at the club. Nothing is set in stone as its all about the squad but for me at the moment he is well ahead of Dykes - who I can't remember doing anything all match?

Should we start growing concerned for Mr Frank's sanity? He keeps losing - despite apparently "thrashing" other teams. And you could see the likes of Newcastle, Leeds and Everton all improving.

Not for me. A toss up between Field and Willock with Dickie deserving an honourable mention. Uncle had his moments but Field and Willock were consistently good throughout, all with Stefan missing. [Post edited 22 Jan 2022 18:58]
