such is the divisive nature of politics and refusal to accept blame for anything (and with some knowledge of what their base want to hear regarding brexit) current tories pointing at a few french staff being late for work as the basis for an ongoing set of travel challenges that I'm sure are multi faceted in their cause - covid, cost of living (low paid workers), and whisper it quietly brexit all likely to be contributory. But hey, lets offer a simple answer to a complex problem to shore up the base.

That's the usual way. People pick up on one headline or one piece of info and jump in. These things are never simple. It's not all to do with Brexit but it's definitely a huge contributing factor.

It was the port of Dover that reported only 6 French border staff turned up for work. About time we cancelled our agreement with the French and insisted that all passports checks are done on arrival at the destination not at the departure port. This is what is done with most international travel even throughout most of the EU when we were members. You showed your passport to immigration officials when you arrived at the destination airport.

The UK French agreement to allow for passports at channel ports and the Eurostar terminal in St Pancras to be checked was to ensure speedy onward travel once you arrived rather than clogging up the destination ports and terminals. If the French Authorities cannot provide sufficient resources then the agreement should be cancelled. It is clearly a French anti British tactic very similar to the European Cup Final in Paris when Liverpool fans were targeted.

Democracy! Yay!

You got what you wanted, this is your prize!

Stop blaming the French. This is happening for one reason and one reason only. You won, get over it. Own it.

This isn't happening because it has to (re the French) this is because they are being stroppy about t which is in nobody's best interests.

It's also because ports and airports had cut staff after covid and now don't have enough staff and are struggling to recruit, maybe they should pay a bit more?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Ahh, Covid. That didn’t take long.

Funny how we needed to ‘get Brexit done’ as we’re better of on our own, ‘bloody foreigners’, they need us more than we need them, and then when it completely and utterly obviously fails it the fault of of the bloody foreigners, or remoaners.

Go and shake yourself.

I think for balance, there appears to be no issue getting into Holland or Spain.

Where have I ever said "bloody foreigners"?

It's you that needs to shake yourself, covid has had deep and long lasting repercussions. Onthe news this morning they said that the numbers trying to travel are back to re covid levels but the staffing is still less than back then. That's the reality, that and the French deliberately slowing the process, as the previous post about travel to other countries shows.

There’s 4.5 million passengers, trains, ferries and trucks passing through a single point of entry at Dover.

I don’t think it’s comparable to Spain and Holland.

Maybe the comparable bit is the border cntrol arrangements, maybe Holland and Spain have more staff per visitor than France?

Well if the volumes of traffic and border processes are in line with predictions and the staffing levels are accurately modelled there should not be a problem. Spain and Holland are less busy but will have a volume and resourcing model to fit their needs.
It's easy to get drawn into the media political frenzy but it's a simple calculation if it takes a certain time to process a vehicle and you can predict how many vehicles there will be the amount of resource is also predictable.

Would have been easier if the Brexit referendum hadn't been an anonymous vote. Vote remain and keep your rights to freely live, work, travel, retire, receive cheap healthcare etc throughout Europe. Vote leave and lose those rights and need to wait in line to get your passport stamped. The queues would be around 50% shorter for the leavers at least.

A number of French border police were late arriving in Dover on the Friday - there a suggestion they came across on the Euro star and were late getting to Dover because of the congestion, but the issues are much bigger than a few border cops being late.

A lot of what we’ve seen is down to poor preparation for Brexit - pure and simple. We don’t have enough passport control points at Dover, in 2020 the government made several hundred million pounds available (via the Ports Improvement Fund) for infrastructure improvements so ports would be ready for the additional demands Brexit would create. Dover Port recognised the potential problems they faced and requested £33m for infrastructure improvements, extra booths for French border control etc etc. The UK government rejected the application and awarded them £33k !!!

A crash on the M20 and having to turn an arterial route in to a lorry park isn’t helping - it’s a shambles.

A primary driver in the UK French passport deal was an attempt to control illegal immigration in to the UK. Given the small size of our ports, checking the passports on arrival in the UK I’d likely to cause even more carnage as cars and freight would be backed up on to the ferries until they boils clear immigration in the destination port.

One of todays papers is carrying a story about French insistence on stamping passports being a factor, what do our politicians expect? We are only allowed to be in the EU for 90 days per 180 days, if they don’t stamp passports how are they supposed to keep track on people. I didn’t know this until today, but it seems the UK doesn’t wet stamp EU passports partly because of the delay it causes at our airports, so it looks like a case of the EU taking control of its borders while the UK isn’t!!

Our Government have implemented Brexit which is what we voted for, but what they haven’t done is the ground work to get the infrastructure and processes in place to make things work effectively afterwards.

A bunch of their staff were late in turning up for work, but most of this is down to not having prepared properly for Brexit and the associated additional demands required for passports checks. Project fear etc.

You’re right about staff cuts post Covid, they are factors. What’s infuriating is the French are enforcing the rules and stamping passports etc with entry dates etc (which I’d expect them to) but it seems the UK doesn’t stamp EU passports when people enter the UK as it takes too long and presumably we don’t have the staff. So it’s a case of we aren’t controlling our borders while the EU is.

The problem with Dover is space is limited and it becomes a pinch point. The National Audit Office identified these potential issues 2 years ago.
We’ve had a long time to get this right and haven’t, our politicians are woeful.

If that’s the case we need to look at our woeful preparation for an obvious eventually.

The narrative of “the French are being mean to us” won’t wash.

While their politicians still support the EU they were never going to make things easy for us. It’s in their interest to make Brexit a failure to show what could happen to any other countries thinking of leaving.

It’s going to get harder before (hopefully) it gets better.

Just think of the wasted years of government time spent on Brexit. Think of the money spent on it and the economic hit taken (and forecast for the future). Think of the lost rights and opportunities. It's just an unequivocal mess. An act of total self harm.
